Seeking someone to look over a first bike for me

I'd keep shopping. Try Dalton Timmins, they looked after my son when he got his M2 at 18 (5 years ago) -- charged him $800/yr on a Ninja 250. I can't imagine it's tripled in 5 years for a smaller bike. Make sure you are quoted on M2 exit rates.
Was he downtown?
 
Not to be an arse, but I am here for your benefit- $1800 is on the high end for a cbr125. Only my opinion only, I would get a cbr250 for a couple hundred more. 250 is a LOT more bike, still newbie friendly, and 400 series hwy legal. Lots of bikes out there.
I think 125 is hwy legal too (IIRC the line is at 50cc). I agree though, 250 can legitimately be a forever bike, a 125 is much less likely to be a forever bike. 250 opens up ABS possibility as well.

I thought 125's were trading just over $1000? Now it is spring and it has low miles, but personally, I would rather have a starter bike that comes rashed up and have $800 in my pocket. The inevitable first tip over instantly destroys that $800 anyway.
I believe the 400 series req/d a minimum 150cc to be legal - it was a long time ago - has this changed?

It's 125 for highway legal. As someone who rides a 125 it's perfectly doable, being comfortable with it is another matter. Going across the city on a relatively empty highway when people fly around at 120+ is not so fun. Lane splitting across the city on the highway during rush hour is excellent.

Is it really common for these things to sell in the $3,000 range?? Found one for $2100 which I will be looking at Sunday, but the others seem way higher. Either the $2100 one is ****** in some way (but it has low miles so I'm doubtful of that?), or the others are over-asking?

You’re going to end up paying a bit of spring-time tax on any bike. It’s a very seasonal sport – fall/winter are the best time to find a deal. Though I’d imagine there is a lot of tire kickers right now, if you are serious and move fast you can probably still get a decent price.

$2500-$3000 sounds about right for a clean CBR250r. Lots of people looking for beginner bikes so don’t expect to find one for $1500 unless its been beat. On the flip side you probably won’t lose too much if/when you decide to move up.

Another thing to note: CBR 125/250r’s call for a valve adjustment at 24,000km (most current bikes have pushed this to 40k). It’s a couple hundred dollar service at a minimum but could be a good bargaining chip. Also be on the lookout for bikes with the stock tires. Little bikes don’t chew through tires and I wouldn’t be surprised to find a set of the originals on a 2012 bike. Would definitely need to be replaced ($300-$400).

Thanks for the bargaining info! How do i tell if they are originals? I guess I can check the "made on" date? I assume after 5 or so years the rubber becomes brittle and that's the reason am I right?

Re valve adjustment: Also extremely good for me to know. I see a lot of these bikes actually have very low miles (many in the 4-8k range). But if I find a good one with high miles I will definitely call that to attention.
 
Pm frekeyguy and see if he can help. He'll want some money but not tons of it and he knows his stuff so it will be a worthwhile investment.

There's lots of good bikes out there in your price range. Don't forget the ninja 250 as well, insurance should be similar.

theres a cbr125 in oshawa 2008, 6000kms, $1500 certified. looks clean just posted on kijiji. Also on kijiji, a 2012 with under 1000kms in oakville area for $2000. Could offer $1500-1600 for it. lots of bikes for sale. best luck.

EDIT as for not bothering with collision, might save a few bucks-but difference in policy cost is small.

if you can afford the insurance difference (no idea what it would be for you) i too would go with a 250 or 300...i had the 125 for 3 months and sold it because anything close to 100 kph, and it felt too unstable (for me)...fortunately, i bought it in winter (overstock so was a screaming deal) and sold in spring for pretty much what i paid for it...good luck in your search and keep the shiny side up once you get out there...

Dalton Timmins quoted about $250/year more for a 250. Might be less with an ABS model. Also if I cut collision as I was helpfully recommended to do so, that would make my yearly around $2100.
 
Im 36 and going for my M2 (perfect driving record), planning to get a new Ninja 400. Been shopping around, my current auto broker got me a quote of $4200 with Intact (MT-07 is only $100 more). Ive only found one insurer (Echelon/Riders plus) that has what I would consider a normal rate, $1200 per year.
From what Ive found so far:
All companies have raised their rates or dont offer moto insurance anymore.
Many have stopped offering insurance unless you have 3 or 6 years of M licensing.

Current broker says give Echelon another year and they will raise all their rates to match the others.
They can all go pound sand if they think Im going to be spending $3000 to $4000 to ride a dinky 3-400 cc bike 7 months of the year.
Its making me question if I should even go ahead with getting my license.

not as bad as all that ...two wheels with motors are still popular but the category has spread to eBikes and scooters. Insurance is a damper for new riders - no question. But the industry is producing some very fine machines at affordable prices where a decade or two ago it seemed every year there was an increase.

While riding in Ontario might have an insurance cost, the graduated system in Australia and other places with Learner programs is pretty stiff and policing for speed tighter. You also have a wonderland south of the border in Pennsylvania and other states with no cross ticketing to Ontario.
Not all that bad and some of us ride more than 7 months.
 
I'd actually love a dual sport. But it seems like 125-250 "sport" bikes are what is most common / easy to resell. I also don't think they are necessarily put in a sport bike category because they are quite underpowered and basically strictly owned by learners.

My other issue is that if I do find a crf or wr, it will most likely be very far from downtown. Even dealing with this Orangeville bike is a little time intensive for me, and those around me (which, while appreciating everyone's help, I also don't want to be a bother). Just found a CBR250 in Scarborough, which is going to be a trek for me, but doable. So hopefully I will go see that bike in person and possibly get it.

I'd feel so at home on a dual sport. Owned a TTR125 as a kid for a year before I had to sell it.

Have you seen this? I know it's in Brampton, but if nobody else nearby can look at it for you, I might be able to go. Sounds like he still has wiggle room, too, so if there's enough insurance savings, you might break even on your first year compared to the CBR:

That wr250x is an excellent city bike. light amd nimble. and sitting up higher than a sport bike, giving you a broader view of traffic ahead.

but I find 4 large for this 11 year old bike over priced a lot. imo.
 
if I was in DT TO or scarb I would give ya lift for a look/see. Would be fun. Do you have a helmet? Maybe a member in your area out for a ride could give you a lift. and if he's mechanically inclined even better. never know.

Yeah, I wouldn't pay 4k for one either, but he is accepting offers. No doubt they hold their value. I remember when used examples were going for $3500 when they were still in production.
