Telemarketers - Help!!!!

I've been on the do not call list since right after it was set up.

I realize that there is not much I can do about guys selling me duct cleaning services from Pakistan - short of having them show up at my house and not answering the door - but I still get a large amount of calls from local telemarketers from places like St John, New Brunswick and Sudbury, Ontario, even after repeatedly asking to have me removed from their calling list.

Is there anything that can actually be done about these people? What have you tried? Was it successful? Anyone work in the industry with inside tips?

Sometimes I try to keep them on the phone for as long as I can with my best confused old man voice. I figure if they are talking to me then they are not annoying someone else :-)

There was a TV program recently on this and most of the duct cleaning ads came from some slum in Pakistan IIRC. There are apparently about 20 of these shops and they blatently ignore the rules.

The interviewer checked them out and even sent in a spy. Then the interviewer spoke with the CRTC to see why the DNC order wasn't being enforced. The answer was the usual pile of BS one would expect from a government slacker.

One woman ordered the duct cleaning so she could tell the arriving crew to P off when they arrived. (Two can play the jerk around game) but the cleaners never showed up.

BTW the telemarketers would say they were calling from Canada.

We now have cheap long distance calling which is great for us but the other edge of the sword is that it also works for the telemarketers.

Sorry no solutions. I get the duct cleaning calls 2 - 3 times a week.

Also the DNC doesn't apply to all calls. Research and political calls IIRC are legit. So if someone wants to do a study on duct dust they are good to go.

I don't know anyone who doesn't let their answer machine pick up unlisted/private/unknown number phone calls on their landline. Unless I recognise the number everything goes to the machine.

Not so for my cell as it's also a work phone.

Landmark Home Solutions. AArrgghh!!! I will never surrender!!!

I do not answer 1-8XX numbers. I only have a cell phone so have call display. If we get a call, which is less frequent at work, I just hang up, takes to long to be polite and they still try and hold onto you. I was getting 3 or 4 calls a day from 1-8XX numbers as well as numbers from California and Vegas. Not sure if they start to remove you when 2 weeks of daily calls brings not a single answer, but these telemarketers have pretty much stopped calling me.

I let my 3 year old son answer the phone when it's a telemarketer/unknown number. He likes to answer the phone because he's a "big boy", and telemarketers don't like to waste time.

Lol. A coworker does the same thing to his little guy, and tells him its Santa claus on the phone.

I was getting the duct cleaning calls pretty frequently last summer then they just stopped. Next time they call, tell them your interested in their services. Ask them the method they use during the cleaning process and if they use shampoo. Tell them you've attempted the task yourself with mixed results and you'd like to see a professional do the job. Really get involved in the conversation, waste as much of their time as you can. Then set up an appointment and ask for an estimate for cleaning two of them. When they question you as to what you mean, that's when you tell them you want both your pet mallard ducks cleaned but they have to be careful because you don't want them injured. Once they explain that's not what they do, just apologize and inform them you have electric base board heating. Thank you, come again!

I had to read this 3 times. I laughed each time. Awesome!

look up "sound boards", my favourite is full metal jacket or hank hill. There is a website with tons of them, have them book marked and ready with your speakers on. Be sure to record the hilarity.

If I end up answering one of these calls, I just tell them to hold while I go get the person they were asking for. Then I just leave the phone on hold until they hang up. Sometimes I'll just mute the microphone so I can listen to them. Same idea, if they can waste my time, I'll waste theirs and hopefully they won't call back.

Just hang up on them... easy.

I remember when gas companies were coming around door to door now THAT was annoying!

Ever since I switched to Magic Jack no more calls from telemarketers, and only $29 a yr, win, win
I have that too & long distance is cheap. I dont give out my new # to any store. I think they sell your # when you return stuff at the store.

I have a sign at my door now. Says no solicitors & peddles, lol

Sent from my Phone, dont judge the grammar

1. Switch to a BYOD VoIP service that allows you to block numbers.
2. Buy two telephone numbers. One that is for friends and family ONLY, and the other one you give out to anyone else who asks.
3. Set that second number to go straight to voicemail.

Works for me.

You know those "CONTESTS TO WIN A TRIP" and what not

Theyre usually a very good way to get leads/info

So technically theyre not telemarketing, theyre responding to your contest entry...
At least when i did telemarketing for 2 weeks thats how they did it.

Ask them if they are working in a building or near a high roof. Then kindly request they jump off the roof. Explain to them it's something their kids be proud of rather than knowing their parent does this.

I am too liberal for ya'll. Come on guys, they are just humans trying to make a living. Get mad at the companies that are paying for their services.

With that said, I haven't got one since I switched to MagicJack last year.
