Shopping list for 2013 track season

This has been discussed at length in the past (expensive iPod/phones as lap timers), and it does seem like a rather expensive and inaccurate (5Hz = 0.2 second resolution at best) when compared to dedicated lap times, doesn't it?

Reminds me, my fire extinguisher needs to be checked.

Waiting for pic of fire extinguisher, pic of you using fire extinguisher, fire extinguisher's laptime at calabogie.

Looks nice! Get a 10hz GPS receiver for your phone and I bet it's work sweet!

Is there any pro/against Bluetooth GPS receivers vs wired? I trust you've done the research already :)

EDIT: Nevermind, I was confused with the bluetooth connectivity to the car computer...

Because OHIP doesn't pay to put our gadgets back together!

Major telecommunications companies' product replacement/support plans are hard enough to get a claim from... traveling on a motorcycle in a closed circuit won't help your case either lol

I just ordered this (Qstarz BT-Q818XT), and I'll use it with either my Galaxy Nexus combined with video, or an old Android phone that I have for just data logging. I'm holding high expectations, hope it doesn't disappoint! 10Hz should provide 1/10 sec accuracy, though I'd be happy even with 1/5. Best thing---no cables needed, yeeeah. 89 bucks shipped!

What's the Bluetooth range on that thing? At smaller tracks would you be able to leave your phone in the pits and have it receive from a safe location?

No, reliable Bluetooth range would be about 10 meters, not more.

I was just about to say what a great idea it would be to choose a longer range communication protocol and make one of these devices, but then I realized there are versions of these that can store the data and once you're in the pit, you can offload to a laptop or whatever you're using... This multi-million dollar idea of mine died faster than the GPS position acquisition rate of this thing :|

As for Android, apparently a lower end phones that can be had for pennies (or old unused ones like in my case) would do a decent job. Here are the top 3 apps that I've researched in forums so far, and they are mostly free lol:

aLapRecorder (free version / paid is $6.50)
RaceChrono (free)
TrackMaster ($5.99)
