There be Pirates !

Dumping tax payer funded liquidity (technically future tax payer given the epic deficits they run) into the markets is not running the country like a business. Well, maybe like a business where the executives are purposely running it into the ground while maximizing their and their friends profits--which does happen. They can't keep it up forever and the crash will be epic, we just don't know when.

Not how any sane business person runs a business that intends to actually stay in business.
This is a tough call to print money and dump it into the market -- but historically it has worked for big economies. I worry more about Canada doing this -- we're not a big enough economy to be diluting it as we are now. This year Canada will be paying $26Billion on debt service, with the projected deficit this year that debt service cost will jump to more than $35billion. The increase in interest payments alone from this year to next is staggering.

That means every person who pays tax in Canada will have to pony up an additional $500 each year for the rest of their lives just to pay the interest on JT's 2020 deficit.

Very true, but the situation in the US is much more dire both in the ratio of population and on the size of the economy. Trudeau will have to try much harder if he wants to keep pace....

That is ridiculously over the top ...you have no idea what interest rates, inflation tax rates or deficit/surplus will be for the next 40-50 years.
Roll that back 50 years and it's like saying $50 for the rest of their lives in 1950. Sounds like a bit of Scheer nonsense.

Every dollar put into the economy by the gov't generally results in $5-$7 worth of economic activity...but then again you are no Keynesian clearly.

This is as much a war footing as anything Canadians have experienced in current lifetimes and a good opportunity to correct some inequalities ....like tax the damn REITs out of existence for instance. 65% returns FFS. There's your $500 right there. :coffee:

Call it nonsense if you like. The bottom line is you have to pay interest on the money you borrow, and I doubt money will be getting any cheaper than it is today. Deficit spending is the same as you spending on a credit card - it cost money to service debts.

Ya I don't know whether inflation or interest rates will change, but I do know both are likely to make matters worse than they are. Inflation drives interest rates and in inflationary times income gains trail -- meaning higher deficits, and less consumer spending power. Money can't get much cheaper today, and as debt increases credit ratings get lowered which drives up debt service costs.

While Keyes theory does work to stabilize brief rough economic periods, as interest rates approach zero or recovery becomes protracted supply side stimulus becomes increasingly ineffective - we're close to that now. As a result, the only options left are austerity or tax increases (read up on Greece) - that's all I'm saying, and that my friend is a fact, not theory.

Finally on your point of inequity -- Keynes theory doesn't' deal with inequities between rich and poor. History does, and it's painfully clear that when Keynesian inspired stimulus happens, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

I know I've posted this before. I've lost track of where and how many times ...

Such as a serious clamp-down on illegal immigration. Banning immigration from countries with a terrorism problem. Running the American economy like a business instead of a stupid lawyer.

Like the businesses he bankrupted multiple times, including a casino (apparently the house doesn’t always win)? Like the Trump University that was a scam? Like his daddy’s fortune he squandered?

Illegal immigration isn’t actually a serious issue in the US but it’s a great distraction if you’re dumb and racist.

Countries with a terrorist problem all seem to have been occupied/invaded/fought over by the yanks. Really odd coincidence that.

Such as a serious clamp-down on illegal immigration. Banning immigration from countries with a terrorism problem. Running the American economy like a business instead of a stupid lawyer.

Lets not forget putting children in cages, conspiring with foreign countries to enrich himself and boost his re-election chances, shaking the hands of murderous dictators and trying to be friends with them, attacking war heroes, inviting the Taliban to come visit and hang out at Camp Davic, supporting the white power crowd, sending military police to black bag it's own citizens, floating disallowing it's own citizens to return from other countries if there's any chance they may have been infected by Covid while gone (pot, meet kettle), started trade wars with other countries that have cost the USA dearly and accomplished little to nothing, sends his children to handle serious world issues despite having no experience in the important issues they're dealing with, uses the POTUS branding for personal enrichment, stacks his white house staff with clueless dolts, many of whom are now in jail because of their actions, stoking racial tension, denying science, all while blaming everything that's gone wrong in the last 4 years on Obama.

I could go on for another billion lines if you'd like.

But hey, there's those three things you mentioned, which in reality, are all red herrings in the grand scheme of things.

The town of Sturgis had a meeting and vote. Sixty percent voted nay. But they went ahead anyway because people would come anyway and they need the sanitation etc. The town has no balls. Block all the roads and highways and crack some skulls if necessary.

Problem was the town voted no but the State and Governor refused to close the state or cancel anything. It would have been impossible for the town to stop the riders from coming without the State backing them. The Governor however was only looking at the dollar signs. I don't remember what the number is, but the Sturgis rally accounts for a real percentage of the total State income for the year!

The town did *not* vote no. They voted 8 to 1 to hold it.

I've no idea where that number came from, but on page one of this very thread I posted a citation for my own....

A little more than 60% of people in the city voted against holding the event this week. But the city council approved it anyway.

So you're both right.

Everyone's a winner! Yay!

so the townsfolk voted 60% no
council votes 8-1 yes

I see democracy is bought and paid for thoroughly in those parts

Honestly...I feel I need to know this.
