The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

Not permitted on FBMP... but there is a crap tonne on there, reporting is hit and miss but it creates a nice distraction while sitting on the toilet...

That one was not sold.... ;)

Received my Laco today, and generally very happy with it. Buying it was a bit of a trip (lots more on that below), as I was looking for a flieger and Laco came up as a decent value option with some actual links to Germany (even if the movement is a classic Miyota entry-level automatic). Ended up getting a Laco Aachen 42, with 42mm stainless case, sapphire crystal, Type 2 dial, and so, so much lume (everything but the circle and script):

After doing my usual Googling and searching the typical spots (eBay, Chrono24, Kijiji, etc.), I came upon the Wheel, some kind of bizarre watch gambling website related to the crazily bad value Watch Gang subscription service. (For those unfamiliar, the Watch Gang subscription service means you pick a tier between $75-400 USD per quarter to get some mushroom brand watch valued at MSRP but actually worth less than a quarter of that. If you're lucky, you'll break even, but from what I read from people who used the service, typically the resale is around half what you pay. All for the privilege of getting some random watch that you may hate.)

So they also have The Wheel, where you pick 3 x Tier 1, 2 x Tier 2, and 1 x each of Tiers 3, 4 and 'Grail', and then 'spin' to see which you get. In theory, each tier is supposed to increase in value and desirability, with Tier 4 having watches from respected brands like Marathon, Longines, Junghans, Alpina, and Ball, while Grail has Omega, Breitling, Montblanc, etc. Of course, the odds of hitting those higher tier items are infinitesimally small, with the T&C's listing the odds as Tier 1: 87.2%, Tier 2: 10%, Tier 3: 2.36%, Tier 4: 0.4%, and Grail at 0.04%. In other words, if you won't be happy with your picks for Tier 1, you're an idiot for giving them money. Weirdly, I mostly hated the watches in Tiers 2 and 3, but they offer the option to downgrade if you like a lower tier item better. I also mostly hated the Tier 1 watches in the Luxury ($385 USD per spin) and Premium ($585) categories.

Fortunately for me, they had some automatic Laco flieger watches in Tier 1 that I liked, including the one I got, a 39mm version of same, and a blue dial edition. The cost to 'spin' for the 'Sport' category at $285 USD (~$390 CAD) was less than the cheapest price I could find for the watch elsewhere, so I figured it was worth a shot. Naturally, I landed on Tier 1 and got the watch I was shopping for to begin with. I was a bit worried they'd ship out a second or warranty return, but the one I got seems mint.

Anyway, I'm ambivalent about supporting a business with such shady practices, but I got the watch I wanted for a fair price, so can't complain too much. I'd try again if there was something else in Tier 1 that I really wanted, though I haven't seen anything else worth taking a punt on.

A couple of stores I am going to check out in the next while.

Nordstrom starts their liquidation tomorrow. They have the typical department store fashion brands, so not a lot of love for most of those brands but they also carry some better stuff, might be a deal on a Longines, Tissot, etc.????

Hour Passion is a swatch group "outlet" store, one opened in the outlet mall in NOTL, will have to see what they have. Maybe normal outlet mall shenanigans, buy one for full price, second one 30% off...who knows.
Nordstrom is a bust for a value shopper. They are in liquidation but for now 5% off with some exclusions. This is probably going to be a sale where the increase discount by 5% a week like winners. By the time you get to a significant discount, only the turds will be left.

I was listening to that on the radio. I’ve never shopped at Nordstrom but from the sounds of it…lot of disappointment.

People will wait but for now why bother discounting too much. May as well make as much as you still can.

Anyone buying now is stupid. You have lost any ability to make a return or exchange for any reason in exchange for a 5% discount. It's actually a worse deal than buying at full price last week.

It would be interesting to see how watch companies deal with this. Often, liquidation is conducted by xyz liquidation inc operating in the stores previously known as nordstrom. No warranty on the watch as you bought it from a non-authorized seller?

Just picked up a Seiko SRPD76K. Been looking for one for a few months but they have been out of stock or priced unreasonably high. The Bay had a sale and was able to pick it up for $360+tax (still high but a lot cheap then other places).

I'm not a big fan of how it looks stock, but I've already bought all the parts to add a root beer bezel, which will make it look awesome.

What I'm going for after swapping out the bezel, bezel insert, chapter ring, and crystal.

with that much Lumi you'll be doing your own chemotherapy , dont walk with your hands at your sides unless youve had all the kids you want

It's actually weirdly low key, especially compared to my Citizen divers with their huge blocks of lume for ISO certification. It's not super bright when you turn out the lights, but seems to stay illuminated for a long time. I was able to see it fairly clearly in the dark at about 5 am.

My favourite for that are the Marathon 'military' watches with the tritium tubes and the little radioactive logo on the dial:

I love lume stuff. I have a pair of glasses I leave on my nightstand, super easy to find in the middle of the night.

My Tissot arrived and it’s very nice. Bit of a (nice) surprise to find that the leather strap that looked like a traditional buckle strap is in fact a fancy deployment clasp (I didn’t see that in the description). Not bad at all for under $300.

I thought Tissot was very expensive brand…

Pics please!

Tissot is mid tier. In most cases similar to seiko. They make lots of quartz fashion watches and some mechanicals. Start thinking about paying four figures for a tissot and it is worth looking at alternatives before you pull the trigger.

Tissot does all level of stuff , they make a Seastar automatic with a silicon spring and holds 80 hrs of power reserve, an industry benchmark . Or you can buy an under $300 nice dress watch .
No need to blow your brains out for a nice watch.

They use the calibre in a number of watches (possibly different versions). Not that expensive, either.

Newish one for under a grand.

I have a Seastar blue face dive watch , 80hr reserve , on a silicone rubber band , I bought new at $800ish about 4 yrs ago . My wife says all my dive watches look to similar, my kids also look similar but are unique and different. She thinks my comparison is a bit of a reach.
