Breaking news: just ordered my new #Bridgestone #Battalax #S20's from Pete's. Can't wait to see how well they hold the ground!

Sent from my iPhone. (not while I was riding)

For anyone interested....

Completed the motor/stator and rotor swap tonight... Motor bought from Zdeno's....
Bike fired up right away, but the oil light didn't turn off. Odd....

Dan came over and completed the swap with me... Steve showed right after the bike was running.. I *WAS* SOOOO happy it started right away.

Steve thought it wise to check the oil pressure... loosened a few nuts, nothing... not a good sign... took off the oil filter completely and turned the motor over... not even a tiny squirt of oil... and yes, I filled it.

Tried a suction pump to try to prime the oil pump.. no success...

Looked at the manual some more. To reach the back of the oil pump, the clutch has to come out - hope to inspect the screen and overpressure valve. If that doesn't solve the problem, the motor needs to be split. In which case I might as well have stayed with my old freakin' motor!!!! SON OF A B*TCH!!!!

Going to call Zdeno's tomorrow and inform them the motor is no good. I'm not expecting a warm reception, as the bill of sale has a "SOLD AS IS" stamp on it.
Still, hoping, that's all I can do right now... If they do shove me off, well, hope the fix Steve has in mind (clogged screen or faulty valve) works...

Otherwise, I'm out $900 for the motor, $100 for steaks and beer, and have wasted a bunch of good people's time (Thanks to all --- Dave, Randy, Dan, Steve and Ian from Tri-City... you've all gone above and beyond and I can't say how much I am indebted to you all).

****** buzz, Hope Zdeno's is better to you then they were to me.

Heading out for a ride now .. Nowhere in specific. I'll check my phone a couple times if no ones answered I'll b cruising alone.

Called Zdeno's this morning.
Told him the bike has no oil pressure, and had 3 guys (including a hydraulic engineer) verify it.

Said we would try overpressure bypass valve swap from my original motor as a Hail Mary fix attempt. Would even bring bike by for his own mechanics to test it out.

Al said he'd take care of me and give me a new motor if the fix doesn't work. If that's the case, I'll get his mechanics to take that Magneto Rotor out instead of us monkeying with it.

You guys up for another weekend of wrenching sometime maybe?
I figure I'll be able to remove most of the stuff on my own (or with minimal help) to save everyone else's time. With any luck, it would end up being an engine removal and installation of other one.

Glad to hear he isn't screwing you over. I would offer my help but I haven't done much engine work and it seems you have enough knowledable help already. Hope it goes smoothly from here on out.

Last night I finished re-wiring the Stator I got from there so it is up and running, Now just have to find someone that is looking to buy one lol.

Maybe he used his "angry moment" quota for the week when your gf stopped by.
Hopefully I'll be able to coerce the guys into doing yet another swap with me... hope it will go quicker and smoother this time -- have to get it running for the 18th!!!

Anyone headin' to Royal tonight? Their bike nights start this week I believe...6-9.

Story time with Dr. Evil...

So, I was busily ripping my bike back apart again in preparations of dropping the motor.
Steve comes by and for sh*ts and giggles, says we should pop off the left side engine case. It became apparent very quickly that side of the motor had been off already, and it was missing a bolt.

The clutch, well, the screws holding in the springs were FINGER TIGHT. Absolutely terrible... a little more looking.. EGADS!!! THE OIL PUMP GEAR IS GONE!!! I mean completely absent, not in the bottom of the case etc. So, somebody took the cover off, removed the clutch took of the retaining ring, took out the gear, put the ring back on and loosely put it back together! could have been disasterous!

So, going to see about picking up new gaskets ASAP. If that fails, have to clean up the metal as best I can and try using them again.

Going to put it back together again starting tomorrow. Busy Busy Busy...

Hopefully Zdeno's will do something for me... give me a warranty, or something...

Zdeno's Motor Swap Update.

Well, they're being very apologetic and helping me out with my motor issue.
Al was genuinely surprised that the oil pump gear was missing.

