The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

This new Panerai is ingenious. 4 of the 6 barrels drive a generator that powers the electric lume. The other 2 give 3 days of power reserve for the hands. I like the look of the ceramic Ti coating. Too big, but cool, none the less.

Looks like Panerai has been taking modernist styling cues from Unimatic on that one, especially with the chunky indices. Not totally my cuppa, but cool to see them pushing the limits and not just doing the hundredth Luminor variation...

Perrin is moving to Vancouver:

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT PERTAINING TO THE BUSINESS TRANSITION OF PERRIN SUPPLY
Effective July 1, 2024, H. & W. Perrin and Company will become Perrin Supply Ltd, with a new home and team.

Somal out of Brampton is good. Have bought ETA movements, Kinetic batteries, tools and such from them, no issues. Their ordering involves some order + wait for stock confirmation emails, but they're solid. They do have a walk-in desk, as well.

Thats a shame, they are/were a great bunch

Below is copied the email that I received from them:

Effective July 1, 2024, H. & W. Perrin and Company will become Perrin Supply Ltd, with a new home and team.

We are extremely excited to announce the new team taking the torch from Ed and Maurice and to assure you that we will do our utmost to carry out the same level of service and delivery of high-quality products we’ve all benefitted from over the years. As beneficiaries of Perrin’s products for almost 65 years ourselves, we know the needs and challenges faced by the watch and jewellery industry and that reliable service and good value are musts to perform to the standard we all prize for our long-time customers. As a small independent jewellery family that has relied on Perrin to fulfill our own watch and jewellery repair services and jewellery manufacturing needs, we can assure you that we understand what it takes to compete and serve our client base effectively. We are eager to meet you all and to find out how we can best serve your unique needs.

And so, it is our great pleasure to introduce the new Perrin team and location.

Effective with the changeover of staff and location (July 1), you can continue to order in the very same ways you do now. The website and phone numbers will remain the same. Some email addresses will change but we will update you before July 1. The product lines will in large part remain the same, with new lines being introduced early in the Fall. We also ask for your feedback on new products you’d like to see available at Perrin.

Regarding our new location; Perrin Supply Ltd. will be moving to Vancouver, British Columbia. While we haven’t finalized the open hours yet, we will be open early to accommodate Eastern and Central Canada. Being on the West Coast, we can now also extend the shipping deadline which means even more timely service for day-to-day receipt of goods. We anticipate orders received by 5pm EST/2pm PST will typically still ship same day. We are working hard to secure the lowest possible shipping rates to ensure quick overnight and two-day options for the same or less than your current costs even if you are in Central and Eastern Canada. Customers in the West will see a significant reduction in shipping costs for all our goods. Stay tuned for more details about shipping rates and timelines. Local pickup will also be available.

Moving the operation will take some time, but you can continue to order online or by email and be assured your products will be shipped towards the end of the second week of July. We will release further contact information for any interim questions before the end of June and a more detailed ship date for orders received between June 30 and July 8.

Please look for more information to follow as the transfer of operations nears. If you have any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact Ed or Maurice.

We are eager to begin serving you soon and hope you will continue to support the Perrin tradition.

The new Perrin team.

Peter, Drew, Mark & Sacha

I like the walk in desk method best. I like to meet the people I'm dealing with, and I always learn something. Trekking to Brampton presents another dimension to the experience. Likely, not a good one. :)

Recent marginal watch haul.

Lucerne. It feels like a POS.

Lucerna 30 jewel Felsa 1560 movement (but a bidynator rotor? frankenwatch?). Mainplate appears to be copper?

@GreyGhost Do you repair them yourself?
That's the plan. We'll see how it goes. Most of these were exceedingly cheap as I assume the learning curve will involve some sacrifices.

Holdup right now is I need smaller screwdrivers (down to 0.5mm as many of my practice watches are tiny) and am not willing to pay retail for a decent set. I have normal small screwdrivers but taking apart movements is a whole new level of tiny.

Don't hate me because I am beautiful, but my wife bought me this today. Keeping me in the lifestyle I am accustomed to, but no where near as baller as others here.

Just a phone pic.. Now I can measure the distance to enemy artillery with a watch (Telemetre), a practical hole in the collection filled. The outer scale measures the distance between something you can see (flash) and something your can hear (speed of light vs speed of sound). Also works for thunderstorms.

I was shocked at how remarkably hard it was to find a store with it in stock (or that carried it at all), had to haul out to CF Markville. Such is B&M today.

Tissot 1938 chrono...

I love a good vintage-styled chrono. Was admiring a Longines Avigation Big Eye the other day while being a cliché husband and killing time waiting for my wife to finish shopping in Mapleview Mall. Enjoy that, it'll be fun.

Moments = boutique tax
Frick, it was horrible. He kept dropping the price on the Longines to where I had to almost physically grab myself by the neck and drag myself out of there. We're looking at picking up a travel trailer, so more watches aren't in the cards right now.

Also saw that Mariani (currently of Oakville) is putting in a shop there. It's definitely a higher-end approach to Moments, so could see a lot of buyers trying stuff on at Mariani with all the stock they carry, then heading over to Moments to work out a deal...
