Valve Adjustment Problem

I'll turn them straight up and see if that makes difference. Thanks a lot fastar1. I'll let you know what happens.

The cams have quieting ramps so they should be facing straight up or you may not be measuring the maximum clearance. If you did not measure all the valves this way I would recheck them all.

Your head may be toast try finding a undersized shim so you have a starting point.

I'll try it without a shim and see if I can get any clearance. Could the head really be toast even if the compression test checks out and the bike runs fine?

Could be out of service limits a undersize shim might buy some time.

make sure you rotate the engine a few times after changing any shims, if a shim is not setted correctly it will give you this problem.

I seat the shims into the opening in the spring. Then I put the tappet on top. I'm going to remove the shim completely and put the tappet back on in the morning and see if I get a measurement or not.

Just I'm clear on what's going on here, you're talking about the bucket, not a tappet, right?

As far as I know, it either shim under bucket, or a tappet system.

You may want to source out shims from another bike that fit yours that could give you a larger size range (ie; HD V-Rod shims fit the KTM LC8 engine and are available in smaller increments allowing for more accurate adjustments).

Well I'm already at a 120 shim which is the smallest shim I can put on this bike. Since there is no clearance between the bucket and cam lobe. What do I have to replace to fix that? What would be causing the no clearance issue?

I checked the cam lobe width and they are above service levels. So the cam lobes are ok.

Could be a valve seat issue. I think you're on the right track to take the shim out and check to see if there's clearance without it. If there is then, as mentioned, see if there's another bike's shims that will fit yours and if so you may find that they have smaller shims than are available for your bike.

There was no clearance with no shim. I did that earlier today. I buttoned everything back up with the 120 shim and it runs fine. I took it for a ride and it rides fine. I may take the head off sometime soon and just inspect the valves. I don't know what else to do but take the head off now.

What's a build valve seat issue?

Sorry, missed that you'd already checked it without a shim at all. Disregard about the valve seat, I was looking at it backwards. This is what a valve seat is at any rate;

I can't offer any other suggestions.
