Smoking pot in a condo

Here's what you do.
-Go find the guy with this "potent" weed you speak of.
-Grab him by the neck and shake him upside down until his bag of weed falls out.
-Send the offensive weed to my place, and i will test it to make sure it isn't dangerous to inhale the smoke.
:D

I will come over and help you dispose of it safely.

Pretty sure he can smoke in his unit. Smoke weed? Not really allowed to do that anywhere..but are you going to go to war with your neighbour over it?

not sure what that has to do with the point that just because its his unit doesn't mean he can do "whatever he wants".

Pot smokers are usually thankful for places to smoke weed. Being able to smoke indoors is a plus, especially while living in a condo. Leave a note on the elevator door asking him/her to please try and control the smell of the weed. Leave tips (sploof, towel under door, febreeze the hallway after smoking, smoke in a window etc). If he gets the msg that people are being annoyed by it, but not to the point of calling the cops (yet), he might ease up on it. Controlling the smell with a few precautions isn't very hard..the dude will probably smarten up once he realises the smell is bugging people.

Remember, he's smoking some pot...pot smokers are usually reasonable :) Just gotta approach them right

i actually agree with you for once. plus its illegal and illegal for no good reason.

Corrected

Best course of action is to leave a sign with a few tips. Most tokers are easy-going and reasonable. This actually seems like he's toking in the elevator, the hallway or some other public area. That's not cool inside a building. The sign will let him know that the smell is bothering people and that he should stick to his condo or else.

I know of property managers who have limited people in what they cook due to hallway smells. If you consider the legal implications of something that might be a nationality issue versus a product that is illegal the PM has the power to do something. An anonymus note (because some PMs are clueless in keeping things private) would be one step.
One reason you pay for a PM is to avoid direct confrontations.
I am totally ignorant of MJ laws but what about medical use?

Kinda find it odd that people can smoke in appartment buildings and condos. Yea, it's your own unit and whatever but isn't everyone sharing the air in there? Everyone should be going out side to smoke whether it's smokes or weed. Common curtisy I think.

Seriously? "it's illegal for a reason" "it's illegal to smoke inside".... in Ontario I know a lot if people who have their license for medical marijuana. Ranging from arthritis to recovering cancer parents and a ton of other reasons in between. If they have their license they can legally smoke and grow weed (growing is harder because of insurance, specially in condos, but can be done inside as well)

+1 firestart - leave a note, pot smoker will read note, then get really paranoid lol. Then it will smell like Lysol in the elevators, or bounce sheets:)

I actually thought about the medical thing too. The absolute last thing that I'd want to do is put up some Dbag note only to get one back that says '**** you, I have cancer'. I think that what I'll do is draft a very non accusatory note and ask them to just consider the other people on the floor. I think that it's 100% reasonable that the person smoking has no idea that it is so noticeable outside of their own unit.

gonna need to have a chat with mr pot smoker if you feel up to it and see if one of the counter measures of smell reduction will work, as posted previously...or the property management office can look into the legalities of it for you...if the guy is not a medical licensed smoker, then the building will have to deal with it...i have a friend in san fran that one of the neighbours near them smoked, but the smoke was coming in through the exterior window, they moved as the dude was licensed, nothing they could do. good luck, and good toke...

Yes, he /she can smoke in their unit. There is the right to enjoyment of the unit. There isn't the right to impact others who are in adjacent units. If the smell is strong out in the hallway they this person's actions are impacting the other's rights. Do the neighbours have the right to travel common areas without the smell of weed - yes. The property manager and condo board would agree.
There's no need to get into a war. Leave a note near the elevators as others have suggested. If that doesn't work then contact the property manager.

No he can't.
1. its a condo
2. if he wants to play loud music from 2am to 5 am every night... its not he can do whatever he wants.

He also can't rape children or play with hand-grenades but you didn't need to point that out, right? Because it's outside the scope of discussion. I live in a detached house and I can't blast my stereo at 3am either, because it disturbs the peace.

Do odours [in a hallway] disturb the peace? Is cooking a chicken curry or stinky fish something one can't do either because he/she lives in a condo? There must be a line somewhere, but it's not very black/white.

the op only smelled it in the elevator, not the hallway, so at least the building ventilation system is working properly...gotta love positive pressure, stops the smell leaking into the hallway...in my building it happens maybe once in a blue moon that the balance is off and the smell from other units gets into the hallway, smoke, food, you name it...the problem with smoke of any sort, is that it gets into your clothes and elevators are notorious for "storing" it for the next traveller...

Hallways are supposed to have a slight positive pressure to keep the air (and smells) from the units in the units. Maybe this is not working correctly or maybe they are actually smoking in the halls... Might be worth a call to the management.

I actually don't smell it in the elevator. It's not until the elevator doors open, then it's a really strong smell lingering in the hallway
