Bolt cutter. Nobody's stupid enough to sit there grinding with a grinder and make all that noise (and yes, I can see how my chain was sheared, so I know it wasn't a grinder in this case, even if people ARE stupid enough to use one)

Lol, I dunno, combine stupid people with oblivious people and I can see thieves getting away with it. I was only asking because I was wondering (for myself) if supposedly bolt-cutter resistant chains are any use. Thanks for the answer, sorry for the hassle you're going through.

I thought on a total theft there was no deductible? When I had my 88 Iroc stolen there was no deductible.

It depends on what insurance you have.

I was thinking the same thing. I've had two bikes stolen from my garage, but neither was chained to something, so that was my mistake (which i paid for in sorrow and deductibles). However, after seeing the Almax videos, I have some hope (http://www.almax-security-chains.co.uk/)...

and on that note:

I was reading this thread and completely forgot my bike was out sitting in my driveway. I quickly ran out and pushed it in the garage. lol

I'll be putting my bike in my garage, but unfortunately it's somewhat shared because I live in a stacked condo townhouse and my neighbors LOVE to leave their garage doors open. Aside from driving a bolt into the ground and chaining it, what else can I do to prevent my bike from being stolen? Are there actual GPS units you can attach that'll transmit?

Hi Nixel,

a bolt and chain is the way to go - however make sure you have a good bolt and chain. Remember that in an assembly like that, thieves will target the weakest link.

I'd recommend a disc lock alarm or motion alarm as well. Another option is to get a pressure sensitive pad attached to your home's security system (if that's an option).

Unfortunately there is no tracking solution that works for motorcycles. There is not enough body to effectively hide a unit like that, so thieves will easily be able to remove it and leave it behind :(

Hope that "helps".

Definitely helps. Only been able to find spotty info on GPS security. Definitely have to find a good combination.

Suggestions for the trifecta? (chain/lock, wheel lock and alarm/sensor.)

Wheel lock is meaningless. You can snap it by hand. It's just there to discourage 14 year old kids from sitting on your bike and cetera. I'm thinking the ONLY chain that might stand a chance is either a boat chain that's too wide for bolt cutters to access, along with a lock of similar thickness, or maybe this thing: http://www.elitesecuritysupplies.com/locks_and_chains.htm

Alarms might be ok, if people are around to listen to it go off.

GPS units can be blocked by simple cell phone jammers you can get from China for $50

I mean what else can you reasonably do to lock a bike up in a public-access location?

I'd recommend an Almax lock/chain/bolt combo. It's pricy, but it seems like it's pretty indestructible. They've even done test against other "indestructible" chains which seem to be snapped very easily (http://www.almax-security-chains.co.uk/).

I term of a wheel lock, my suggestion is something like a http://www.xenasecurity.com/product/motorbikes/alarm/page1/. It's a dislock with an alarm... if you touch the bike, it goes off. Not foolproof, but definitely helps.

Finally, make the bike difficult to see/access... park it close to a pillar, wall, cars, etc. so that thieves can't get to it, lift it, or attach an 8' long set of bolt cutters to it.

My biggest concern is getting my bike stolen at home. I don't use it a lot for daily transport, and if I do, then I park it somewhere where I can see it (i.e. if I' in a restaurant/patio/etc.). It's the time that it's left at home that's scary. That's where it seems the majority of bikes are stolen from, when thieves can come when no one's around, spend a minute cutting the chain, lifting it into a van, and disappearing.

STOLEN BIKE (April 7th between 9am and 7pm)
Toronto / 231 Fort York Blvd

Black/Titanium Honda CBR954RR 2003
Full Akrapovic exhaust system
Fender eliminator.
Integrated tail light.
Micro front signal lights.
Currently the stock screen is on NOT the black double bubble.

Taken with paddock stands front + back, cover, kryptonite disc lock and kryptonite chain+lock (attached to rear paddock).
Obviously lifted out as NOTHING was left behind not even the bike cover luckily my car was not damaged. Yes it was parked infront of it during the theft. This is from a condo parking spot.

Any info please let me know I can update the police case notes.

I feel your pain, dude.

Probably the same guys who did mine 3 weeks ago. I want these ****ers shot. No, scratch that, I want them tortured slowly and agonizingly until they beg for the release of death, which I would permanently deny them the luxury of.
