So.... Who's Riding This Week????

Off tomorrow, I need this crap to stop, it was snowing again today. The itch is so bad I am going riding tomorrow no matter what. Looks like 2c....works for me as the adrenalin will keep me warm.

Saturday is looking sunny and 4 c....Cora's sound like a bike ride!!!!

I'm hoping the weather takes a turn for the better, was planning on riding down to Toronto to congratulate a friend on his engagement then head to Guelph for a birthday party

Received my first bike Wednesday. Took it out thurs to start practicing moving in first gear, and then again today practiced a bit of stopping and changing gears. Trying to get by without doing the course, but if I find my self-teaching method too difficult in the end, I may just register for the course.
Was planning on heading downtown Toronto prior to rush hour this afternoon just so I can arrive to my destination without the added risk of more vehicles, but the soreness in my wrist is making me think otherwise.

What's the bottom line on your decision to avoid a motorcycle learning / safety course?

Dude if you can hold out for a few more days I'll give you some free lessons on a parking lot.

I would rather give up some of my free time, than see you get hurt.

Regardless at your level you should be booking the first available course with a school.

Are you heading to Cora's tomorrow?

Financial reason is the major component. But also a bit of my belief that it really is just a dedicated time an environment to practice with experience instructors, which I can honestly attempt on my own unless I prove myself wrong.

Well theres still 4-6 inches of snow on the ground in my front yard and my road isn't particularly snowless either, so unfortunately not for a couple weeks likely unless I get a good thaw soon. I've been itching for months now

lmao, were you lurking.... :) ya, lots of crap on the road. started at -1 and just came back and its +1...grab a bit to eat and back out for a spin. I need to get the clicks and have this puppy broken in and ready. You around for a ride Caulberg?

Practicing on your own is great but nothing can beat a pair or 3 of experienced eyes watching and instructing you. I'm the kind of person who likes to learn everything on my own as well, and I started out on dirt learning most of the skills there, but the course instructors definitely had a few helpful tips.

Ok...........that's what I thought.
There's several good reasons that your intent is flawed.
1) You'll actually save money. Why? Because your insurance will be multiplied several times over without a motorcycle safety course certificate.
2)You may think you can 'honestly' attempt to learn on your own. Although this may be true, it's highly unlikely. There's things to learn that you don't realize exist, and you will likely find out after it's too late. This may put yourself in danger, or you may walk away from the inevitable incident. Just as important - you're going to lose interest in motorcycles very quickly, if and when 'such incident' occurs.

Bite the bullet. Start working the phone RIGHT NOW, and sign up for the most important weekend of motorcycling you'll ever have.

Enjoy.

+14 on taking a course. Sure lots of people learned on their own. I see some of them come back when it's time to do their M2 exit test and their basic skills are lacking.
The controlled environment is certainly part of it -which you won't likely get outside of a licensed program (an empty parking lot that you may or may not have permission to play in isn't the same type of "controlled" environment). The bigger part of it is the instructors. People talk about cash grabs, or not enough value, etc. In this type of training, the old adage "you get out of it what you put into it" is absolutely true. The instructors aren't there to take your cash. Sure, it's a job - but for most it's a part time job and they do it because they want to pass on what they can and because they believe in both safety AND the fun of riding. They're an enthusiastic bunch that will do their best to make sure the enthusiasm catches on and you learn at the same time. And finally, you get to do it riding someone else's bike - just in case ;)

Which course? I'm always going to say Humber because that's where I teach - but I would rather see our program lose a customer to another program than see the entire community lose a rider because of something that could have been avoided. Take any approved program.

I just picked up my bike from the shop... Was headed back to work when I saw you, impossible to miss those cannons!!
I'm out tonight, tomorrow I'll be at Cora's around 11 on 2 wheels.. The weather is looking ok to go for a rip afterwards.

Good that your getting the beast broken in... If won't be long before you can unleash!

To be honest I didn't even know that was going on, been doing night training here at work so haven't been on the forums much. I'm working till 12 tonight, won't be home till 2, but if I'm up in time to make it I'll be there for sure!

Weird when I shopping around for insurance, almost every company I called asked me if I had taken a Motorcycle Safety Course. An insurance company even asked me to print off a certificate and send it to them so they can verify it.

I can tell you personally that the course isn't required by some. And may not necessarily affect your premium as mine isn't, hence why the course isn't really a necessity for me.
