Support from close circle/ friends?

I live at Yonge and Finch. Rent is approximately $1,600 for a single. Everything is accessible by the subway. Moving further nets around $1300 for a single (not along the subway line). A $1,000-$5,000 car would cost around $100 a month for insurance. But when you add in fuel and parking the amount will be closer to $400. If your employer gives you free parking (which many places in DT and midtown don't) then have fun. I intentionally chose to move on the subway line because:

  1. No need for car
  2. Parking costs far too much money
  3. You have to sit through 30 minutes to 60 minutes of idiots who can't drive; I'd rather play my 3DS. Look at porn on my phone. Or anything else but drive.

I can walk and carry groceries from the Food Basics next door because I'm a man and not a little ***** that's afraid to carry groceries.

Oh, and the kicker is that my girl friend has a car and is fully supportive that the only vehicle I have isn't even street legal. She's never once hounded on me for the amount of I've dumped into the bike. She's also fully aware that BMW, Audi, VW, etc. etc. are all moronic status symbols.

Statistics, btw, show that the average person with a net worth of $10,000,000 owns a car worth less than $40,000 so a large portion of the "status symbol" cars are living way out of their comfort zone.

As someone who works almost exclusively on luxury cars, I second this.... lots of 10 cent millionaires in those Bimmers and Mercs who struggle to make payments, let alone pay for repairs

Yeah one of their employees drives a Versa company car. He drives Pagani. You get that quote off of Facebook? Sounds like ********.

Noway your gf is Chinese. Every Chinese girl i've met come from a family that treats them like princess. No bimmer no dates.

Btw, i used to live right there too until my bike got stolen. Gotta love the Korean food.

If someone needs a material item e.g. car to define who they are to strangers then that person has some issues and if a guy...small guy syndrome

Cars are plastic and rusting metal working their way down to $0 (99% of cars, not talking collectibles).

Besides most luxury cars in the gta I would say are leased...cheapest way for them to get one.

I guess they like the charm of saying my car is in the shop again this month and the other person responding with omg! mine too but oh well, what can we do.

She's probably Chinese. I'm Taiwanese (technically Chinese) and know Chinese girls who want to marry rich and drive a BMW. Absolutely love wrecking their ego when I show them how slow their $60,000 status symbol is.

Thumbs up for saying Taiwanese. I'm sick of ppl who group Taiwanese and Chinese. Especially mainlanders think they're all the same.

Youre kidding right? Average cost of owning even a small car after all expenses is 9k/year. Fuel, insurence, repair, oil changes, tires, parking cost plus plus plus.. Hardly cheap

This. I spend 4-5k a year on various forms of car rentals (gas + insurance included), and I do get the occasional urge to get my own wheels. But every time I do the math I just end up shaking my head.

Being car poor is what's pathetic IMO.

This thread gave me a bike thought.

Bikes and Relationships

You pick a bike that looks good and you do some basic research first.
You get to know the downsides of the bike and you adjust and accept those.
You also make some minor mods to make the bike run better, look better, be a bit more comfortable so you can the bike can have a good time/adventures.

Now the stupid biker would keep hanging on to dilapidated bike, leaving them stranded and frustrated.
Don't get mad at the bike, it's being itself and doing bike.
As in riding, learn from experience through others or your own. Pick a bike that makes you happy but recognize that no bike is perfect and flat tires do happen.
Just make sure you do your part to maintain the bike and to wash/wax it, keep it looking nice.
As long as the bike is not costing you more than the joy it provides then all if good, ride on.

Thanks for blowing my mind using irony. I'm technically Canadian.

Read any investment book that is sourced. I'm too lazy to do work to get a source for you. Not to mention I have two friends that work on exotic cars (one drives them for a living, other does work) and their stories match up with the professional sources. If I offended you because you have one, good.

My bike is stored my Markham at my folk's place where I have a garage to work on things. I can't imagine anyone owning a track bike in a condo lol pieces everywhere. But yeah, my gf isn't any Asian variant, she's Bangali (east of India).

Hey, I never said I don't have an ego ;)

Lets see how good I am at darts. One is a valet and the other is a tool b*tch at Mercedes?

Pics of hot Asian girls or all this chatter is irrelevant.

I haven't owned a car in 10 years and live in the suburbs. Have only owned a bike for thw last 3 though.

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if any of you goes through similar experience as I do which I call not much support from close circle and friends.

Biking is a passion for me and when I talk about it to some people in my circle they don't seem to happy or would say things like:"why not go for a car instead" or say things like "your life just got shorter"(that's the first thing I generally hear).

Even talking to my gf who supported me doing the class in the past seems like she's talking more and more on how I should buy a car (which I really don't need) specially after renting the last one when I went on a rd trip to see my folks. When ask her about my passion she supported me 2 yrs ago, she said:"Car is good, it's usefull, gives you a status; bike is just for fun, not the samething". Not the first time I'm hearing that, heard it in the past too ... wondering with all those remarks if it's a way to discourage me. (Of course based on my gf's reaction, I decided to keep this little new project of mine a little secret cause I wouldn't want to be suggested to buy a car instead just because I have the funds available ...)

Did/ does any of you guys/gals experienced similar situations? And if so how do you deal/ dealt with it?

Thanks!

OP, You will always get chatter about the dangers of riding. Especially from loved ones. From some of the posts, it seems you are just entering the scene. Follow you passion. Understand the risk, improve your skills, arrive alive. Eventually the chatter mellows. If it continues, your circle of friends will adjust accordingly. Or you can leave the scene. It's your choice. Some rode and don't anymore. Nothing wrong with that either.

Minor irritant compared to circle of friends discussing politics or hockey. That can get down right ugly.

Have you ever had much support for anything you do from close circle and friends where they don't benefit from your undertaking? Think about that. What support do you give friends who are passionate about something that you couldn't care less about and is of no benefit to you? I hate to use the phrase "man up" but that applies. You have to stand for yourself, do what you gotta do. Ultimately you are alone in this world anyway. You won't get any respect by caving in. Compromise is a dish best served cold.

There's an exception to every rule. My gf is Chinese & I only drive a Hyundai .

One time I asked her do you ever wished I drive an expensive car like all the Asian dudes? She replied... I don't want you spending more time on your car than me .

hahaha, been doing this all my life and had no idea that this was such a defining MAN thing to do.

Honestly, i knew id get some unwanted attention if i posted on social media, so what did i do? Didnt post it on facebook.

I've got a bit of bike stuff on IG, but nobody cares there.

And it's not that i would change my mind if someone told me not to ride, it's just that it's my choice and don't feel like dealing with the bickering associated to it. Maybe 3-4 years down the line i might start putting posts about it, but it's not like i have this itch to share. The people that matter know about it and respect my choices, it's all that count

Just like people are trying to convince me that the only option if you have 2 kids (eventually) and dog is an SUV or a minivan... then how do people in other markets survive?
I want a wagon, but it's gonna be difficult to find a decent one in the price range i'm looking at!

i do not recall needing support from anyone to do any activity. Seriously, stay in your parents basement, it's a scary world out there.

Its Asian thing.

In Chinese culture, if you have to hand carry groceries home, you will be looked down on. Forget about asking a girl on a date without a nice car.
