Sammy Yatim's friend shot and killed by police

I am under the impression that it was a member of the ETF that shot him - a better trained and experienced individual than a bully type like Forcillo?

If this is true (and I have read it elsewhere) it reinforces my suspicion that some incredibly bad training/doctrine is part of curriculum at TPS. At least they're consistent

My common sense puts me in a position of it being highly unlikely there's any chance of having a gun pointed at me by police.

And further to that, my common sense puts me in a position of never pointing something that looks like a weapon towards a police officer in a way that could cause them to do that.

Doesn't even have to look like a weapon. Simply moving your arm in a similar motion could do it. i.e. bringing up your "dark" phone to video them....

Assuming that's what happened.
If you can't distinguish a cell phone from a gun, or don't have the mindset to wait until you know what you're dealing with... May be you should find a new line of work!!!

I recall reading that the area was dark and this was also at night so it could have been difficult to clearly identify what the object was (gun or cell phone). I would guess that their training teaches them to state that the offender should drop whatever they are holding or they will shoot. They probably have to repeat this a few times where possible. Then it seems they will shoot if the offender is not complying and appears that the danger level is increasing (ie dark object being raised or something).

That said, it also seems that the kid was repeatedly yelling he did not have a gun and it was his phone. Without a video like was present with Sammy Yatim, it will be interesting to see how this unfolds. If there was a video there would be no public appetite for it, but without the video (or witnesses who aren't police), there is no real way to know the truth.

Because no one has ever said " I don’t have a gun" when they in fact, did, have a gun.

This has to be too dumbest post on this site ever.

Not dumbest ever, but I would place it top ten.

He seemed a good kid, folks said good kid. How did he end up running from an alleged fight in a transit station and chased into a park by the police. And if told to drop what he was holding, why would he not drop what he was holding. There was something wrong in that kids head at that moment.

Most of us have done stupid things at one time or another. Fortunately, in most cases, there wasn't a cop aiming a gun at us at the time.

Did the kid have a brain fart?

Did he thrust the phone towards the cop in a gesture saying "See. It's a phone.", not realizing the cop couldn't see it all that well.

In this case there is possibly a good reason for the cop's actions but the history of incompetence, BS, cover-ups and lies from cases like the Yatim shooting will taint and haunt the police services for a long time.

+1

Police need body cameras. If there was a record of the incident there would be no issue of police trust which is at an all time low.

Since there is no evidence on this matter. I'm just gonna say, doesn't matter if a thief in the alley or a police is pointing a gun at you. He tells you to drop the phone, you do that. Doesn't matter if you want to punch the alley thief in the face

Probably scared... bunch of guys wearing tactical gear, pointing assault rifles at him... probably giving confusing, contradicting orders (as usual).. most people would be scared out of their wits... and understandable might not react exactly how the police would like.
Especially if they were yelling "drop the gun"... "drop the gun". (or similar).. repeatedly.. and the guy wasn't holding a gun to drop. Was the kid even given the time to react?

As for my post being dumb... Is it dumb to want, and expect, trained professional tactical guys to properly assess a situation before killing people?... IMO... If you can't do that for whatever reason... You shouldn't be in that situation.
It should not be 'shoot first, ask later'
Cell phones are pretty small, smaller than most pistols... and certainly not held in the same manner as a pistol. I guess the kid could have pointed as if it were a pistol... but I doubt that very much. According to his family.. He was on the phone when he was shot.
Of coarse, may be the kid did have a gun!?

When blackberrys first came out... I was 'taken down' in a grocery store when a 83 year old man called and reported I had a gun. It was my berry clipped on my belt, center of my back. Wasn't a big deal but afterwards they told me they get these calls fairly regularly.

Exactly. You're now in a life or death situation and the next move you make may be your last.

I might be inclined to take my chances with the alley thief because he doesn't have the false moral high ground or blue wall to lean on. But your point is taken.
