As the title states, i want to get into shooting (guns). I went to my first gun range today and shot a Beretta and a Glock, and some rifle. I enjoyed it!

Now i want to get started with getting my RPAL and purchase my first handgun (probably a Glock or a Ruger).

Does anyone else shoot on here? What club do you go to? Whats the membership fee?

Thanks!

our OSAP gives out too much money.

Go sign up for a pal course near you. There are a few places that offer them and a lot of them are booked a ways in advance. I'm a member of orillia gun club. It's about 230 a year and a good mostly outdoor club right beside Elwood epps if you like shopping!! Drawback being that it's a bit of a haul to go there so I just take a few friends and make an afternoon of it.

One thing about shooting is its not cheap, unless you stick to small caliber but where's the fun without the bang?

Get a .30-30, 'nuff said.

If you plan on being a new shooter/gun owner. The biggest actual cost is ammo. Getting into the bigger rounds can be more than a buck a shot. I've been shooting since I was 11. After all these years I still have the most fun with a .22 (rifle and pistol) and a brick of ammo is super cheap. If you only plan on plinking.

Remember bigger rounds = bigger ft. lbs of recoil + cost.... Here's Nitro Rounds....

PM me if you want ranges/more info

Most ranges offer a pal course, I assume you went to Target sports if you were trying guns, they have a course.
I personally find rifles more fun to shoot then handguns, so you may want to go down that route first then upgrade to a handgun later. Handguns bring extra hassles like not being able to go to the country and shoot which you can do with rifles. Plus needing a range membership, an ATT, a safe. Plus 22 rifles are dirt cheep to use and are a great trainer for a beginner.

Yep, went to Target Sports. I did try a .22 rifle, but rifles are like triple the cost of a handgun (The ones im looking at). And yes rifles were much funner than a pistol.

Edit: Nevermind about the rifle cost, was looking at the wrong ones.

So your saying you dont need a ATT for a rifle? Also, whats a good average cost for 50 rounds? Target sports Canada are selling them for about $17.5.

I shoot at silverdale (http://www.silverdalegunclub.com/) its about an hour from toronto. No range compares to this place, outdoor, open 7 days a week all light hours. Plenty of space and the staff is laid back not like at other places cough cough target cough cough. :D

Also if you wanna chat with other gun enthusiasts come on down to canadiangunnutz.com, you won't have to deal with silly antis there.

The process is as follows:

- Take the 2 day course (PAL/RPAL)
- Send out your paperwork
- Get it back, send it out again
- Call in or have rcmp call you and your references for an interview
- Get license
- Buy gun
- Join club
- Do another course/probationary shoot
- Get att and finally be allowed to take your gun to the range

Hope you have patience!

Also don't rush into a firearm purchase. Shoot different types and see what you like. I personally didn't jump on the glock bandwagon because the hand position just felt funny. The moment i picked up a smith and wesson m&p 9 it felt like a glove. Needless to say i now own two calibers of this model, .22 and 9mm.

Also start out with a .22, its just as much fun as a 9mm or bigger but 1/10 the cost to shoot. And once you start shooting you'll go through bullets like no tomorrow.

Finally if you wanna meet me at silverdale one day to shoot, shoot me a pm and we'll set something up. Its $20 for a non member day pass.

It really depends what ammo. 9mm about $20 for 50 rounds. While .22 cci are 7 bucks for 100 rounds.
The bigger the ammo the more cash.

You don't need an ATT for NON RESTRICTED rifle...such as a ruger sr 22

I thought all Handguns were restricted? Isn't a Ruger SR22 a handgun?

That's a pretty sexy looking rifle! How much would a good scope cost for one of these?

depends on your definition of "good" , you can start at under 100$ or take it up over 1000$.

If you're looking at .22 handguns don't overlook one of these bad boys. Just recently was allowed in canada

Thats only until you get into the real meat of shooting a handgun properly and quickly.

IMO nothing beats action handgun, and shooting clays with shotgun. Rifle is generally pretty sedate (unless we're talking 3-gun) and easier than pistol. Also 99% of your rifle shooting will be punching holes in paper and that gets stale in a hurry.

the time line for PAL is about 2 to 3 months, RPAL is even longer as you have to wait for gun transfer etc etc.

I have PAL only and go to Silverdale. Cheapest way to start shooting a rifle is a 22 cal bolt action and a brick (500 rounds) of ammo for $25. After that you will want to step up to centerfire and the cheapest way is to get a military surplus SKS and a crate (1320 rounds) of surplus ammo. You're looking at $400 give or take for that combo...at that point, youve gotten addicted and will start bying more and more...trust me, i'm there now... 6 rifles and climbing. By far the most fun i have is precision shooting with my bolt action 223 at longer range. 200 yards is as far as i've gone but i'm looking for crown land to extend that.... PM me if anybody up north knows of good Crown land shooting spots!

This seems like fun. I think the difference with a rifle is that you're able to reach out and reach a target
