scrapping a car

as long as there are valid plates on it. Yes.

Tell em it broke down and you wanna tow it to your shop.

A lot of out of country shippers will pay you good money for that car.
Put it on kijiji for 1500 obo, I'll take my comission in the form of a Gatorade if I see you at the track next year.

you weren't kidding...the minute i put it up on kijiji, there were hyenas calling me...at 2 am in the morning. I have to wonder, exactly whom I selling to, whether its people who actually need a vehicle or some dude who is looking to fix it up or for parts.

I listed everything that was wrong with my car too, and that list is not what I consider short...

WEll this obviously states you want that amount. I'd take that out and let the numbers play out

You can seriously get more than $400 trust me. That cat converter is worth $150 alone
$800 OR BEST OFFER. Do not offer anything lower than $400 as I can get that simply by scrapping it at a yard.

Rear seized brake issues sounds like the e-brake is hanging, mostly because it lets you go forward but not backwards. This might be an easy thing to half-***** free up.

If you can drive it into any scrap yard you should get $300 min in weight. Assuming it is licensed and insured, the fine for not being if you are caught driving it will be well north of the 300! If it is towed you will have to take the tow charge off of that. If you cannot drive it (see my first paragraph) there is not much harm other than some possibly wasted time (and maybe your personal safety...) to list it on Kijiji--just don't take a penny under 300. Give it a week or so and if it is not sold then call for the tow.

no i can guarantee that the front left caliper is messed....i replaced pads and rotors not even 3 months ago and the front left rotor and pad is grinded down all the way...it goes forward, but not without any grinding issues. it just has a helluva lot more trouble going backwards.

It doesn't matter what they're doing with the car as long as you get your money.
It will be shipped to Africa, places like Nigeria, Ghana, etc.
I hope you don't settle for the first offer you get, but don't get greedy either.

much appreciated, thanks...ill stock up on gatorade over the winter.

My wife has a 1997 camry and one of the calipers took a dump as well. I think the new caliper was $150 after the core return

CAA won't tow if you're going to scrap it.
They will if you don't tell them you're scrapping it. Just say you can't drive it and need a tow to the "mechanic" that happens to have the same address as the scrap yard.

Some scrap yards only accept conditioned cars but pay more. Condtioned means no fluids battery or tires. They get towed in on two wheels which are pulled off at the yard.
Really? I had a car picked up with no wheels on it and they refused to pay me the promised $100. Said that was "for cars with seats and wheels" not cars "with nothing good left on them" (it still had pretty much all the other parts).
Dirty scrap metal is worth about 7c a lbs. my buddy and I scrapped a 2000 Jetta. Removed everything from it. It was basically a shell p, threw it on the trailer and scrapped it. Got 100 bucks for the shell.

Dirty alu is 15c lbs. engine, tranny etc.

if you just want them to tow it away with everything on it you only get 100 bucks. Just removing the cats will net more.

Damn. Like I said above, they refused to pay me the one time I had one of these services come pick it up.

They must like Toyotas. I put a good condition 1997 Saab 900se Turbo up there for $1500. Just had some kind of ECU issue or something. Ended up selling it for parts for $400 in the end. It had $4000 of work put into it a few months before that.

Well I hope they like VWs because I have a 2002 golf TDi that I need to get rid of soon. I'd like more than $400 tho lol

Go on tdiforums.

if the engine/tranny/wiring harness ecu is good, there are guys on there hunting for the TDi's to do engine swaps into other things.

Thats why i bought the TDI i scrapped. Picked it up for 400 with front end damage, took the engine/wiring harness/ECU out, parted out the rest, and scrapped the shell...ended up making about a grand on the car. word of warning. TDI owners are some of the biggest cheapskates i've met. All they care about is MPG's and $$ saved. So to them its all about low balling. I mean i wasnt asking ridiculous prices...just wanted to stuff gone and STILL it was frustrating.

With that being said, taking the engine out was dead easy...the front of the jetta/golf jut comes off and you slide the engine out the front, dont even need a hoist.

here's what it looked like when we scrapped it.

Wow!
Ya engine and transmission are fine. It's the rest of the car that is had it. I'm not sure that I want to go as far as parting it out tho. I don't think that I have the time to haggle over everything bit by bit lol.

Used TDI engine alone was worth $1500 a couple of years ago when I was looking...

Safetied/e-tested, over 300,000km and no major problems, ~$5000 shoud be expected. With CEL (related to limp mode and overboost), separated DMF, no radio and a few dings and rust spots, I sold mine a few months ago for over $3000. Personally, I wouldn't pay that much for such an old car, but the demand is amazing. You will get a lot of offers for ~1000, but shouldn't have any trouble getting around 3000 if you can afford to wait a few weeks.

2002 2 door gold w/ ~272,000kms. No radio (physically removed). Engine and tranny are top notch, original clutch and turbo (no issues at all). Timing belt ~50,000km ago.

BUT:
E brake does not work
Suspension is going
Exhaust broken just above the cat
Hatch no longer opens
3-4 small rust spots on the front of the hood

Saftey and E test will not be possible. If I put that much into it I'd just keep it lol

All sounds like problems any car over 250000 km will develop. Or at least any car I've had over that mileage. Literally did all those repairs on my 2001 Jetta a couple years after I bought the car. For $12k. Only I also had to replace the steering rack, all AC hoses, and replace the head after the timing belt slipped.

Flex pipe replacement w cat is ~$500
Shocks/struts (ordered from the states) is $250 + labour
Hatch no longer opens is probably just a little lubrication on that poverty mechanism (they corrode quite badly) although getting the lubrication in there without opening the hatch may be impossible.

I think you will get close to $3000 for it.

Parents have a 2000 Chrysler 300M. Its been sitting for a year now. There is a bit rust on the inside door from what I remember, inside trunk possibly. All 4 tires are flat... Engine must have around 200,000km on it... Both engine and tranny worked perfectly. Since its been sitting outside for a year, cannot open doors, only the trunk will budge... Battery is dead however was replaced over a year ago... rotors replaced as well... Few other things I remember... the drivers side window will not open... and there is a problem with the lock on that door... What can they expect for such a vehicle? A pickup would be a must.

Thanks for the help.. good thread.

Forgot to ask.. recommend a good recycler that will offer top cash for it.... thanks

I'd fix it up (sounds like it doesn't need much) and sell it. You'll likely get 10x as much for it in running condition than you will as scrap.
