Track tires

As long as we are (now) talking about pressures, what would be a good first guess for Q2s on the track? And / or, what surface temperature should I be targeting coming off a session?

Q2s are decent for the track... I used the standard F30 R28 and it worked well on those tires. No cold/hot tearing issues in any sort of weather. Some people will play with 1psi lower in each in a serious weather change, but that's a good number to aim for to start with.

Had good luck with 26 rear, 28 front when cold with Q2s. But my friends who tried to save money using them found that they were eating up the Q2s just as fast as race tires, and without the grip that the DOT race tires gave them.

Lastly I ran 27 rear (Q2) and 30 front (S20), these are cold pressures. Seemed to work well for me with minimal sliding exiting corners, but I was hitting it hard exiting too...kinda fun though! Not much cold tearing...and I didn't use warmers either. If you're around Hamilton, you can have my set (2 trackdays on it only), it will cost you a couple of beers only ;)

I used 30/30 cold with a bunch of different tires in the past, street and DOT race, no warmers. It was fine, but certainly could have been better. If you're changing 1 or 2 PSI to try to affect a change in handling of your bike then you're likely in the realm of using race tires with warmers and properly set up aftermarket suspension, so this is all moot...

Any opinions on the Pirelli Diablo Rosso II?

I've quite enjoyed mine, though I'm not saying that means anything. Over here is a nice (but long) article about them and their design history.

The Diablo Rosso Corsa is probably a better choice, but it depends on your pace and your balance of street/track.

Michelin is also very good choice. They've introduced 3 new tires for 2013 all of which could apply to the OP. The new DOT race tire is the Power Cup, the new Power One is the Power Supersport and the new Power Pure is the Power 3. The Canadian Michelin race guy is Wayne at Kennedy Motorsports.

:thumbleft: Ran this tire last year for track/street riding and have no complaints.

DRC's are decent on the track, very similar to Q2's, but slightly more expensive. DRC's work better in cooler temps, Q2's better in warmer temps IMO. I would not use Rosso 2's on the track unless it was damp/raining, they have a higher silica compound I believe, which is good for wet grip, but not as much dry grip.

I also ran some black rubbery tyres. They were mainly round and I put some air in both the front and back ones. No complaints so far. They help me go round and round and round.

I sell dunlops, they are very rubbery, I say they are the rubberiest tire out there. They are also black , and they come in super rubbery, rubbery, and kinda rubbery.

Nobody wants to see bareback racing.

You know what's funny... this summer I forgot to check the tires after Sandy changed them out for me at Calabogie and went out on the track with something like 36/40 in the tires cold. The bike has never turned so well, but it dragged the rear into corners bad (yes I use rear brake), didn't slow me down at all but it sure made the bike feel loose on the brakes. Then I had the rear step out through corner one in fifth gear with the throttle and clued in that I should throw away a few laps and come in before something untoward happened... actually I thought of Wingboy's crash.

If Caboose's comment was a "come and watch me race" post, then this would have to be a "come and watch me lap" post.

Wow, that's a stretch.
