The Reasonably Priced Used Motorcycles for Sale Thread

Just a question. How is it too limited for touring? With luggage it's just as capable as your cb500x, cb1000f, or the vfr800, as well as a multitude of other bikes.
I think the biggest problem for the 1200 was it was an answer to a question nobody asked. It sort of sits in the same category as the K1300S, but is even heavier. It's got sportier ergos than most full-on tourers, and the tank range is mediocre at best. On release, everyone wanted a new VFR800, light(ish), enough power (120ish), and stone reliability for big miles. Instead, it was an expensive porker with more power than necessary (even restricted in the first two gears), missing some of the gubbins that were becoming standard in the class, and adding unnecessary complexity like a semi-auto DCT that didn't work very well in auto mode.

At a price like this (definitely reasonably priced!), though, some of those drawbacks are easily rectified and big miles could easily be done. The only thing that's hard to fix is the tank range. If I wasn't spending my spare change on a stupid near-vintage track bike, I'd be seriously tempted...

There are very few luggage options, it's marginal two up due to the design, top case looks ridiculous ( as it does on the CB500x as well ). Limited driving range - just not a lot of accessories out there compared to other machines.

For a solo tourer it's a lovely machine but hell 600 lb, smallish tank and eats fuel, marginal screen for distance and iffy ergos. CBF1000 has a lot of upgrades around as it was so popular in Europe but one of the major reasons I sold mine was the 300km tank range and a thirsty power plant not quite ergos. ( limited windscreen choice ).
Sure you can make it work but...read the review ...he says it better than I can.

Yep - suit a taller rider so the reach to the bars is not so annoying and 300 km is "okay" ....I did a couple years with the CBf1000 and some 3-5 days tours and it was just "okay" except when I twisted the throttle and got a big grin. That's what I miss on the CB500x ...no thrill cept for the $9 fill up during early Covid.
Reports say it feels lighter than the wet weight would indicate but like my ST1100, not so easy to flick in the twists where the CB500x ( and the Vstrom 650 unloaded ) is a treat. You are bang on that people wanted an advanced VFR800 and Honda finally delivered it a few years late and then killed the VFR1200 in 2017.
Fair assessment here.

I'm fond of a good automatic ( my Burgman 650s ) but Honda never got the DCT to be consistent cept with the paddle shifter.

2016 super adventure, 25k kms for 13k

Comes with electronic suspension and heated grips, and all that luggage, if it also includes cruise control this might be a steal.

Yep, includes cruise control as well...

Too heavy for a sports bike - 609 lb, too limited for touring ...and DCT
I didn't like it when I took it out at Rock the Red.
Goes like stink off the line but hell you are way beyond speed limits.

Good reason Honda brought the VFR800 back.

Gorgeous looking ride tho. 2010 Honda VFR1200F Road Test | Rider Magazine | Rider Magazine

Why would you buy this over an ST1300? The 1300 is a brilliant tourer, easy on fuel, long range, good 2up -- everything the VFR needs to be a great tourer.

This reminds me a bit of the DL1000 vs the DL650 - a hulking big sister who's looking for a place to happen.

If those were the only two choices, I'd have the VFR over the ST all day. I'm definitely not a typical tourer buyer, though, so that would explain sales numbers...

For what (little) it's worth, I don't care about two-up as my wife is not a happy passenger, the tank range is no biggie as I'm happy to get off every two to three hours anyway, and I prefer a forward reach riding position over something too sit-up-and-beg. I think the VFR is much better looking (possibly damning with faint praise, though), and I'd be very surprised if it wasn't more fun over on its ear. Add a 50 hp advantage and it's not even close...

I'm planning to do some touring on my Tuono this year, so MMMV...

800 or 1200?

800 or 1200?
I was talking about the 1200, but if you add the 800, for me, it would be 800 > 1200 > ST, all things being equal.

But good luck finding a clean, post-VTEC VFR800 with less than 20k on the clock for around $6k. Same for an ST. That 12 is a lot of bike for almost SV650 money, especially considering the low mileage and seemingly clean condition...

All a moot point for me, though, tempted as I am by the 12. Just dropped enough at Accelerated Technologies yesterday on some 20 year old suspension to cover more than a third of that bike. Add all the other bits I've bought over the winter, and I could've had both VFR's listed here and had change back. Building a track bike is up there with buying new electronics as the quickest way to depreciate cash...

Have you ever owned a boat?
Ha! Fair point. I grew up around them, always on the water, and my dad has owned/raced many sailboats, including International 14's, a B-14, Lasers, Optimists, a Shark, and his current Viking 34. That was enough to put me off ever buying one...

Used to play around with albacores and lasers years ago. Man that was a lot of fun, not sure if I could still do it since it’s been a while

In a few years we'll probably get another dinghy. Maybe a laser? I need something family friendly, the last one was way too hairy for tiny monsters (Tornado).

I took a hobie cat out a couple years ago on vacation. First time captaining a cat and felt like a total newb lol. Not sure if it was the rust or the fact I’d never helmed a cat but most likely it was me.

They are definitely a different beast. You need to sail the apparent wind, not the real wind and they don't tack worth a damn. Did you have enough wind to get it flying? That is an amazing feeling (although you are courting with disaster).

Next one will be a monohull again. My wife doesn't mind dumping it as long as we can get it back up and that is not always assured with a cat.

The problem came in when trying to turn back and tack so maybe it wasn’t all my fault but I won’t exclude my own responsibilities in the situation

There's a healthy Star fleet in Toronto if you like racing. Splits the difference on dinghy and keel, and they're fun to sail. Not the fastest boats, but it's all relative.

For pure speed on the wind, nothing beats an iceboat, but good ice on a big enough lake is harder to find than it used to be...

Albacores are underrated boats, as they look a bit tubby. Great boats to learn in, I spent a couple summers sailing them in Junior Club.
