Speed Kills Your Pocket Book

Yeah! I agree! We should lower the speed limit to 20km/h so that even if they do collide, minimal damage is done and no one would die.

Good goal, but I am not sure it's plausible right now. We should focus on gradually lowering the speed. Maybe 20km/h at a time.

THis is relevant to this thread.

Those are the people that will cry to raise the limits, eventually there an end to it. The limits here are fine, why is everyone in such a rush, just leave earlier lol

OK - If you have some facts and evidence or some stats or something to back what you are saying then please post, if not then all it is just your opinion, you are welcome to express it but me personally couldn't care less about what your opinion is in this matter or anyone else's, if you have any facts that will contradict that video then less have a conversation about that.

The video cited a peer-reviewed study. The Helen Lovejoys of this world haven't been able to come up with any hard data to counter the conclusions

Let's see what the response is and then remember when you vote

The problem with raising the speed limits is people will just drive 20 kmh faster then that posted limit, eventually it becomes too dangerous.
Really? So by your logic if the limits were set to 200km/h, then the average soccer mom would be doing 220km/h. It's this 'logic' that politicians/cops/insurance companies prey on. Has it not occurred to you that maybe people have some idea of a safe speed that they will drive at without needing a sign telling them what it is? Watch driving habits during a snow storm, do you see everyone doing 120km/h then, or do they slow down because they know it's safer in those conditions? Same principle.

Sidenote: Emailed.

I wonder what many of the accidents that occur during snowstorms and rain are due to then?

People following too closely, bad tires, and just bad drivers.
Not everyone is capable of operating a car.
Ever watch Canada's worst driver?
How dafuq do they keep their license or for that matter even get a license?

Having just come back from North Carolina, I noted that even *gasp* Ohio, another historical bastion of low speed limits with insane levels of enforcement, has raised the speed limit on some parts of I-75 to 70 mph. It is now 70 mph top to bottom except for some parts of Ohio and some urban areas. We cruised at a comfortable and (mostly) legal 70 mph with the trailer in tow the whole way.

Regarding the "people will always drive faster than the speed limit" argument ... Watch the video and do your research. It's not true. I speak from first-hand observation that even in Germany on unrestricted sections of autobahn, only a very small number of vehicles are doing very high speeds and only when there is not much traffic. General traffic flow is 120 - 140 km/h, little different from here ... and that is with NO speed limit. Keep in mind that over there, for every high-end Mercedes or BMW, there are at least 10 each of Opel Corsa 1.2, VW Golf non-turbo diesel, Ford Mondeo towing a trailer longer than the car, Fiat Panda, Renault Clio, white van of every conceivable name and size, etc. All of these regular cars driven by everyman are comfortable to drive at 120 - 140 km/h ... just like here!

Tehe - I drove one in Portugal at 150, you do not want to go any faster in one of those things lol

not in a million years

Alberta. Lived there for 8.5 years. Highways are 110. Everyone generally cruises at 120-125. Same as here but without the congestion issues we have.

Alberta's population is about the same as the GTA (3.6 million vs. 2.8 ) , but covers a far greater area, that's why there's no congestion.

^^ ummm there's over 1.1 million in just Calgary. There's congestion just not 3 million retards that don't know how to drive like on the 401.

Just got my reply too from the Minster of Transportation Correspondence (Web Account):

"Thank you for your e-mail. We have recorded your support for an increased speed limit on 400 series highways and will take it into consideration when speed limits are next reviewed."
