Sticking with the London theme:
Bad language if you're at work.
Bad language if you're at work.
Consecutive sentences don't serve the purpose of the judicial system and incarceration, which is to rehabilitate the criminal. Punitive systems like that in the United States, in which Consecutive sentences are far more common, more frequently result in recidivism. It is still possible for consecutive sentences, in Canada, but it is far less likely unless the crime is particularly egregious. It's more likely in the case of a repeat offender and sentencing guidelines also have increased penalties for multiple convictions.20 year old waste of skin wiped out a group of pedestrians on the sidewalk in London (highly likely it was a black pickup truck at high speed blowing reds and generally completely out of control). Four dead (quite likely most of a family with one child surviving). Driver arrested six km away.
@Rob MacLennan or someone else that has paid attention to the legal system for a while, why do we allow concurrent sentences? It seems to me that is a complete waste of time on all levels. It takes more paperwork to lay all the charges, more time in court, more for the jury to consider, etc but ultimately, it doesn't matter whether they killed one or four. The family gets small consolation that the offender got convicted for killing their person but it means absolutely zero the vast majority of the time (eg. The offender gets eight years plus a bunch of concurrent fours, the fours are an expensive pile of paperwork with no meaning).
I still believe that a conviction on a charge like this should make you ineligible to hold an ontario drivers license for your entire life. Get caught driving without one and it's an automatic year inside (with no lag, get pulled over, go see judge with video of you driving on a permanently banned license, judge sends you from the station to jail).

no innocence until proven guilty? In this type of situation, I'd be fine with the penalty being firing squad on the side of the road when they finally caught up with him... save the tax payer a crazy amount of money and justice served.
Not when your caught in the act, no.no innocence until proven guilty?
You still need a layer of oversight. How many people would get mowed down based on mistaken information? I would appreciate if there were an expedited prosecution available in cases crown considers clear. Eg. present video of him driving truck, video of him hitting people, documentation he had in truck indicating intent at trial next month not in three years. Not when your caught in the act, no.
We've already got enough issues with people being charged with stunt driving and losing their vehicles for a month, without recourse. You want to escalate that to public executions? I prefer justice, or at least an attempt at getting same.In this type of situation, I'd be fine with the penalty being firing squad on the side of the road when they finally caught up with him... save the tax payer a crazy amount of money and justice served.
And we have no idea under what circumstances they occurred, this has everything to do with what charge to lay and by extension what punishment is deserved. Not when your caught in the act, no.
What about terrorist charges?Four charges of first degree murder, one charge of attempted murder.
Maybe. Not the jurisdiction of London PD. Obviously they have been contacted from above to inquire. As I understand it, hate crime charges or terrorism charges come from a higher level of government (attorney general?).What about terrorist charges?

I was listening to the progress on the scanner. I didn't know it was tow trucks, I figured it was dumptrucks again. Complete lack of mainstream media coverage. I didn't search through alternative sources to see if anyone reported on it.Not sure where to ask this one, but anyone know WTF was up with some tow truck protest last week? apparently they shut down the 401/427 and QEW one day (Thursday I believe).

Cops were broadcasting progress. Lanes occupied, direction of travel, location of horde, if any infractions were noted etc. While I was listening they didn't bother saying what type of vehicles nor how many.Scanner?
IIRC it was tow trucks. But could have been dump trucks. I took the 407 because they were going west and I didn’t want to catch up to them.
I like the concept of the legislation, the details will be interesting. I know an honest tow truck operator who lost his CAA contract because CAA wanted one operator for a huge area. None of the little guys had a chance, only companies with ~100 trucks could be successful in the bid and he had <5. I could see the same problem with this if the areas are large. Keep the areas small (could be as small as distance between exits on 401 in Toronto) and the little guys still have a chance to get in. If they are found to be dishonest and overcharging, cancel their contract and don't allow them to bid for others. It was tow trucks. They're complaining about the new proposed legislation that would require tow companies to bid on exclusive contracts for specific major zones. Shady operators need not apply, no more multiple tow operators racing to the scene of a crash, no more charging whatever they think they can get away with. Boo hoo. Zero sympathy from the general public.
