Switching mobile phone service carriers?

Current research on the telcos...my phone is dying a quick death (iPhone X) so we're considering going up to a 13 as I don't feel the need for a 14.

Waiting on Koodo to call me, and I'll be calling Public Mobile today also as per @nhoj 's recommendation.

EDIT: Updated following call with Koodo.

Instead of just looking at monthly, I would add rows for TCO over two, three, four and five years. Depending on mishaps, most phones last in the ballpark of that timeframe. That analysis picks up monthly phone/hardware fees that drop out after two years and balloon payments.

Shocking how much competition we have.

In one day:
- BB got rid of their $300/line gift card
- all telecoms changed their iPhone 13 pricing from $20/month to $42/month

Ended up just upgrading my plan from 10GB/month to 50GB/month for less money at Rogers instead of Koodo.

Left Koodo to go to Rogers.

Originally paying $70 for 10GB with Koodo ($60 for my wife).

Went to Rogers for 50GB at $60 for line 1, and $45 for line 2.

Koodo offered me $35/50GB/line 2 days ago and while I waffled on it, the promotion ended.

Koodo called today and it's $38/50GB for me, $35/15GB for my wife, and $30 for 10GB for the MIL.

Looks like I'm going back to Koodo.

No contracts? you can just switch every few days to chase the rate?

No contract, and apparently there's a 15 day cooling off period.

Would've been nice to have the 50GB plan, but it's fine. We don't really need it.

What's the go to for used cellphones nowadays? It's 9:20am, and my phone is at 45% already with battery life. This is getting annoying.

Used to get/buy from my sis and her husband, but now that their kids are cell phone age that route has ended.

Don't want to drop $1000+ on a new phone, but I'm worried about buying used on Kijiji nowadays simply due to fakes and psychos.

EDIT: I have a sweet cell phone plan right now so not looking into buying on contract.

Costco has new motoG's for something near $300 IIRC.

If you have no complaints about the phone why not replace the battery.

Good call haven’t considered that. I’ll look into it.

Think I want to stick with Apple as everything in the house is Apple.

EDIT: well I'll be damned...

Not that hard to replace as well, I’ve done it many times on iPhone X.

Btw, Apple will charge you $119 parts+service and I personally would recommend to go that route, as it’s the only source of original batteries, others can be a hit and miss.

On the iPhone 13 vs 14 decision, keep in mind that the iPhone 14 has the emergency satellite SOS feature.

If you regularly ride/travel in places with weak or no cellphone service, this can literally be a lifesaver.

I'm looking at satellite communication options for our James Bay trip this summer (hopefully) and I do wish I had an iPhone 14....but I'm still using a 12 and didn't want to upgrade this year as I'm waiting for USB-C to make it to the iPhone this year on the 15.

Wow! Didn’t even know that feature existed.

In all honesty I could just buy the damn 14 and pay it down in 4-6 months and be done with looking for a phone considering it’s available with 0% interest for 24 months.

And you'll have a phone that will still receive 100% support for a solid 6-7 years., and for critical security updates, probably well into the 2030's.

And if you end up in a ditch somewhere in the middle of nowhere with no cell service after a wreck, it could save your life.

Win win to me.
