What are your limits taking on ramps?

What prompted my post is that one guy said as long as you keep it below 3x posted and you are comfortable with the speed that should be fine. But even if you can do 4 or 5 x the posted confidently, that would be too dangerous according to him. Again, this guy hasn't gone down yet, may have a different view when he does.

Was Valentino Rossi public speaking about street riding again?

.....cold tires and debris on road.

That right there is your answer. I only push my limits at the track, where there is run off, no debris and can actually get my tires properly warmed up. Plus if I do go down there are nice marshals to make sure I'm still breathing and help pick the bike up.

One of the guys I use to ride with (street and track) went down years ago doing ramps. Spent a long cold night in a ditch with a broken back before someone noticed him.

Yes, I heard about this tragedy and actually referred to it on my initial post. From what I heard, he is quite experience and done track as well. No one knows how fast he was going, could be double or triple posted yellow or it could be at spee# limit or maybe just a little over, who knows. However, some had mentioned they had fallen quite unexpectedly with just a little over posted.

Thanks for everyone's feedback, despite being more comfortable going much faster than posted ramp speed, I think I will take a more prudent approach and go in at posted instead of going over. None of my riding buddies fell from ramping and their entry speed is much higher but that doesn't mean it will not happen eventually.

You sound like a responsible individual that has been misguided by the incorrect knowledge of others. Follow your gut. I find my gut tells me better information than a lot of people. The 3x the posted speed comment made me think of someone else that others shouldn't be listening too either.

I have the gift of psychic abilities and self repairing skin so I regularly go 4.365 x the posted speed limit on ramps as I know exactly what's around every corner and can see road conditions in advance. Wearing a speedo keeps me cool and aerodynamic.

When I'm not "ramping" I regularly go "tarding" and if I'm in a really good mood I'll go "****tarding" or "assclowning". I did once go "wassacking", otherwise known as "pillocking" and that was a blast.

holy crap!! ooch

What caused the low side? What speed were you going in at?

I witnessed a friend low-side at 30km/h in jeans when he accidentally shifted from 2nd to 1st (massive engine brake is the same as too much rear brake). That picture you quoted is exactly what happened to him. If you're going to ramp, get proper riding pants (Kevlar jeans, textile, leather, full suit, etc.)

And appropriate equipment too, sticky tires and slipper clutch just to name the two.

You are confusing me.
I thought we are supposed to ride at 100% attention and ability.
Your 70% leaves 30% of hazard.

70 percent of your capabilities... I can hit the Lawrence ramp apex at 110 and exit at 125 roughly but the times I've done that I'm pushing 100 percent of my capabilities I'm comfortable hitting the apex at 90 on a regular day so I'm not riding 100 percent of my capability on the street. You should be focused 100 percent of the time.

and I guess to clarify cars can go faster than 60 on a 30 ramp so 60 is not really pushing it unless you're new to leaning.

Also I think OP you're thinking too much into it just practice a little faster each time that's how I did it maybe it was my ego but if someone's faster than me I practiced until I could get close enough.

warp tiger normaly goes 3x the limit with no real issues, his bike scraps the side sometimes but I think 4-5x the speed could be ok depending on what you want to risk and deending on the ramp/conditions/bike/tires/religion

How are you looking at the speedometer while hitting the apex? Shouldn't you be looking through the turn? Just asking for curiosity

Ah ok get it, now it makes sense.

Anyways, let you guys all here with your ramp conversation, I am obviously not qualified for this discussion

If it's a ramp I've never been on, I'll just cruise through it at double the yellow recommended speed. Fastest I think I've done is getting off onto HWY35 heading north on the 115, took it at 130, recommended is 30 :D That being said I've done that one a few times before so I knew how it went, which is awesomely

Are you like me? Don't you just hate it when your not qualified enough?? LOL (Tongue firmly planted in cheek)

Unfortunately the post in the downed riders forum has been removed of the crash on the Bronte/QEW ramp in August. I imagine he too thought he was riding within his limits on that ramp, he was by all accounts a very skilled rider and rode that area quite a bit, (from the posts following his crash).

Ironic isn't it that we have many posting how skilled they are and how fast they can ramp, yet no one who made a SERIOUS miscalculation, (as in one you don't get up from), has yet to post how they wished they hadn't made the mistake they made.

To the OP ride only within your limits, yes to test them a little is good but to test them just for the sake of being able to post that "I did XXX ramp at 5X the recommended limit today" will as you have said, likely one day come back to bite you and that is NEVER a fun, or positive experience. It may not even be anything you do, but some cager exiting slowly in front of you, but it will hurt just the same. At least at the track you don't have cagers to contend with and there are safety precautions in place.

^I made the post about raccoons and survival reactions for a reason lol but everyone seems to want their e-peen stroked with regards to ramp speeds. There's a reason why I never posted mine because a public road is not a race track!

pppfffftttt... noob!

Clearly :)

And yes helmet cam I don't look at the tach

I've got nothing to prove on this forum by posting my speeds

Blowing by me in a straight takes no skill, catching me on a ramp I know I take fast, I'll give you props ;)

:lmao:

i just go the speed limit on ramps. Yeah I'm a cookie-puss, but having skin is awesome :)

How is that even possible? Those signs are so low you can make the ramp with a tractor trailer at their suggested speed lol

With a car you can do it 2x without breaking a sweat...on a bike 2-3 is just cruising
