The 2024 Great GTAM Blackout

Does anyone PERSONALLY know a reputable electrician that can install NG generator in the Etobicoke region?
a friend is a master electrician in Etobicoke, i can throw him a message.

I have that one at home runs all I need including a large geothermal heat pump. I have it hooked to propane. 8 years old and at 120 hrs no issues but it is on the 3rd set of starting batteries.
I have the auto exercise feature turned off as well got tired of hearing it run every week. So far it hasn't caused any issues I do check it every few months if the power hasn't been out to make sure batteries are good etc.

You should run it at least one a month to burn off any condensation (rust) and keep the oil circulating, and it allows you to monitor condition of batteries on start up as well.

On the upper Axis models (14kw and 22kw) they give you an option to set exercise weekly, bi weekly or monthly, and the colour display shows constant battery voltage among other things, so you can keep an eye on it when it starts dropping below 24v

24kw is way overkill. 14kw is all you really need.

If anybody is looking for a deal on a Champion Home Standby, I'm an authorized dealer.

I have a blow out deal, 8.5kw 120/240v home standby NG/propane WiTH fully automatic transfer switch for $3199 plus tax.

brand new in box, 10 year warranty. they are the quietest HSBs on the market.

Check out the reviews, and buy with confidence!

I agree 24 Kw is way more than needed (Requiring more fuel). Properly designed a small house can run on 30 amps 120 volts. My cousin had one. One circuit for receptacles and one for lights. Furnace was convection flow gas, gas stove, gas HW and clothes dryer.

When my S-I-Ls oven packed it in she baked cookies on the BBQ. However some aren't that smart. "Why can't I plug in more stuff. I have lots of spare receptacles?"

In a discussion with Ontario Hydro years back it came out that in case of a serious widespread outage their priorities for restoring power were:

1) City emergency facilities

2) City industrial facilities

3) City residential

4) Farms

5) Cottages (They could be a week or more)

Used sparingly your 8.5 KW could serve three houses, assuming natural gas and city water keep running.

In the winter you need heat. Modern high efficiency furnaces and hot water tanks need power.

In the summer, refrigeration is needed to keep food safe. Once over the start up surge, most refrigerators only draw around 5 amps. A BBQ with side burner keeps one fed.

For a day or so the above can be treated as an adventure. After a few days hot showers and decent food take on new meaning.

That's a really good price and I'm pretty sure the unit is a lot harder to steal than a 3Kw Honda at a similar price. A proper installation will add a big chunk and I would have trouble with the cost based on my 40 year history of outages in the city. If I was rural I'd order two and a supersized propane tank (That might need heat in winter)

Looking forward, people aren't getting smarter. The politicians and organizations they control are getting worse.

Will EV mania blow up the grid?

Will EV mania blow up the grid?

Yes it is! cheaper than most high end portables.

As for grid blow up? more like increasingly severe and fierce weather (freezing rain, ice storms, high winds), flooding, grid hackers, unprecedented AC use during the exterme summer, EV's, increasing use of 220V Heat pumps, and lesser occurences such as cars hitting poles, rodents blowing up transformers (happens more often than you think)
