To be masked or not to be masked

Wife flew to Utah yesterday (early evening) out of Terminal 3. Breezed through security and flight was just slightly delayed taking off. She took only carry-on so no luggage issues.

My kids went through terminal one, Air Canada. Both had identical luggage with identical contents. One was forced to check his, one wasn't.

We drove to Florida in April and only spent $330US on gas (round trip) and about $300US for hotels along the way. The bonus was we had our car to get around while there, so no rental required. I've completely had it with security at airports, as well as flight delays, cancellations and lost/delayed luggage. Driving across the border didn't require testing, just the completed ArriveCan app. Breezed through with just a couple of questions, none of which pertained to Covid. I may never fly again.
Super! What ever made us stop seeing the journey as part of the adventure.

Rental cars can be a nightmare as well. Take what you can get and pay what they demand. Times 2 at an airport.

A friend's mother works for one of the big rental companies and once in a while he'd give me a list of the used stuff they were updating. IIRC they were 1-2 years old and under 100K on the odometer. you got a lightly (Hopefully) driven luxury version of the plain Jane for less than a new plain Jane.

With the chip / supply issues they've been driving the cars longer and will have to unload vehicles 3-5 years old with well into the six figures on the clock. I suspect there'll be some interesting peaks and valleys on the future accounting charts.

Didn't they dump a whole whack of rentals early during the pandemic, since nobody was renting, and they had no place to park them all?

Not sure but the end result was a bad guess with inventory. A lot of people, including me, expected a retail crash with toys but nope it went the other way.

Long wait toys may catch people as well. Sign for an $XXXXX pool installation and wait two years. In two years will you still want it considering all the potential ifs.

For the pool game, pool supplies canada in Burlington has 20x40' liner pools in stock. You dig the hole, install the kit and you can be swimming for ~30K plus whatever you want to spend to make the surrounding land pretty.

I've done Birmingham, AL is a single day, with the only issue being that my credit card got declined at the pump a couple of times. Guess VISA didn't believe that someone would get so far, so fast.

I no longer use credit or debit to purchase gas, cash only for me after dealing with credit card fraud that was easily traced back to a gas station. It's a bit of a pain with pre-pay required, but in my mind it's safer. Fortunately my fill-ups on the car are less than $50, even with the higher price of gas.

I always pay at the pump and tug on the shroud over the card reader, to make sure there's no skimmer in place. Some years ago, when I was getting fast food and chatting with the franchisee of the place, she told me that a couple of (she said) Russian dudes had come in and offered her a dual line debit card reader and to "split the profits."

As @Rob MacLennan I also check the terminal to make sure there's nothing mounted on the actual one. Typically a short bump/punch and try to pull it off before I put my card in.

This goes for ATMs, gas stations, and some stores. But typically it's just a tap (<$100) so don't check it.

I have been checking my statements more carefully following a $500 rip off by someone that got access to my card a few months ago.

I only get up to Victoria Harbour once every ten or so years and it isn't to buy concert tickets. A quick call to Visa when I got the bill and the charges were reversed. I don't know what happened at the other end. I check my statements but did the gas station?

A friend was offered plastic counterfeit Canadian plastic currency at his shop at 50% off the face. He declined but a scumball a few units away didn't.

These things are as discriminate as land mines. The person that ends up losing at the checkout could be well off or it could be a single mom buying the weeks groceries. If you want to steal, target someone that can afford the loss.

It hard to find someone lower than a bike thief but counterfeiters are worse.

No idea if the other cards do this but a few months ago I started looking for a credit card that had no foreign exchange fees. Then I got a smart watch that had contactless payment but only worked with certain cards. Brim financial was one of them and it also had no exchange fees and a no yearly fee option. Got the card and set up the app. Went to use the card for the first time and within seconds I got an app notification of the amount and where the purchase was made, then an email with the same. The app lets me switch off online purchases, foreign purchases or all purchases with a radio button. I can set up monthly payments through it if I need. I can set up a budget too and get reminders of approaching limits etc. The thing is fantastic and I don’t know why all cards don’t do this now. No need to wait for statements to check for fraud or log in to bank accounts.

Good to know. I use to use the amazon card for cheap foreign use but they killed it. I can setup notifications on my phone for my cards. I don't think I can easily control where they are used.

After my card got used for $500 of unauthorized purchases I set it up that I get an SMS each time it’s used.

Then I use a separate card for only online purchase.

And my Interac also send me notification of any amount that goes in or out of my account basically instantaneously.

How do I set up these text messages for TD debit and credit cards?...I'll have to check their website...

My wife has a TD bank account so it is definitely possible. Probably online somewhere, I don't think she has been to a branch in years.
