That's a new one, punctured oil pan on the highway (with damage pics)

Guess I really should have bought a skid plate for 99% road only Super Tenere

On the 401 today cruising at 120kmh hear a crunch, look behind me to see a trail of smoke, immediately hit the kill switch and pull in the clutch. Was able to coast from the far left lane to the minimized shoulder (thanks construction!) and wait for a tow.

Sure enough, have a clean hole in the oil pan with some superficial damage around it. No idea what I hit as I didn't even feel it with the front tire.

Will check the engine tomorrow to confirm that it's not seized. Assuming it isn't, I need to do the math on whether it is going to make sense to file an insurance claim or not.

At minimum if I fix it I am going to need a new pan and gasket, new tires, and new rear brake pads. My deductible is the price of the oil pan alone so I'm going to have some thinking to do.

That kind looks like something went out that hole not in.

Sent from the future

You might be right. The exterior scratches and the hole being directly underneath something (oil pickup tube?) make me think it was external. Need to take a closer look tomorrow

Edit: Poked at the service manual. Looks like that is the dry sump tank at the back of the motor, crankshaft is parallel at the very front, so even less likely it was an engine failure.

Did you wiggle that piece that can be seen inside the hole? Does it move at all? These are two pictures of a super tenere oil pan in the rear sump area, looks like the hole is right next to that rectangular part. Judging from this video I can't see what that would be sitting there like that. When they are putting the sump back on in picture two it's a wide open area, similar to your service manual picture.

Maybe I am completely missing something here but what could that be in that area?

So I was also trying to figure out what is peeking out of the hole. In the first picture I think you have the wrong area circled (you have circled the drain plug) but on the other side it looks like there is a baffle cast into the pan. I wonder if that is the baffle broken off and sitting on its side?

Yep I did indeed, I caught that right after I posted that I was looking at it wrong. I posted a picture of the inside of the sump pan its self now.

Thanks guys, that looks to be it. I fished it out of the oil pan. Will drop the pan if I have time tomorrow to investigate further

Damn.
Glad you made it to the shoulder safely and eventually home.

Keep us updated on the cause of this.

Oh wow yeah, not good!
I think it is good actually lol, I'm 95% sure now it's "just" a piece of the oil pan and it was exactly the piece I was thinking of

Yeah true! You can see that bit he is holding sticking up in one of those inside pictures in the exact area it seems to have got hit.

If you hit moving debris, I suspect it would be a comp claim, not collision. That shouldn't affect your rates (if it is a comp claim. An animal would be a comp claim but I haven't dug into the specifics as to inanimate objects flying).

Unfortunately, I agree with the others and this looks like it came apart inside. The marks on the part in your second picture that look like it was chewed are quite concerning. Based on the schematics, I am surprised something back there had that much energy. It's pretty far away from the engine and the transmission appears to have another layer of separation above.

Do you still have warranty? If yes, I wouldn't be pulling more apart even though I desperately want to know.

I think the current thinking is that it was hit from the outside. That piece that came out was just in the spot it got windowed and broke off inside because of that. It stands straight up inside the pan right where the hole is, can be seen in the picture of the inside of pan.

Wow...glad you're alright and was able to keep it up with all that oil on the rear tire.

Why do you need new tires/brakes/etc? Is it due to the oil on them not able to come off?

You're probably looking at least $1000 in parts, may be worth going the insurance route. (I shuddered as I said that).

This all seems pretty crazy to me. Very interested to know what caused this.
And it's not even a Harley.

Also with insurance not sure if I would claim it (actually I wouldn't) might view as single vechicle accident where you would be at fault. Something like that. Just my guess, any way they can weasle out of it. Or just punish you with a rate increase due to claim.

glad you are safe reg, looks knarly
