I've decided it's time for a dressy watch, classic and clean design and fits well under .... There's a Tissot Chemin de Tourelles model that looked fantastic under the bright jewellers lights when I was at Ashley,
As someone who loves the utter screaming chaos of a race start, I'm not a fan of this stuff. I think you should ditch the GPS and get the Heuer Yacht Timer and actually use it! If your club racing is anything like ours, the PHRF differences make the start less critical anyway, as the newer boats dash off ahead and there's less conflict at the marks and being ahead on the upwind leg is less of an advantage. Then again, I crew on my dad's boat, and he still races a Viking 34 specifically because it has a tiller, refuses to race anything with a wheel, and our main competition is a J/109. Then again again, he wasn't shy about flying carbon sails...Timer related , on my sailboat we race is a gps based digital timer . We sail up to the committee start boat and ping the location , sail to the other end of the start line and ping the end marker. It then automatically computes the time when you sync it with the 5 minute starter gun . It will give you a readout on distance to the line based on approach speed and time to the line using the same GPS speed . If the race committee messes up time you can hit a re sync button and it fixes itself . Rechargeable and day/night screens . Once you start it then switches over to a digital compass and will tell you if your up or down on your path to the next turning mark. It’s worth about 2k US . You still need to know how to sail , but it does a job that used to be a PITA when trying to look at a watch and the 14,000lb boat aiming at you .
I have this in blue. It's decent "beater" dress watch, but a little too large for my taste at 42mm
If I could do it all over again, I'd go for the smaller version 39mm or the "gentleman "
He has a Universal automatic with the second hand as a small dial at the 6o’clock mark . Early 1960s for $650.00
. If mom gives me Christmas money I’ll
own it next wk. If mom stiffs me again I may have to buy it anyway .
My background was one design, if you didn’t start at the front it was a lot of work, then big boats a 43 then 59 and last a 60, if you got buried there it was more work and with the timer mounted on the mast everyone knows the time . Watches are useless unless everyone gets one . Garmin and KHS have an integrated system where all the watches on board will sync and even the bowman gets a timer . It’s about 10k to integrate so that won’t happen now I’m a PHRF hack . Viking 34T would be a fun boat , I hope your dad flies spin so he can windshield washer his way downwind . I like those boats a lot. Of your dad raced out of RHYC or 50point I’ve probably sailed against him .
Back to watches , not boat timers . Mom was underwhelming this Christmas , looks like the Universal is on my dime
, however a 1960s Seamaster has turned up in the Millenium shop so that may win, and I do like waterproof watches .
My daughter gave me this portable sundial which includes a compass to orient it. Gonna have to do some research to see just how it's supposed to work.View attachment 65144View attachment 65146

This literally posted up on my FB feed. Couldn’t figure it out.You would guess Swatch, but Fossil did it. I'd rate it as one of their nicer pieces.
I saw the Fossil one actually is a normal watch underneath
Considering most of the gifts we exchange are thrift store finds I'm going to say it's a replica. Is it a replica or original? They appear to be quite valuable depending on model etc. Antique Sundial Compass Level Marin Willebrand Pocket Watch (See Video) C. 1700: ashlandwatches.com

Given what looks like machine engraving and brass screws, I would guess relatively modern cool toy.Considering most of the gifts we exchange are thrift store finds I'm going to say it's a replica.
