TDLR; If people are too busy with their lives to help someone that could potentially be seriously injured, what are the chances someone is going to help a stranger with a broken down car?

yep , for sure. Espcially the "oh, there's a ton of people around, somone else will stop.. " thinking.

But, I'm amazed at how many Toronto Dash cam footage is being posted. I wonder - is it 1 in 100 cars or 1 in 1000 have cams? Maybe commuters more likely to have them?

I realized those days were long gone when I was 18. Rush hour traffic at Dufferin & Steeles @ 5:30pm, car gets rear ended at full speed by an SUV (BMW X5 - no attempt to brake) while the old mazda protege stopped at a red light. Kid screaming and crying in the back seat bleeding from his face from the small glass shards, bus stop with 15+ people standing about 20 feet away. I pull over to help (as it happened right beside me), no one else moved from the bus stop, no one pulled over to help (not even the rear-ender which was too busy picking up the pieces of his car and swearing at himself).

I was on my way to work at the time and everyone else was too busy to do anything about it.

The speed at which Fire, ambulance, and police got there and set up a roadblock was remarkable. Within 3 mins of placing the call, they were all there.

This is also in part caused by the bystander effect. The more people there are, the less likely an individual is willing to help. They think "Oh, there's 50 other people here. One of them will go help." But then all 50 people are thinking the same thing.

They might also not be confident in their ability to provide appropriate medical care. I think first aid/cpr training should be mandatory for everyone over 18.

I wouldn't necessarily intervene if I didn't see anything that I could help with. I'd just call for help.

What did you do to help the kid, console him? Was their parents ignoring him? If 5 more bystanders had gotten involved, would it have made things better or worse?

Well, at least the guy that started it got collected in the mess and wasn't able to drive away like it never happened.

A disproportionate number of these camera cars seem to be standard as you can hear them setting the parking brake when they stop (or are people setting the parking brake on 5 clicks in an automatic?).

I drive an automatic. I almost always set my parking brake. It's called a parking brake for a reason.

Looks like a wrx or sti. The former of which I hope is gonna be a manual the latter only comes in manual.

Every time I put the transmission in park, I set my parking brake as well.
I've actually always put it in neutral, then set the parking brake, release the foot brake, then to park. Reason being that the car then rests on the brake and not the tranny. May be flawed thinking, but it's what I do.

In neutral, 2 to 3 clicks holds my car on a slope. I have never been a fan of hard setting the parking brake (especially when the parking pawl or transmission is engaged as a secondary mechanism). If I am jacking the car up, parked on a really steep hill or have a trailer on, I will do a hard set.

Nah, the white truck that looked like it had a bucket got away scot free.

Certainly set the parking brake before engaging Park for that reason. But need to apply the brake pedal to shift the lever.

Who counts clicks? That's a bit obsessive IMO.

Yes. I skipped that part. I release foot brake then re engage and shift to park.

a follow up I found:
I am the cammer. I'll answer questions in this thread. My wife was driving, I'm the panicked guy calling 911 ;) We turned to the right at the end of the Video and parked. We both got out to help (we were the ONLY ones who came to help... btw). I finished my call with 911. The guy who caused the accident was drunk. He sat in his car for about 10 minutes and tried to start it a few times (perhaps to flee). Police still hadn't arrived when he got out of his car and started walking away. Down the sidewalk, away from the scene. I called 911 again to report that he was leaving the scene, and gave them a description (I could still see him, maybe 400' away). He walked to the other side of the road and the first cop car arrived. I pointed to the guy and they went and picked him up.
Other cop cars, an ambulance and tow trucks arrived soon after. We gave our reports to the police. No injuries. The guy was drunk and had no insurance.

its sure as hell illegal to do what that rider did, but think of it , he is riding a motorcycle for reason..and most likely he wants to get to his destination quicker and easier than a car would normally take him .

Honestly I am guilty of doing this many times , especially at night...plus even worse taxi drivers always use this lane to pull in front of other car when starting from stop light.
