Increase Ontario 400-series Highway Speed Limit

Let this be the end of our ridiculous speed limits! Enough highway robbery once and for all.

Good luck. Youll need it.

The province is killing it with fines under the HTA. On top their response back will be about the fuel savings, the environment and safety.

Seeing as how every municipality in S.Ontario would be bankrupt in 6mos without that healthy injection of revenue generation, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I'd push for cutting police budgets & ending arbitration for settling contract disputes. Then the need to rob motorists at gunpoint by the side of the road would end.
How often has the dramatic rise in the "costs" of policing in the last decade linked to rising traffic citation rates come up on the CBC? Oh right...almost never.

Ontario wide police services budgets in 2001? $2.2Bil
Police services budgets in 2013? $4.1Bill

Hey...anybody else making double what they made twelve years ago for the same job? Your wages rising 3x the rate of inflation? How many retention bonuses did you get for getting a 17 percent; raise over the last three years and not quitting?

Police wages in Ontario are out of control...and to pay for them they need to rob motorists.

All valid points, but click the damn link and send the email, it literally takes 10 seconds and you will be doing more than just bitching in a forum.

I know what you are saying, but we don't need luck, we need people to get off their ***** for 10 seconds and send the email.

My commute which since we are neighbors is the same as yous is getting ridiculous, there is traffic at any time of the day and the week, slow speed limits and lack of enforcement on the right things is killing us. If they increase the limits and the cash grab for the cops is considerably reduced, they will need to find the ticket revenue in other ways, so maybe they will go after people using the fast lane to cruise, then and only then and maybe after many years we will have some progress in our traffic flow, cause the 401 ain't going to get any extra lanes.

I can see why people want to speed limit raised, but with the ability and volume of drivers on the road today I can't support it.

When I see less congestion and better drivers then I would consider it. It's effectively 120 on the 400s anyway, and traffic doesn't handle that well in the best conditions. Accidents and traffic everyday, and almost everywhere.

+1 I'd like to see higher limits on long stretches of highway just so you can cross Canada's massive distances a little easier BUT the short story is there's too many dangerous knobs on the road at present who can barely cope with what we have now.

I can understand your points of view, but I have never seen anyone distracted driving on the 407 (I ride it everyday) miraculously people decide to put their coffees and cell phones and donuts away and concentrate in driving, I have also never seen any accidents and the traffic flow in there is easily 130 to 140 - I know you will say that there is a lot less traffic on the 407, however funny enough is the only time i see any traffic is when someone decides to drive the speed limit on the fast lane or even on the far left middle lane.

I think the video does a good job in explaining all your points but, my post is not to change people's minds, i have learned this is an impossible task on GTAM, my post was to get the people that agree to get off their ***** and send an email.

No, no he did not.

If the "effective" speed limit on the 401 is 120, then the ACTUAL speed limit should be raised to that. I would argue it could go higher in certain areas.

Also two other points about things ITT so far:
1. If the flow of traffic increases, congestion decreases. Fact.
2. Accidents on the 401 are often caused by people driving a reasonable speed (120ish) hitting people that are going nowhere near a reasonable speed (95). Increase the speed limit, reduce this type of idiot crash.

thats correct.. ,most people do that speed, so the people driving under that are usually the problem.

its all about $$$$$$$$$$$ for speeding. thats why the gov't will never change it..

they dont give a **** about your safety. if they did, they'd patrol the roads giving tickets for other things, like brake lights, no signals, swerving...etc..

, instead of sitting hidden in a speed trap.

Everything is backwards in this province. Another fine example of this is when they put on speed limiters on trucks at 105km/h because of a rash of rollovers on ramps :lmao: I couldn't make this **** up if i tried...

Your logic is flawed when it comes to the 407.

I see people driving "distracted" all the time on the ETR. On top of that, it is no different than the 401 when it comes to this.
When it comes to accidents on the 407 they are quite serious or fatal in most cases due to the increased speeds. The reason for less traffic or congestion is because its a "tolled" highway.

Sorry but sending an "email" isnt going to change any speed limits anytime soon.

Ugh...and those two lane stretches of the 401 East of Kingston have been fun ever since.
Not too mention a beautiful source of revenue (last trip out I counted EIGHT speed traps between Oshawa and the Quebec border)

They should have got some drifting lessons from Vin Diesel or something.

I love when they try and pass each other now. It's like watching a terrible race at 1/100th of the normal speed.

Great video, email sent
BUT
I am going to start emailing The Police and Insurance companies along with MP's/MPP's to LOWER the limit.
The 401 should be brought down to 90 km/h and in winter 70 km/h.
My letter will have fear mongering to save the children and stats to show the increased revenue for the Police and tax collectors.
Of course the insurance company will endorse because lower speeds equals lower risk for injury with the added benefits of increasing rates for speeders.

Wish me luck. My campaign will be framed around lowering your car insurance and improving the safety for kids, pets, and seniors.

If your want to make change, start by changing your driving/riding habits. If no one speeds then they will not get that desired money, and the road will be safer. The problem with raising the speed limits is people will just drive 20 kmh faster then that posted limit, eventually it becomes too dangerous.
