scrapping a car

i'm getting rid of my 98 camry winter beater currently in the markham area. I'm looking to scrap the car and I heard you can get some money back for it. Unfortunately, one of the brake calipers are completely seized so I cannot even back it out of my garage unless I remove the caliper, I may end up towing it with my CAA or something.

How much do you think I can get for it and whom should I go to scrap it?

Call Standard Auto Wreckers. I think they'll only give you money for it if you bring the car to them, but they'll come and get it for free, the $ they'd otherwise pay for the car offsets the tow (or something like that). If you have to tow the car to them, the cost of doing that might not be worthwhile. I don't know if you can legitimately use CAA for that.

I believe some people also come and tow your car & pay you a couple hundreds. Shop around, I'm sure you can do a search on yellow pages

If you really want to maximize your money then it's possible.

Here is what i did for a couple cars I've scrapped.

Posted on kijiji for any parts they might need.
This includes
- hood/trunk lid
- front/rear bumper
- fenders
- doors
- mirrors
- seats (if leather)
- windshield (if OEM not damaged - they usually come and get this themselves)
- RIMS (yes even rims)
- Cat converter (if OEM is instantly $150. google around there's a site that you ship to in the states, they pay shipping, and will pay top dollar)

edit: Remove the steering wheel SRS air bag as well as the passengers. (people who ****ed up their car that wants to keep it will want this)

Once you're done with the car, call a metal scrap guy or pm me. I have a guy who has picked up 2 of my cars for $150. No wheels, no wheel hub, no front or rear knuckle). He pulled it into his flat bed and away he goes.

Some scrap yards only accept conditioned cars but pay more. Condtioned means no fluids battery or tires. They get towed in on two wheels which are pulled off at the yard.

You can contact the training division on some fire departments. They will take it and use it for vehicle extrication training.

Just out of curiosity, Are there any other items that can be donated for training exercises? (Kids car seats, etc)

Dirty scrap metal is worth about 7c a lbs. my buddy and I scrapped a 2000 Jetta. Removed everything from it. It was basically a shell p, threw it on the trailer and scrapped it. Got 100 bucks for the shell.

Dirty alu is 15c lbs. engine, tranny etc.

if you just want them to tow it away with everything on it you only get 100 bucks. Just removing the cats will net more.

A lot of out of country shippers will pay you good money for that car.
Put it on kijiji for 1500 obo, I'll take my comission in the form of a Gatorade if I see you at the track next year.

I scrapped a Chrysler Intrepid last year. I listed it on Kijiji "as is" needs a load of work etc etc for $500. Got offered $300, then $400 and on and on. Ended up selling it for $700 and the guy came and took it away. Whole process took about 3 days.

damn really? One of my calipers are seized and I'm having trouble backing it out of the garage...it can go forward but not backwards, which is how i got it in the garage...other than that there are lots of other things broken with the car but nothing that prevents it from working

JohnnyP, can you share the name of the shipper?

Even if the caliper is seized, they don't care.
Try going back and forth a few times with the car, even if it's stuck, it should release.
Just post it on Kijiji, you won't get $1500 but I'm sure you can get at least 7-800$.

I vote OP does this, i really enjoyed doing some vehicle extrications in training, wouldn't happen without people donating their cars :)
