Taxi Driver charged with murder of Skateboarder

the cabbie probably had a previous encounter with that skateboarder, actually a "long boarder". cabbie meant to bump him and make him fall, teach him a lesson, but the longboarder was a dumbass for not wearing a helmet, smashed his head on the curb and died.

Well, he wasn't wearing a helmet..that makes it ok then! :-)

Bicycles are an established form of vehicular transportation and for the most part, can coexist with autos if everyone follows the road rules. Skateboards are not and they don't belong on the road. That space between the right lane traffic and curb is crowded enough.

I'm not sure that really justifies someone intentionally running someone else over and killing them. Slow people don't belong in the left lane but I don't put a hole in them for it..

Hate cabbies, not only the downtown ones.

...but wouldn't it feel good if we could...just once...to teach them and their ilk a lesson...

Absolutely correct, they aren't bad drivers, they just have malicious intentions, they drive like idiots on purpose, because they are disgusting, low life scum bag people.

So anyone walking to their parked car is free game too?
This is BS, all of the above mentioned modes of transportation should be respected.
None of them are illegal.

I don't envy being a cabbie. Crappy hours, pay and respect while putting up with city traffic. That said if you can't take the pressure find a new job. Same goes for truck drivers that get paid by the load. I'm sorry your job is what it is but I'm not treating you like a 911 vehicle because you're behind in your car payments.

Part of the problem is the city and police not making it clear to the skateboarders, ebikers, joggers, cyclists that they have responsibilities too.

Back to policing for profit. If you can't nail them with radar or a breathalyser it isn't enforced.

RIP boarder. Even if you messed up it shouldn't have been a death sentence.

A lesson to all of us. If we ever get tempted to go physical think about the situation the cabbie is in right now. Not worth it.

:-) And leave their body by the side of the road with a sign that says "This is what happens to left-lane squatters!!" Nahhhh!!!!!

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooo, and if we're allowed to put their heads on pikes, I suggest, nay insist, that you have my e-babies. :D

A bicycle also takes up more room then a skateboard.

RIP Boarder, crappy way to go, the cabbie should be punished.

I often fantasize about some sort of KITT (knight rider reference) like turbo boost that can let me jump over slow left lane hogs..

That cabbie is lucky the boarder didn't have a bunch of friends around. I hope he gets whats coming to him!!

Tough guy behind the wheel of a 4000lb crown victoria, but I bet he's a pussy mano a mano. Going to be somebody's *****!!

No matter how you spin it, no one is going to agree with you that skateboarders have a right to be on the roads with traffic. Except skateboarders.

I don't see anyone agreeing with you either, I think the only thing everyone agrees on is that cabs shouldn't be on the road.

RIP Skater dude. I like cabbies when I need a cab, I hate cabbies while I'm driving downtown. The guy probably lost his cool and did something that he will most likely regret for the rest of his life. Just like some poster above said that he would have killed the cabbie if he saw this happening. The cabbie saw something that irked him(probably from something that the boarder did or not) and he thought he would be justified in bumping or intentionally hitting him, and here we are...

Terminology question. Murder or manslaughter? Intent to injure that went over the top?
I worked with a guy who did time for manslaughter. Punched a guy in a bar and the victim fell and hit his head. No intention of permanent damage but it happened. Probably similar intent with the cabbie.
With my co-worker if the victim only got a fat lip the charges, if they even got filed, would have been some minor assault issue and a slap on the wrist instead of years in Maplehurst.
Agreed it's pretty hard to compare a hit from a fist with one from a ton or two of steel.

Murder is the correct charge.

Death is foreseeable from hit with a car, not so much from a punch in the face.
