The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

...
The Garmin ones are definitely styled to be more 'sporty' and still look very smartwatch-ey. Skagen and Fossil make similar hybrids to the Citizen, I think with identical screen and internals. If I were buying MSRP, I probably would have gone with something like the one above, but the sale was limited to a few models, so I couldn't be too choosy.
Way back when Garmin entered the watch biz, they did the GPS tech, Timex did the movement, case, strap, and manufacturing. In the late 90s, Microsoft, Garmin, Swatch and others looking to do advanced watches partnered with Timex for development and manufacturing.

I remember my dad sending me a prototype Forerunner in '99, it was a Garmin GPS III with a wristband.

After Garmin went public, they bought a small Swiss watchmaker to do the styling, then tooled up in the USA to make watches around 2008. I think they still use Timex for the cases and straps.

For my money I would get a cheap Seiko automatic instead. The SKX007 is great though I think discontinued now, not sure what the current iteration model is. Just such a nice elegant watch that is a modern classic.

Skx007 is cool but more than double the money.

Was going to say you're wrong but google tells me otherwise. I paid $150 for mine about 15 years ago but the market is nuts on them right now.

On the other hand, any "heritage" Seiko automatic will still be worth money down the line, the Citizen will be worth scrap

I’m an automatic or winder snob, but I do like blue and that’s a great deal on a very good watch.

I know you like blue, which is why I asked. How do you like this blue one? I have one exactly like it, made in 1969. it seems to run OK though I haven't fully wound it. It's been in a drawer for 50 years and I can assuredly say it's never been serviced or even opened. I want to sell it.

As I tell everyone who asks , and sometimes those that don’t . Buy a watch you like and will wear.
That whole other side of the game , buying watches that will appreciate in value, investment watches , is very cool and lately anything with Rolex , -Patek, Omega has done just fine . I like watches that are worn , have a story and are ok being a bit used . I’m not a tray in the safe guy , I will wear an 8k watch diving , because if it’s a problem , it shouldn’t be a dive watch .

Early in this thread someone mentioned a local source for watch parts. Can you remind me? I'm looking for a bezel insert and a crystal for my Heuer 1000.

If you have trouble getting the bezel there is a Vintage Heuer group on FB.

Thanks. I'm not a FB user. Some sites I can see anyway, but that's not one of them.

I bought it! Thought it would make a nice blue beater. It came today. There's a tiny sliver of some foreign matter on the inside of the crystal. They offered me $40 off as compensation. I declined and opted to return it. It was running, with the time and date set correctly. I thought that odd for a new watch, however perhaps it's not, with this technology. Or maybe I'm not the first guy to spot that piece of debris.
