This is why I have a dash cam

got a link to that forum? so let me get this straight, the guy rolled his car backwards causing a collision, now the driver posts it on the forum with pics showing the damage that HE caused?

and why would the video not be admissible in court? it's pretty clean cut evidence. same with surveillance cameras and etc.

No no no, sorry, the one with the camera (victim) posted the topic and the pics: http://www.toronto-subaru-club.com/forums/general/158949-why-you-need-dash-cam.html

I'm still trying to find some official documents regarding video evidence. I'm just going by what I've read on countless other forum topics regarding consumer dash cam devices. Apparently they'll only help you when dealing with the insurance companies, but are unlikely to be admissible in court.

Lots of woulda / couldas but if you could have gotten his insurance info and then sent a copy of the "Accident" to them.......

Where is our minster of justice on this? Insurance fraud, police indifference plus the serious risk of colateral damage with cars stopped on the highway. Is this OPP or TPS?

I can't make out the vehicles in front of that car but, given that all other traffic appears to be moving, it would seem to me that the driver in front stopped dead, hoping that the car following would hit him. When that didn't work he either dropped it into neutral, or put it into reverse, in order to cause a collision.

My opinion only, of course.

You better believe it does. The original link reminded me of this vid from a few years ago.

In car camera FTW!

LOLOLOL So fake and gay.

Thank you OP for sharing this information with us. I'll be more cautious out there in this scamming society we live in. And I agree with other poster we should do a group buy or something.

What do you guys think about GoPro Hero HD camera? Too expensive? Any good?

OK so we all rant on GTAM but that goes nowhere. What sort of a rate reduction would we see in general percentages if the fraud was eliminated? The insurance industry could get the plate number and cancel the guys policy, putting him into facility for life. Instead they say "Oh well it happens so we bump the rates while lowering coverage for innocent victims." Pathetic.

Or for about $300 you can get this

Vehicle Black Box Car Camera - Record Interior & Exterior Views - GPS Data Logger - G-Force Sensor

Other than only being 640x480. I'd like it to be able to make out license plates fairly clearly.

I agree with you there but sometimes all that you need is to clarify a situation and, for those instances, having a 'set and forget' camera would be good enough.

You won't anything that says that.
Might as well look for the Easter Bunny.

I've heard good things about the DOD GS600.

The only problem with a lot of these consumer units is there's a small delay between recordings if you don't use a fast enough SD card. So if anyone does buy one, make sure to get a fast Class 10 SD card along with it.

Might as well look for the Easter Bunny.

Wh.... What are you trying to say? :o

I personally use an app on my Android phone called DailyRoads Voyager. Once the allocated space (you set how much it can use) is full, it starts to loop over. But if you tap on the screen while it is recording, it will permanently save that file and the two before it. It also uses the accelerometer in your phone to detect a collision, and automatically saves those files too.

It can record in as high of quality that your phone's camera supports.

It also integrates with GPS and can overlay speed, time, coordinates, etc. in the video file.

Hey thanks a lot for the link to this app in the Android market, of course there was an App for that.. I just downloaded it and will use it religiously. I see all sorts of BS when Im driving around, it would be fun to catch it all.

No problem!

It works pretty well for me, although it has started crashing on me in the last few days :\ Not sure if it's the app or my phone. It'll lock up and say "Cannot communicate with camera".

Damage was probably even less than the $500 he asked for. Here's a pic of the accident from the Toronto Subaru Club forums:
