Used bike buying help?

I am buying a new bike next week, checked it out today and the engine sounds fine, started okay, lights works, tires were in good shape, brakes were good.

I haven't touched motorcycles a lot not sure what to look for or where to take it. I am getting it safetied/certified before I buy it just to check that its in good working condition.

Is there anything I should check about the bike? I did check ownership, VIN #, and he doesn't have the UVIP but he said I could get it with the VIN #.

Should I bring it to a garage for a full check up/ diagnostic? How much would it cost?

Where is the bike located/where do you live? If you get the bike to Daniel at Heritage Auto he can give it a good look over for ya and certify it at the same time. http://goo.gl/maps/7moe1

You can take the VIN# to Service Ontario and get a UVIP print out. Check the 2nd page for any liens.

Its a really old bike (1990's) doubt any liens will be on it, but I will check, thanks for the tip.

Its at eglinton and dufferin, the seller wants to choose the garage to have it safetied at, is this a mistake?

2 streets apart, what are the chances? I'll shoot him an email and see if he can help me out! Thanks!

Any other tips are greatly appreciated!

By law the seller must provide the Uvip

hes already tossing me a deal and gave me the VIN, i don't wanna be a pushover and bug him for it, but yeah I read that the seller is legally responsible to present it to buyers.

This bike sounds sketchy. I know this is your first bike, and you started multiple threads to find your answers, but your jumping through too many hoops that the seller has to sound sketchy. Do your riding school, look for bikes throughout the year, and call insurance for quotes!

Back out of this deal before anything further happens. Take a step back, the seller wants you to go to a specific mechanic. I don't care what BS the seller makes up, there's something wrong with the bike.

I would avoid having him safety it his shop. He may know the shop owner and get him to overlook a bunch of stuff, and there are some mechanics that'll just write a safety when selling a bike, without them even looking at it.

Daniel might be able to go pick it up for you as well with it being so close to him, for sure give him a call.

I don't think I've ever had a seller provide a UVIP for any car or bike I've ever bought :)

Its a 1996, kawasaki zx9r, and its going for $3000, its not an amazing deal but its decent. He never said he MUST go to his own mechanic but just said that he would to get the safety.

I only made one thread for advice on buying the bike, the other thread was just to ask about registering the bike without insurance.

Yeah thats what I was thinking, if you know a mechanic as a friend you could ask him to look the other way on a couple things.

Hey if this daniel guy can get the bike from point A to point B I would be very interested. I don't have insurance so I can't ride it back to my house either. Pretty bad timing asking on a saturday since most garages are closed sunday.

Get the UVIP before money excanges hands...I've always told the seller when negotiating price ill get the package eventhough you are legally suppose to and ill have it when money and ownership is excanged and I get them to safety while their plates are on it (either I borrow their plates and take it in on my day off work or they take care of it) I go over everything really well so I'm only worried about the paperwork and $...but that's just me.
I like doing it this way because it gives me a chance to doublecheck the history against the other history reports.
Some guy tried selling me a harley last year that he has been hiding since 2009, a buddy of mine works with omvic and udsa so he digs deep on the history reports for me. Turns out the seller made 3 payments on it and that's it...so they have been looking for the bike for a while, I was standing infront of the "seller" when I got the call telling me to hold my money.. He gave me the guys full name and actual address (not the farmhouse where he had the bike hid from creditors), kinda scared the guy a little I had access to that info lol. I gave him hell for wasting my time because I told him ide find out everything about the bike and not to bother trying to lie....

Don't brush off the fact that their could be a lien, the bike is being sold for 3000, so he may have paid 5000 2 years ago and gotten a loan on it and not paid it...or maybe a previous owner has a lein on it, you never know. When buying a car/bike just assume they are lying to you, it prevents disapointment.

TRFB - The fact that you haven't got a UVIP from your sellers means nothing, legally he has to, don't give this new buyer the sense that it isn't necessary.

OP - you are obviously eager to buy your first bike, it happens to all of us man. Best advice i can give you is... stop. The sell is shady, that is the reason the guy won't provide a UVIP and wants you to go to his mechanic.

3000 for that Bike is over priced so there is no deal. This is your money man, don't waste it on a money pit just because you are dying to buy a bike and ride.

I've bought the uvip for bikes I've purchased. Seller should get one if they are eager to sell. It does t expire as far as I know.

I think that bike is overpriced. Have you priced out insurance? A new rider and zx9 is going to cost a bit.

All of this. You would be able to find a newer 750 or 600 for that price range (perhaps a tiny bit more for a really low km example) and depending on your age insurance may bend you over for anything over a 600 anyways. I'd look into it for sure but to me this seller does sound shady. A first bike purchase isn't something you want to impulse buy. Do your research and look around at what is out there for what you want to spend. There's a lot.

Yeah I slept on it and I am rushing to much to get my first bike, luckily some sense hit me before it was too late. He told me I could get my hands on a UVIP at a service ontario, I am gonna take it slow and get the UVIP, aswell as asking a garage I trust to take care of it.

If that doesn't happen so be it, I will just pass the offer and keep looking.

Any chance you can find a bike like that and help me out? PM me please.

I have been looking for several months and I could only find 600-1000cc bikes that were aged into the 1990's for my price range.

I sort of want to spend a small sum for my first bike, scared of dropping it or making stupid beginner mistakes to damage a brand new one.

Have you called your insurance company to get a quote? My first bike was a CBR 929 and I was paying $7,000/yr for insurance!

Why do you want to start on such a big bike? Probably something like a Ninja 250 would be more reasonable on insurance, easier to learn on and you can sell it easy next year if you're ready to upgrade.

This^^. You could find a nice Ninja 250 for around $3000 that doesn't need any work, and sell it next year for almost the same amount. Not to mention the money you would probably save on insurance.

A $3000 1996 bike can become a money pit really quickly... IMO

If you are proceeding with your purchase, and not plating it make sure you don't pay for safety. Only lasts for x amt of days. Just get a mechanic to inspect and give opinion to you

My mouth actually just fell to the ground. That's insane! Big bikes are never worth it to start on. That and if I recall zx9's aren't the lightest thing out there...
