Seeing as Canada adopted the US rules and we have our own government to enforce laws here, ya we did call that one our own and that law now does apply here. We also have these things called international agreements that compel us to collectively clean up our act over the next few decades, some have possibly heard a little about that in the news.

Still. Back to the original point. Enforcement - How?

You can't ban all aftermarket parts. Among other things, it's not fair to owners of older vehicles for which like-new-condition original parts aren't available. It also won't work. An original-equipment but rusted-out stock muffler is still noisy.

You can't just require that EPA marking (or e-marking) on all parts. Doesn't solve the problem - if someone wants to be noisy, they can cut open an original muffler and rip the guts out and carefully weld it back together preserving that marking. If the only requirement is the marking, it's there. If there's a prohibition against tampering, prove it at the roadside without unreasonable detention. Good luck.

The "noise snare" and similar devices won't work properly, because sound is not very directional and is strongly influenced by distance and the surroundings, including other sources. (IIRC GreyGhost is a sound engineer)

SAE J2825 was intended to be a reasonable and quantifiable standard for assessing motorcycle sound (there's a similar standard with a different number for other vehicles). A number of municipalities including Caledon have bylaws based on that standard. That standard makes reasonable allowance for vehicles that aren't in brand-new condition and have reasonable aftermarket parts - doesn't have to be strictly OEM, as long as it meets the requirements. Seems fair ... OEM equipment in good condition always passes, aftermarket parts that are "decent" pass, straight pipes and stylishly short but obnoxiously loud mufflers don't pass, which is as it should be. And still, they've had problems enforcing it. Charges don't stand up in court.

If they were serious about this (and the related emission-control matters) ... the Ontario government would have kept Drive Clean, included a proper sound level measurement as part of Drive Clean (easier to do the testing in controlled circumstances as opposed to outdoors), and included motorcycles in Drive Clean. But instead, they scrapped the whole program.

YES, with that approach, some people could install their "compliance" set-up, do the Drive Clean test, then switch back to their noisy/higher-emissions set-up. But most people wouldn't bother, it's too expensive and too much aggravation ... and police officers have the option of ordering a Drive Clean inspection at any time if they suspect that something is amiss at a roadside stop.

Since that is obviously not happening, with the program scrapped entirely ... my conclusion is that the government isn't serious about this.

And at least in this area, the obnoxious riders have been substituting obnoxiously loud stereo systems in place of obnoxiously loud exhaust systems.

How about peer pressure and public training. Do you still light up a cigarette in a restaurant? Did you stop doing that because you seen so many smokers being fined 50,000$ or because it is wrong? Do you still dump your used motor oil down a storm drain? Did you stop doing that because the fines and enforcement prevent you from doing it, or because it is the wrong thing to do?
 
Maybe I can shame CN into not blowing the dam train whistle as they past my house. We all know the train is there, it’s path does not deviate from day to day.
Yet they blast the whistle for good 1/4 mile each way from a crossing that has lights and the barricades. It’s so loud you have to pause conversation until it passes.
I’m all for safety but it’s a bit overkill. Easy fix stay off the tracks don’t get hit by train.
 
Except Clutt you're assuming people have common sense enough not to walk on tracks.....

Maybe you can get CN to remove the whistle sign that tells the train engineers where and when to sound the horn.

Whistle is required by law unless specific requirements are met, studies are conducted and a by-law is passed making a specific crossing no-whistle. It the operator didn't use the whistle, they would probably be fired. Rail companies are big on rules.

I wonder if the train operator wears ear plugs. You know for the wind noise ;)

Go trains actually have two horns. They are supposed to use the "quiet" horn for crossings and use the loud horn only for emergencies. Most operators follow this although there are a few that seem to use the emergency horn far more often. If you think the "quiet" horn is loud, the emergency horn is much much worse and makes most people jump.

Northfield and Weber is a backed up mess constantly. Train will pass thru and intersection will stay all red for minutes. I heard there have been quite a few complainants about it but I'm not holding my breath for any changes
 
Well I installed the db killer in my pipe this morning.
Maybe it was the peer pressure :unsure:
But didn’t last long. It’s out again.
I have decided that it’s acceptable just the way I like it. If I get a ticket I will reevaluate at that time.
I actually pulled it out while the bike was running and the volume at idle didn’t seem all that different. Just deeper

I followed a car up Homer Watson that came to the 'roundabout' and went left into opposing traffic, wrong way round. I'm not sure the trains or the morons that did the layout are the whole problem up there. #buicksucks #oldguyswearinghats
