There were 72 kiosks with an annual maintenance budget of 2.2M. Wtf. $30K/yr/device maintenance? Upgrade cost to mostly prevent card skimming was going to be 100K/device? Government stupidity.

Security was not the reason the network was disabled, it was simply part of the Liberal strategy to mask massive manufacturing job losses by expanding the public sector workforce. Minister Takar didn't want to shut down the network and delayed it as long as possible.
In the end, manipulating Ontario's job numbers became a bigger priority than improving services and convenience for Ontarians.
''The Liberals dropped the ball in managing the kiosks. I think first and foremost the issue is that, how could we trust a government to run the province, if they can’t properly run a kiosk?” he said. “That’s a big question.” New Democrat Jagmeet Singh - 2012
Ten years later he has his arm up Skippy's ass helping the puppet blow through the freshly printed money on his own pie in the sky socialist pet projects.
"... The Ford government confirms that the deal was with Staples was sole sources, meaning there was no open bidding process allowing companies to bid"
Sources tell CityNews the following 11 ServiceOntario locations will be closing:
"... The Ford government confirms that the deal was with Staples was sole sources, meaning there was no open bidding process allowing companies to bid"
There appears to be no good reason for sole sourcing this. Maybe the deal is ok but sole-source should automatically trigger both an extensive mandatory release of terms and conditions as well as an Auditor General investigation. Things may be clean but their needs to be a lot of light.

Peculiar that the government is moving towards a self-service kiosk-based solution when many retailers are moving away from self-serve checkouts, primarily because of fraud and theft as well as bad customer experience/feedback. Most self-serve lanes at retail locations have at least one staff on hand to handle problems. Will Staples staff serve this role? Wonder if the new SO kiosks will deliver a better enduser experience.

I'm going to guess this is too far down the rabbit hole already to reverse track on now, but I fully expect that in a year or two it'll be a boondoggle in one way or another.
You guys should head up to the town of Durham and check out their SO. It's set up in the back corner of Saundr's Men's Wear. The area is barely bigger than a phone booth. (if you google and look close you can see the tiny setup in the back of the store)
True but also media fanning a fire that barely exists. Contracts were expiring. Government waited until shortly before to tell them they wouldn't be renewed.

The one in Norwood is about the same. I was there 6-8 years ago when I was desperately trying to finalize the importatation of a Jetski trailer that came with a set of Jetskis I'd bought in the USA. There was paperwork issues and it was finally the lady at the Norwood SO that fixed the issue after 5 other SO's telling me that I didn't know what I was talking about.
There was nobody there & she greeted me like I was the first person she'd seen in days lol.

Vs a desk with people at a Service Ontario.
I'm still not really getting where this benefits anyone, except probably Staples, of course.
There is a possibility that Staples provides the space free (or even pays Ontario) as it brings in customers. Devil is in the details. As with all politicians, I expect douggie to bang the privacy drum and try to keep light away.
