Switching mobile phone service carriers?

Spoke to a Rogers salesperson and the scoop was, shop for plans during Black Friday and shop for devices during Boxing week.

Fido had $30 for 20GB on a 15 month plan during the Black Friday week and their sales (and back-end support) were overwhelmed with the response.
I wonder if ppl read the fine-print that stated a cap on download speeds. Great having the 20GB bandwidth, but not so great having a slower network speed.

I've been with Public Mobile for a while now. They have a $45/20GB package going on right now for a Boxing Day sale.

Bring Your Own Phone.

They're the no-frills, discount carrier owned by Telus, and uses their towers.
So they don’t have roaming outside of the GTA?

I know some of these no frills providers make you roam soon as you pass highway 7 or whatever other arbitrary line.

Not sure what you mean?

Public Mobile is a Canada-wide carrier. The only time you're forced to roam is when you are out of the range of the Telus towers, like when you leave the country.

This is the coverage map:

The no-frills means they don't have a support line. Everything is done over the web.

Keep in mind that they give you the loyalty and preauthorized payments discounts, my son has $5 off on his $15 plan. Theoretically you can go down all the way to $0 per month.

Yeah, they give you reward points for answering questions on the community website (tech support) and referring friends to Public Mobile.

But you're basically working for Public Mobile at that point though - it's free tech support and sales for them, so they don't have to have staff of their own on their payroll.

Rogers called last night....$55/15GB/line. Not bad.

I'll call Koodo / Telus today to see what's available as I'd like to upgrade my iPhone X and my wife's iPhone SE.

What do you guys do with old phones? I've got a stack of them in a drawer just killing time.

Want to use my old iPads for something...but not sure what yet. 2 iPad minis just dusting away. Maybe a clock for my son's room. But would need to lock the internet and everything else on there.

Our data needs are minimal. Zoomer Wireless, shared plan, 3GB shared between the 2 of us, both lines for $58 + HST / month. Zoomer is owned by Rogers and uses its network, so good connectivity. The nice thing is that we switched from Rogers, so porting over our cell numbers was done in less than an hour, so no issue.

One downside is that U.S. roaming is no longer supported, which could be a show stopper for some. Our planned solution to this is to buy a U.S. carrier SIM card at Walmart in Buffalo and just swap out the Zoomer one when we're in the U.S. This should be cheaper than paying roaming charges or getting a travel plan.

Unhook or release your old iPhones and iPads from your AppleID account, then reset them, and then sell them on Kijiji or eBay. There is a market for them.

Yep, they do it too - but I never done that. $2 off for the PAP and $1 for each year my son is with them.
Another way is $1off a month for each referral, while referral is still active.

They changed the rewards program not long ago. It's point based not $ based anymore. It's grandfathered for customers but new sign ups don't get the same benefits.

My phones use 4 or 5G depending on nearby towers. I don't notice much difference between them. I am not downloading large files to my phone often. Drop down to 3G and things get painful.

If your really set on new iPhone check Virgin on Boxing day. They had $62 40gb with iPhone 14 on black friday, Maybe something similar will pop back up

Public Mobile is trying to get rid of their 3G plans and they have recently and still are offering 4G plans for upgrade or new users.

I went to $40/15Gb (4G) and with rewards its $34 per month.

As mentioned Public is Telus and works wherever Telus is.