They're giving me an in-store credit for the troubles I've had with this motor.
It's fair on their behalf, so I have to give them credit for standing behind the motor they sold me. Good on them!
Earned alot of respect with their actions on this one.

I say bring the entire thing down there, say you sort it out for my inconvenience and put it back together. Although I also wouldn't trust them to actually do it right either. Its a start anyways. Still need to take it out saturday?

Well, they're doing me right, so I can't complain any further. They realize the motor they sold me had issues, apologized and gave me a good sized in-store credit ($100) for the problem I had.

Now, hopefully the oil pump will work without issue now that that gear is in place. Starting to put it (bike I mean - as noted earlier, I had taken off a bunch of parts already) back together later this afternoon after doing some errands etc.

Hahaha, I have to chime in with my own 'engine swap' story, have been through one lately!

I was having some carb issues with my 600 Bandit and I think Cyl 1 must have run a bit lean, and fried the piston.

So, via the great wide world of Kijiji, I found a wrecked Katana 600 (with 9000 unverified kms, probably true based on the half-worn OEM front tire on the front end) and grabbed the carbs and engine out of it for six hundy! And then spent four nights over the next two weeks at my friend's shop doing the swap...

It runs, but idles a bit rough, so it's going to the pros to finish. (I'd bet it's an exhaust leak but I'll let the tech sort it out.) I had some fun carb issues; the float needles were reluctant to seat after 3 years of sitting around with old gas in'em, but carb kits fixed that. The airbox boots don't fit perfect but they're not bad and seem to form a seal. Fortunately the Katana and Bandit 600's are 99.9999% the same - just had to re-solder one plug on the motor.

Good luck bigevildoer - it's the sort of wisens you up! Good to hear that Zdeno's is taking care of you very well - it would be very frustrating to do all that and then have a bum motor.

Yes they are. However, the trail report says there's mud, and asks riders to stay away until maybe late Monday.

See waterloocyclingclub.org for your trail updates.

If you're really craving a ride, the far side of the trails (off Snyder's road?) gets less traffic and dries better with sandier soil so it would be better to ride there after a rain.

How long did you run the engine without oil pressure? How much total run time, and how many seconds (I hope) at a time? Did you ever raise the revs beyond idle?

I ask this because there is a very significant chance that the bottom-end bearings may have been damaged by running without oil pressure until you figured out the problem. Problem is ... no way to know without splitting the cases!

I hope that in addition to that in-store credit, they stand behind you in the event that this engine has problems in the future.

If the engine lacks top-end power, it may be the bottom end trying to seize. If the clackety-clacker starts clackety-clacking, that's bad. Also, the next time you change the oil, inspect it very carefully for metal flecks (looks like metallic paint) and cut open the oil filter and do the same.

Removing the oil pan and inspecting it for metal flecks settled to the bottom can be a tell-tale, also.

Hey Brian.
Ok... let's see if I can get a semi accurate estimate of length of time without oil.
Started bike (3rd revolution and it fired). Noticed no oil light right away. Shut it down. 10-12 seconds maybe.
Checked all connections and oil level too. Everything seemed ok. Tried again. Oil light on. Thought maybe oil pump stuck, revved to 4000 (throttle blip), shut down. 5-7 seconds.
Tried vacuum priming oil pump, fired, no oil. 3-5 seconds.
Opened oil cooler bolt, fired, no oil. Shut down. 3-5 seconds.
Steve removed oil filler cap and fired. I was promptly sprayed by oil from the clutch spinning. 3-5 seconds.
Removed oil pressure sensor, turned over but without starting. No Oil.
Removed Oil Filter, turned over but without starting, no oil.

My estimates put it at about 34+ seconds, with all at idle except for blip to 4000 rpm. Margin for error, let's say 45-50 seconds total.

The engine pulled well at the track yesterday. Not quite as well as the old one, but that was more than likely due to this being back at stock gearing instead of the -1 front the other one was set at.

Will definitely check for metallic flakes in the oil very closely. Have to flush the rad one more time, so when I'm doing that, I'll drain a little oil out and see if there's anything i can see before heading off to Shannonville on Monday.
