Speed limits

My coworker got 10 over ticket on 401 lmao. It wasn't reduced or anything, it was for doing exactly 110km/h. Must have been quote time.

And...I agree, however it appears that there is no incentive. Why make the roads safer, more pleasant and a bit more efficient when those things are hard to quantify. $$$ on the other hand, now that's easy to work for.

And? Speed limit should be 130 km/h but heavily enforced. Like it is in Europe.

The German Autobahn has a speed limit of 130km/h in urban and highly populated areas. In short, around the GTA, should be 130.

GTA drivers can't drive properly at a 100kph limit and you want them to go up to 130?! I guess then we'd have more people off the roads due to accidents...it might just work! Personally I think the limits are low, but considering the average driving skill that is witnessed around the area, I don't think that a higher speed limit is the answer. It's lane discipline and actual SKILL to drive. Any idiot can drive 100/130 in a straight line when he's on his own and has 3 lanes of traffic empty.

They all go 120 anyways.

The fact that there is such a discrepancy in speed limit enforcement is the problem. There are the people who think they have to go 100 because that's the speed limit, then there are the people who go 120 because they think they won't get pulled over for doing 120. All of the differences in people's thinking here is what causes the problem. If there was just a set speed limit that was HEAVILY enforced then all of these people wouldn't be having these preconceived misconceptions as to what speed they should be going.

Who follows exactly what the posted limit says anyways?

Raised speed limits will only lead to faster speeds (over the limit). I find that people define "Only a little bit over" differently.

Most people I've talked to maintain 10 over on sideroads and 20 over on the highway. But then there those who do 15 over on sideroads cause the "cutoff to a bigger fine" is at 16km/h over.

There are also those who do 20 over on sideroads and 30 over on the highways because, once again, its only a bit over 15 or 20km/h over. Then there are people that don't give a F about speed limits, as long as they're passing people.

Oh, and theres the whole "Bringing in money for the city"...

So in conclusion, if the speed limits are raised, people will just go "a bit" faster than the posted limit and complain about getting ticketed for speeding anyways. Calculate risks and ride accordingly if you're going to speed.

In my perfect ontario, speed limits would be raised to reasonable levels and then enforced consistently. With the speed limits as they are, strict is not fair.

True. Many cops do strictly enforce speed limits in school zones (40km/h) which is reasonable cause it is a major safety issue finding kinds at a nearby highschool ripping down school zones going 80km/h running stop signs.

Keep in mind, many drivers in Ontario don't know the rules of the road and drive the way they like.
Many people don't even know the difference between a white, yellow, and orange speed limit signs. Many people blow through the construction zone at 70-80km/h at Highway 7 and Jane (curvy area due to construction) and can't stay in their lanes cause they either don't know where the lines are or can't handle the speed.

The posted construction zone limit is 50 there and there are cars AND large transport trucks that literally go straight through the lanes (obviously no signals) through the curves cause they don't realize the road is curved.

I can't lie, I go through that area at that speed too but at least I know how to stay in my lane. Not to mention, going 50 there with people that can't drive around me going a lot faster than me would be dangerous.

That's the misconception in your thinking. We're all trained to believe that we can go just a bit faster than the posted speed limit. Flawed logic IF we had fair speed limits. In other words, NOT 100 km/h on the highway. If we had 130 km/h on major multi lane highways that were heavily enforced then there would be nothing to complain about. Now we complain because cops treat the law differently and everyone on the road is ticketed differently.

That is a ridiculous ticket. Officer endangered the public pulling someone over at the side of the 401. Trucks are going to try to get into the middle lane to yield to the police car on the side of the road and both the officer and your co-worker are in some needless danger there.

Are you sure your co-worker was not doing something goofy and the officer gave him the 10 over because he could not prove/enforce the other infraction?

Speed limits don't only apply to the highway though. Would you think 40km/h in a school zone is fair due to parked cars, kids running around, multiple blind spots between cars?
Some people fly through school zones cause they feel like its too slow.
It is strictly enforced but people do it anyways. So even if the speed limit on the highway was 130km/h and was strictly enforced, are you saying that people won't go faster than the posted limit?

Write to/call your MPP in a civilized, well-argued matter. Won't do anything but it won't hurt either. If more people created some noise, who knows what would happen?

Also, I disagree that if speed limits were increased that people would speed even more. There's a natural flow of traffic (~120) after which you're going faster than almost anyone. I think people will still stick to that speed except they will no longer be breaking the law until they really do something stupid like driving dangerously or really speeding. THEN you can enforce speeding laws. Simple!

A school zone is different than a highway. 40km/h for a school zone IMO is fair WHEN it is a school day. Otherwise it should be 60.

Governments put speeds lower than they should be so to fine you. Speed doesn’t kill people. Slow drivers and drivers who cannot make up their mind kill.

Weird that everyone on the 407 is doing over 130km/h and cops do jack. I know because a cop was driving behind a group of us (in cars) and did nothing.

Hopefully they never introduce the SPECS system like they did in UK.

It's a fact that the speed limits and speed enforcement are for both revenue generation and for making the police look like they're doing something productive. The speed traps are often (if not always) placed in areas where there is no risk of an accident, and are simply looking for easy tickets. Nobody goes the speed limit on the 401. Going 130+ between Kitchener and Windsor is completely safe, and there is no reason it can't be changed to that. I don't have enough experience in the GTA to speak to the current limits and what it should be set to. If I had my way, I'd set it to Autobahn rules (unlimited most places, 130 in built up areas).

Referring back to my post (as I added a bit to the end). People will always speed here no matter how much it is enforced whether it be a 40 zone or on the highway regardless of the posted speed.

Except around Leamington. Bit of a wind tunnel there and I have seen my fair share of accidents around there.

This is FLAWED logic. It's how we're trained. We grow up from as early as kids thinking you can go just slightly over the speed limit. I think most drivers on the road in Canada would say that the speed limits are too low, especially highway speeds. If you set speed limits to what a wide portion of the population would consider "fair", and they were HEAVILY enforced, you'd have A LOT less people speeding. GUARANTEED.
