I feel bad for they Scots , the vote to remain in the UK was probably a partial thought to remain in the EU. Oopps.
Then theres the Irish, the Protestants aren't that scared by the Catholics anymore. Its going to make life difficult on an island thats had a very short history of calm in my opinion.

Norway is not part of the EU but as a result of trade agreements, there is virtually no restriction on commerce or movement of people between Norway and the EU except, apparently, food and beverages, which have tariffs to offset EU subsidies. Norway is part of the Schengen passport-free zone. So it seems that even though they are not "officially" part of the EU, they function as being part of the EU for most practical purposes.
Switzerland likewise is not part of the EU, and trade between the EU and Switzerland is covered by trade agreements that also result in virtually unrestricted trade. It is also part of the Schengen passport-free zone. So, likewise, they are functionally 99% part of the EU even though they are not officially part of the EU.
Switzerland is an exceptionally democratic country, which has its problems; they have had a number of referendums which have threatened their relationship with the EU. The common citizen often doesn't appreciate the knock-on effects of what the outcome of a referendum could be (and you could say the same of Brexit). But, as it stands right now, there is quite free movement of goods and people between Switzerland and the EU.
The UK even as it stands today is not part of the Schengen passport-free area (and neither is Northern Ireland, although there is no passport required to travel between Ireland and Northern Ireland), so it's unclear what seceding from the EU would accomplish in this regard. They have their own currency ... likewise. (So does Norway, so does Switzerland.)
It seems rather likely that the UK would set up free trade agreements with the EU as it would seem suicidal not to, especially with regards to Northern Ireland. Don't need a customs checkpoint if you have true free trade. Don't need passport control if you already have an agreement with the neighboring country to not need one.
Seems to me that the best Brexit is the one that results in no discernible difference to the current situation.
