Vespa on the 401, totally do-able but...

I have a dream of doing an Iron Butt Saddle Sore on a GTS250.

Do it. Good practice for the Scooter Cannonball where you can ride a scooter across the entire USA.

5,100 km on scooters in 7 days. You're averaging 700 km/day for a week lol

I talked to a couple from Montreal back in the 70s who where on their way to Vancouver on a Honda 55 Cub.
The pair of them had to weigh 500lb.
When I asked the women what they did on the long hills in Northern Ontario she had a simple answer.
She walked to the top and waited for her husband to catch up.
Its all in the attitude not the power.

Ah man, now you have me dreaming. I wish it didn't start on the other side of the continent though - I'd be basically doubling the ride just to start.

I waited a little long for my first SS so right now I am just planning. Shopping for heated gear now as I expect I will be starting at around 3-4 AM. Goal is to do an SS before the summer.

Ironically, the Vespa (it's my sister's) may be a better platform than my naked bike. Similar range, but effective windshield, comfy seat, and she has the skirt to go around the seat to keep legs a little warmer.

EDIT: Darn it. Looks like the next ride is only in 2025. I think I could do 700 km/d easily for the week. 1600km for the SS in one sitting, that's a whole different kettle of fish.

EDIT 2: Looks like the typical budget for an entry is $3500-5000 !

Here is a warm-up for the 2025 Scooter Cannonball
and you get to ride the 401 on the Vespa!

Interesting ! I followed your link to their Facebook page. Even though their webpage says "you get to hang out with a bunch of people that really like small motorcycles! ", the FB page shows mostly bigger motorcycles, including some GoldWings ! I guess most of them are competing in the "Tourist class".

Do you do this ride @guzzirider ?

I love small bikes and have ridden in several Motogiro.
This event has intrigued me but living in Alberta it was a bit far to come.
Kingston is now my home.
I had forgoten about it until this thread popped up.
I have a 1987 Honda CBX250 that would be ideal for the run.
It would be great to get a small group together with a support vehicle.

One summer afternoon I walked out of Crappy Tire in Lindsay and parked beside my bike is a Burgman scooter, with a Florida license plate. I got all excited and waited15-20 minute cuz I WANT to talk to the nut job that rode that thing up from Florida.
It was my neighbour from down the street, he winters in Florida and it costs him about $100/yr for plates and insurance. The scooter lives in a trailer most of the time.

I've looped Lake Ontario in a single day twice on 250s. My first loop was on a Virago the last was on a Ninja. The first trip took 16 hours, last one was had a faster pace and fewer stops -- it took <12 hrs.

Would be fun to try again. Might be a good challenge for my old Triumph 250.

Depends on which Burgman but would be an easy ride on the 650 and even the 400 it would not be a stretch. My best days on my 650 was back to back 950km. Very comfortable with the RDL seat and backrest. Terrific weather protection so Florida the only challenge would be boredom if sticking to the Interstates.

They switch starting sides every time, but either way, does it really matter?

If they start on the side nearest you, you still either gotta ride it home, or ship it home.
If they start on the side furthest from you, you still gotta either ride it there, or ship it there.

At the end of the day, same same. Just get weird on scooters, it's fun :)

I'd do it ! It's really not very long compared to some of the crazy IBA runs.

You're right. I'd probably prefer to go East->West and then ride back, knowing I can take my time coming back.

Do they always go between Carmel and Hilton Head?

I don't know much about the Canonball to be honest, but I'm assuming the route and start/end points change every time.

West to east a lot easier with small bikes. Think prevailing winds and storm tracks. Even with larger bikes we flew the bikes west then rode back home with the wind....you can position yourself in the lovely air behind a storm system.
My last ride around Superior worked out wonderfully trailing the T-storms all the way home.

The big bikes where the only ones going slow enough to get pictures taken.
Check out the times for the 50cc bikes keeping in mind 2 border crossings and a lot of pit stops.
see pic
650 miles in 12.41 hours equals 52.4 mph (84kph) on a 50cc Aprilia!
A lot of Gold Wing riders could not keep up that pace.

Seriously thinking of doing this if I can find someone to do a support vehicle.
Probably trailer the motorcycle to Wellington Ohio and back.
