Some Service Ontario locations closing

I was desperately trying to finalize the importatation of a Jetski trailer that came with a set of Jetskis I'd bought in the USA. There was paperwork issues

Walk in.

"I built a trailer out of purchased parts from PA and lumber. I need a registration and plates".

Walk out with "home built" under make on the registration and your new plates.

Remove any mfg. plate and/or I.D. plate from trailer when you get home - mount new lic. plate.

Done.

The hard part was he had already started the import process by bringing the trailer across the border. I'm not sure how to interrupt that process. I assume that once it's started, you either need to finish it or export the trailer within a certain time period.

Like GG mentioned, once you have started the registrar of imported vehicles process (which starts at the border when you arrive with the trailer/vehicle) you can't just abandon it, so registering as a home built doesn't work.

Ironically I'm going through a somewhat similar process on our new camper that we purchased in New Jersey last year, turns out there was an error on the Vin number from the manufacturer and that's turning into a whole debacle. Murphys law....

You can work around this issue, I had to do it with my trailers when I moved from the US to Canada.

1) Complete a "Vehicle Imported for Parts Form Form 3" for your trailer and remove the VIN. This will convert the trailer import to a 'parts' importation. You will not be able to use that VIN, but you are free to use the trailer parts to complete your home build.
2) Register your imported trailer as a 'home built' (you do not have to declare the parts source). This is a simple process with a self-declaration.

You have to do this at the beginning of the process at the border, not after you've already arrived at the border, declared your purchase, started an RIV, paid the federal portion of the taxes, and filed all the paperwork and photos of a perfectly functional and intact vehicle/trailer.

You can do it after the fact, I changed mine at the Canada Customs office at the Oshawa Airport 3 weeks later when I completed the inspection and registration of my cars. A boat trailer, and a car hauler.

Well, interesting, I'll explore it as an option then as the RIV isn't happy with me right now since it's been basically 6 months in limbo, but I'm stuck in a catch 22 - they won't let me proceed without a corrected VIN, and I've no way to get a corrected VIN.

I've contacted both the federal ministry of transportation as well as my local MP office in an attempt to find a plan B option and got zero response from either. 🙄

What does "home-built" ownership do to the value of a teardrop trailer and/or insurance?

In the past I have imported "trailer parts" to avoid the hassle but it was a cheap trailer so any potential loss of value was immaterial.

It's an interesting question, but I think any reasonable person wouldn't care as it would ve immediately evident that it is indeed, not a home built trailer. It'll probably be 10-15 years before we ever want to sell it anyways so that can to kick is a long ways down the road.

At this point I just want an Ontario ownership sourced via legitimate means, not quasi-sorta-kinda-shady means. If customs is willing to work with me given the impasse and document the process above board, I'm all for it.

The stink is quickly increasing. Province tells existing SO to pay for everything out of their cashflow. Province pays Staples to retrofit the stores. Oh douggie, how do you eff up everything you touch so badly?

"Necessary store upgrades"?? You mean a desk, computer, filing cabinet and sign? I suspect the bill for this will make our heads spin.

If we ever get to find out what that bill is. They're already freaked out it seems and refusing to comment on anything dollars and cents wise thus far.

Freedom of information request will squeeze it out of them down the road I'm sure, but the deed will be long done already by then. Folks.

And we get to pay for STAPLES to do this!

And Staples is already hiring for the roles...anyone looking for a job?!

Of course it goes down like this, Doug will never ever change.

There may be additional infrastructure costs like new internet service etc.
At least I would hope that they bring in new internet service just for the SO kiosk. They better not be using the existing Staples network as I'm sure all that data makes it down into the US.

This crap stinks really bad and the smell will not be going away for a long time.

Probably not that long honestly. Douggie will be hoping that they survive long enough to get all agency stores moved into staples. That also moves the collapse to after the election.
It is surprising that they are still around given the retail vs online landscape. Especially with the types of products they are selling. There isn't much markup on electronics.

I wonder how much of their sales is the printing business and if that is what is keeping them afloat. Perhaps their office supplies side (business customers) are the biggest chunk.

Having said that, I don't mind Staples and they can have some decent sales on electronics from time to time. But I can survive without them.
Usually all the retailers run the same sales on the same items across the board.

I think Shoppers would have been a better choice to put SO into. Maybe tie it into the Canada Post counters.
There are far more Shoppers then Staples across the province. And if we want to be patriotic, they are Canadian.

A previous employer used to buy office supplies from staples. Convenient but priced very high as expected. I suspect that is a lot of their business (and that doesn't need a huge retail footprint to support).

I think I've been in staples once in the last five years. Printed a handful of 11x17 colour and left. Useful but I could live without them.

One problem with shoppers is the Galen optics. Giving them more power and money looks bad. They also have a viable and profitable model with smaller stores so floor space would be expensive. Unless douggie is a complete moron, rent at staples should be somewhere between zero and the province being paid to have SO there. Douggie has proven many times how wrong his decisions can be so we may be paying a fortune.
