Clays is a bit like golf , a good shooter can borrow your average gun and out shoot you , like you canadian tire driver being swung by a good golfer goes further than you ever hit . Clays are technical and repetitive actions , a better gun helps but time shooting helps more .
Guy in our group brings his duck gun as a warmup for duck season, hits clays just fine .
We have voice activated for trap , if your using that system which is easy , you do not speak while on the line of shooters , your “ hey Harry” can set off the activator beside you and buddy looses a target , you become “ that guy” . We have remote control for skeet , one guy pushes the button, for completions both systems can be used with a wired control and the Marshall will pull , there is never a miss pull which can happen with voice and remotes . 98% of the time we use remotes for skeet and voice for trap.
There is a lot of etiquette in clays , it’s all based on safety so just do it . Never load a shell until it’s your turn and your standing on the shooting station. If your shooting singles you load ONE shell , doesn’t matter your taking two shots from the same station , no shortcuts . Always carry your gun broken or action open. Never close a gun until your on station. There is no talking while someone else is shooting.
If you get into it , remember you’ll spend thousands more on ammo than the gun . And a 16 thousand Krieghoff won’t hit any more targets than a 3k browning, it’s like telling time with a watch , Tissot and Rolex both tell time , one looks more stylish doing it . That said , a $1500 Canuck will get shot out , when the 5k browning is just getting broken in . Duck hunting youll shoot 25 shells pre season, trap you’ll shoot 75 on Saturday . Guns wear out .
I’ve had a lot of various sport in my life , I think skeet shooting may be one of the most supportive groups and welcoming I’ve seen. Lots of coaching and tips while your shooting if you open to it , everyone wants to grow the sport and it’s a helpful bunch . I have yet to meet the ego that is annoying in other sport .
Even the guys with 30k guns are quite happy to shoot with guys that brought a duck gun, as long as your following safety etiquette.
