We Know you Ride, But do you Shoot?

I think people in general would be surprised to find out now many recreational sports shooters there are living amongst them...
Where I live there are no fewer than six very active shooting clubs within an hours drive. Three are within 20 min. One... ten minutes.
The majority of these shooters would be handgunners... Simply because handgun sports can be done in urban areas more easily than other sports given that indoor ranges are viable venues.
You need more space in order to shoot rifles/shotguns

I spoke with someone a few years ago that was contemplating installing a 50 cal range (plus normal pistol and rifle ranges). I suggested to them that the plot of land they had was insufficient to obtain approval for that plan. IIRC, they wanted a 1000 or 1500 m range for the 50 and there were neighbours quite close to the firing position that may not be nearly as entertained by it. Afaik, the site never got developed.

It is indeed difficult to find real estate for outdoor ranges... Land is expensive.
Lots of places to shoot .50BMG though.
'Only issue is... Is it worthwhile?
Personally... Unless I could stretch it out beyond 800-1000 meters, why bother?

I mean.. at my range you can shoot .50BMG indoors, but it's only 50 yards. Outdoors... 100 yards
'Waste of ammo IMHO

My range has 25y handgun and 50 and 100yd rifle. Not much distance but then again it’s cheap and the only one available within a reasonable distance from me. I shoot .22 at 100yds more than anything as it’s more fun/challenge and the fancy Eley precision stuff isn’t outrageous to shoot. Handguns at 50 accurately and consistently is a challenge (for me anyway)…also mostly ego deflating too. Shotgun slugs at 100yds always fun.

I’d really like to try some of the long range precision stuff. My friends brother works for MDT as a long range precision guy. Does training courses too but I’d have to go to Petawawa for that.

Edit: range also has two fancy clay set ups too…so bonus there.

I’m really finding shooting clays right now is hard for me , can’t really wear mittens and my hands do not function well in the cold. May be time to start looking at a Florida range …

Dont any ranges for the "gentleman shooter" have IR blasters setup (like outdoor golf ranges)? You should be able to place them where they shouldnt get hit by competent shooters.

excellent question and you would think this would be standard equipment LOL . The idea of skeet evolved from trap , skeet is an American game , trap British and sporting clays is a hybrid. The original intention was practice for bird shooting and in a more realistic setting ( hence new walking courses for sporting clays that look like golf courses in the UK. Even the weather is supposed to be 'realistic' .
We have a big gazebo with a fireplace thats very nice , but it does not help me on course.

We've gone in the drizzle a few times and flurries and drying out guns and cleanup takes a while. I'd go for heaters .

Which club is this (or any others you recommend) for clays close to the GTA? Never had as much fun shooting as when I tried this for my first time.

Dufferin Northern Peel Anglers and Hunters Association has a decent setup in Orangeville. Waiting list to become a member (probably the same at all clubs). I'm not a member but I got to visit once.

I'm a member there. You need references from two club members to get in. In other words, you have to get to know the people at the club, and be someone we can trust.

Seems reasonable to me. I feel a lot more comfortable when firearms are handled by people I trust.

We are a conservation Club, organized in the 1930's. We are located at the north end of the Town of Orangeville, Ontario, Canada (see 'How to Find Us' for a Map). We are proud members of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Association. The DNPAHA consists of up to 350 members who pay annual dues and assist in the operation of the club. Member must contribute volunteer hours in the ongoing operation of the club.

The Club is located on 125 pristine acres of woodlots, ponds and trails. We have ranges for Archery, Handgun, Rifle and Trap. In addition we offer camping and fishing opportunities. Our facilities include Hall, pond and picnic area rentals. Our membership prides itself on being contributing members to the local and wider community. We are conservation minded and regularly get involved with or donate to conservation causes. One such program has us sponsor students, at the post secondary level, in areas of study related to conservation.

I need to buy a 10 gun safe as a Christmas gift for a new shooter. Looking for suggestions on units and mandatory features.

Want to meet legal requirements for safe storage. Fort Knox protection from theft is not required.

He has 4 long and a couple of hand guns.
Costco has a "24 gun" ( yeah right) for $650. I've seen much worse. 59x24x20", 355 lbs, keypad with backup key, power pass through. Sports Afield branded. 1969200 is product number.

Thanks. I just ordered one.

Tomorrow is the last clays day before Christmas. Then no shooting till after new yr.
You do get a bit addicted to a play date.

I just got a previously loved Miroku 12g trap gun, its a Browning clone made in Japan, considered very high quality. Browning was originally going to sue them for infringment , visited the facility and bought them out instead. Really nice engraving , laser done not hand work but nice none the less.
