The Bad Drivers of Ontario Thread

Driving around yesterday I came to the conclusion STOP signs were now invisible to everyone but me.

If getting compensation for a rear ender wasn't such a chit show It would be less of a worry. A bent car can be tied up or weeks or even months due to supply chain issues etc.
Speed limits are just suggestions
Stop Signs are optional
Yellow lights mean SPEED UP!
Red Lights mean look for the camera first
Turn Signals are optional (removed from BMW and Mercedes)
Tail Gating is a proper driving technique
A safe lane change is just change lanes and get out my way

Every rule is broken countless time with zero consequences.
Accidents go up in your area, so does your insurance.
Theft goes up in your area, so does your insurance.

The only fools are the one that obey the rules and respect the laws.

Had a school bus turn left in front of me from a side road with a stop sign Friday. It was close enough that I had to jump on the brakes to keep from hitting him. In his defense, he did sort of slow down a bit for the stop sign.

My mom's car been with the insurance company for over a week after her small incident.

No updates. No email. No call. No response to emails or calls, and no clue WHERE the car even is.

Insurance dispatched a tow truck last Monday...and it's now 1.5 weeks later with no updates whatsoever while she's stuck with an older RVR that blows chunks.

Didn’t even know that was an option.
could be, i had to sic one on Service Ontario way back when about some dumb stuff. not sure if there is one for insurance, but if so worth a shot.

threaten to call ombudsman.
Not much of a threat. I got hit by a taxi that was coming up behind me while I was making a left turn into a parking structure. The taxi went into oncoming traffic and up onto the sidewalk, where it finally broadsided me. Ombuds reviewed it and essentially said that I was lucky that the rules of fault determination only made me 50% responsible, because they would have found me 100% responsible.

what.

100% responsible for walking where you were supposed to? Boggle.

Anywho, in my case it did work out. SO basically refused to deal with a family member because they had no valid photo ID to register for a health card. I said i would sign as Guarantor and they refused to honor that even though i met the requirements. So i called the Ombudsman and they called the SO. Got a call the next day to come in at my convenience. Went in and got the red carpet treatment, Supervisor who was such a PITA 2 days prior was groveling and gave me a private room in the back to fill out the forms etc.

I assume he was driving not walking and turning left... taxi hit his car while he was crossing the sidewalk into the parking structure.

It may be one of those things about left turn being at fault by default.

I was driving. Technically. when you're turning into a private drive from a public street, a collision that occurs with a "vehicle that is passing" is 50/50 fault under the rules of fault determination. The ombuds either didn't understand the description of the event that I wrote in excrutiating detail or (more likely) just wanted me to go away. The collision actually took place on the sidewalk.

The taxi was blocking the single northbound lane to pick up a passenger. I signalled left to pass, right to go back, then 100 feet further on signalled my left turn. The taxi picked up his passenger and then hammered the gas to pass the now left turning me. Swerved and hit me on the sidewalk, on the west side of the street.

Always remember: It's your insurance company's ombudsman.

Right, except that the taxi was travelling in the same direction as me and made an (arguably) illegal pass (too close to an intersection).

misread the situation, that blows.

It's not Ontario but instead Pinal County, Arizona, but if you haven't watched "Fridays With Frank", you should. Pinal County is also the home of Sheriff Mark Lamb who many of you would recognize, if you've every watched TV shows like "Live PD."

I love the guy. One of my favourites was when he asked a speeder if the wing on the back of his car made it go faster or slower. Then he said if it's supposed to make it go slower it needs to be a lot higher.

He's a combo of a knowledgeable cop, responsible dad and stand up comedian. No B.S. or bully cop attitude.

He's great!

Hunt trucking and one of their drivers collected a good haul.of tickets after killing a buggy driver and horse. 32 charges laid mostly related to equipment and logs.

"Driving while under suspension" for a commercial trucking firm. That's even a step above the pizza delivery guy who hit me while his license was suspended.

I f a company hires a driver that at the time has a valid license is there any requirement on the ministry to report a later suspension to the company?

It would be a little like an insurance company advising a lender of a change in coverage on a financed vehicle.

1) Hiring company gets an abstract on the driver and hires him.

2) Hiring company advises MOT of the new hire.

3) MOT advises transport company of any change in status of the driver.

The scary part is this could easily transfer to a G license where an insurer gets an update when a driver gets tickets. The driver gets a mid term cancellation and partial refund. try to get a decent replacement rate. It's called facility.

Considering the number of additional charges related to this fiasco, the suspended license could be a minor consideration. Did anyone do any one thing right?

Every rule is broken countless time with zero consequences.

Until there's a political will to increase police enforcement of our roads, this will only continue. It's been sliding for 10-15 years now, and Covid drasticlaly accelerated the lawlessness out there. But when you've got every politician out there only worrying about getting re-elected instead of doing the right thing, well, this is what happens.

threaten to call ombudsman.

Didn’t even know that was an option.

In our RV total loss situation last summer (not sure I touched on it here) I mentioned the ombudsman option on a phone call during an impasse in the negotiations and it certainly had an effect. Within 48 hours I had a much more palatable offer for my loss.

A good company monitors this actively. I had my A licence accidentally downgraded to a D a few years ago when the medical extensions that were in place during covid ended without properly alerting all those who were about to be effected, and my company knew within 48 hours - even before I got my "new" downgraded licence in the mail. I got my medical done the next day and had my A again.

Problem is, that costs money, and there's a lot of garbage companies out there that don't want to spend a penny more doing the *right* thing when there's a *cheap thing* option.
