Speed limits

You need to visit Woodbridge. Where they regularly drive 100kmh in a 50 zone.
That's not the scary part; they're pretty good at driving fast. It's that they don't stop at red lights or stop signs.

Yup, I can vouch for this. Guy with a BMW commonly wheelies in the school zone for no reason.

Yeah, BMW guys are crazy!

;)

forgot about the speed limit, just pull over people who are going slow in the "passing lane" and install cell signal jammers along the hwy.

the Hwys would be a safer place.

Ontario speed limits just cause people to lose respect for the law. Same with parking enforcement. It is a mistake to think that any policy ever has anything to do with reason or principle. It's about who gets powers in exchange for support and votes. There is no other reason. Of course there are committed idealists who think if they just keep believing, they can make a difference, but the bureaucracy just uses and discards those types like vibrator batteries.

The police association will veto any increase in speed limits because with fewer people breaking the law it will mean they will need a legitimate reason to pull people over. Additionally, speed fines and the taxes and fees on insurance premiums go into provincial "general revenue" and the police can starve the government of these revenues by focusing on different enforcement priorities if they don't get the policies they want. The government runs a deficit and pays much of its income as interest on its huge debts so a change in traffic fine enforcement patterns can affect the provinces ability to meet debt interest payments.

If you want a speed limit increase, you will have to make it politically viable, which means more money for general revenue and throwing the cops a bone for their fiefdom of the roads. It's politics. Logic and principle have nothing to do with it.

Don't like the speed limit here? move to Europe... 120-130kph .. faster if you go to Deutschland! haha

Find where the transport minister lives. Grab your GoPro and pace his speed limit to work making sure that you have a clear and concise reading of your own should it be disputed:

I wouldn't advocate harassing individual ministers. If MPs as public figures all had GPSs in their cars, both personal and chauffeured, we could find out whether they obey speed limits. Or are they outlaws too?

One could technically also do this with home made license plate readers set a few km apart on the 400, 410, 407, 427 and 401, and then just match the plates and calculate the distance/time between pictures. It's in public, can't imagine anyone objecting to being recorded in public. Surely if they have nothing to hide, they have nothing to fear.

The political problem with raising any speed limit is the very first time anybody has a car accident it would be "the speed limits" problem/fault.

So, it ain't gonna happen........

The speed limit has to be all inclusive. That's how successful societies work. A percentage of people will never feel comfortable and safe above 100km/h. Big truck have speed limiters. Other people want to conserve energy. And some just like to chill. Some drivers are ornamental. That all creates a speed differential. There's your problem. Pushy people. If you have to be there right now you're doing it all wrong.

Its the speed limit, not the required speed. If slow driver would stay where they should there wouldn't be speed difference issues.

Every time I'm not paying attention to the speed limit driving at a comfortable speed, and I do compare my speed and the posted limit, I'm about 20kph faster. This is not an "I'm in a hurry" speed or "a spirit moves you" speed, this is a normal/reasonable speed.

Unreasonably slow posted speed limits do lessen my respect for the law.

I'm like that everywhere except the hiway. I don't understand how people can drive so slow. On the hiway I force myself to stick to 105 indicated in the right lane.
On of my bikes has no speedo. I ride at a speed that feels comfortable and engaging. All indications are I'm a speed demon.

Lane discipline and overall driving awareness? Until that's sorted higher speed limits are a bad idea imho.

Shoot then taze stupid drivers. All left lane bandits are a threat.

Order to comply must be given. Then shoot, taze and kick as needed.

I was over in Germany a few times everyone speeds even on small city roads. Organized chaos would be the best way to describe they're streets.

Even though many of our highways are designed for higher speeds they probably won't raise the limits because everyone will still think it's ok to do 20-40 over on the average.

TLDR, but I hope someone made the point that licensing in Ontario is far to simple. When they make licensing harder/challenging I will start to think about
petitioning raising the speed limits, but until then, there are far too many idiots on the road.

I drive in parts of Europe about once every other summer. Traffic in Italy and France runs about the same speed as here. The autostradas have limits of 120, but that means 120.
Ontario 100, actually means 115-120.
In Germany, they like to drive fast, and the myth is that they are superior drivers, but the reality is that there are a lot of tragic crashes on the autobahns and the fatality rate in Germany is highest in the EEU.

The scooters make the biggest difference in Europe. They are everywhere. it is not uncommon to make a left turn with a scooter on both sides of you. Milan loves bikes, but sit in a large cafe any evening and you see a lot of guys wearing casts. Talk to them and you realize that falling off or getting hit happens about once every few months, which is why they all wear full leathers and armor.

My biggest beef in Ontario are the 140+ pickup drivers who crash out every snowfall, and the total d-bag BMW leasers who think they either have superior driving skills, or have special road privileges. One of these guys came up on me at 150 in the left lane in heavy traffic on the 403 near Mississauga yesterday, he flashed his lights, and as I was getting out of the lane, he passed me on the right. The OPP never stop people for doing this.
