Road Rage on the 401, May 21, 2014

Hey Bikers,
Off the top, I do not own a bike, but at times think it would be a great way of cruising. Most bikers, as with car drivers, most are law abiding good drivers, but there are those who wreck it for the rest of you.
On May 21, about 8:45 PM, east bound 401 around Whitby, I was passing a truck doing about 120 kmhr. A sport biker comes screaming up behind me and sits about 5 feet off my bumper. I did what I would do to anyone tailgating me, I took the car off cruise (DID NOT touch the brakes) and slowly passed the truck. The biker didn't even give me a chance to pull to the right in front of the truck before he came flying by, reached out and smashed my passenger side mirror. By smashed, I mean hanging by its wires, not useable, not repairable. He, of course was then gone like a shot.
So, the reason for my rant.... to get it off my chest and if any of the people on this forum hear of this biker bragging how he "gave it" to a lame car driver, let him know he will end up in a box much sooner then me with the anger/speed issues he has.

Should have reported his plate. I realize you probably didn't get it but idiots like this deserve it.

Other than being a bit slower you did nothing wrong as I see it, smashing mirrors is a bit excessive for that sin.

Yeah, sorry about that. I was just feeling frustrated.

(joke)

I [...] slowlypassed the truck.

:laughing2::bunny::laughing5:

Princess's Man sorry to hear about your mirror, but you were in the passing lane and SLOWLY passing a truck. Whenever Princess's Man is in the passing lane and sees someone approaching from behind, Princess's Man will SPEED UP and try to pass as quickly as possible.

OP, please do the same.

Oh, and to the biker that smashed OP's mirror: Princess's Man is very aroused by your manly strength! :cat::love4:

There are 2 sides to every story. I won't cast Judgement

Yeah no reason to punch some ones mirror, its not a common practice among most riders! But why did you slow down your current speed? What were you planning on doing, cause frustration to the person behind you. To me it does sound like you caused some frustration and got the over reaction of the person behind you.

Much like if the same person was in a car behind you he may just speed around you after and slam on the brakes trying to cause an accident or something stupid. Aholes on a bike and aholes on a car are the same aholes, just on different machines.

Sorry for your mirror, the cost and trouble you now have to pay to replace that. I know DOMS is fairly cheap if you go in and pick your own mirror off a car. I had a transport truck try and run my car off the road because he didn't want me to pass him because the lane I was in was ending in 200m and I lost my mirror. I know your pain, I called police and they basically said handle it with insurance because there is no proof that I didn't move into him or he move into me. Wasted the truckers time at least for 1h.

How does one smash a mirror off a moving object at highway speeds using a fist without introducing high speed wobbles?

hi there, sorry to hear about this. I'm sure its not going to be cheap to fix that mirror.. $600-800 ? Yes, unfortunately the ****** bags that drive cars, ride bicycles, walk the street also ride motorcycles.. Im sure his plate was hard to reada and you wouldnt have had a chance to see it. Did you report it or call it in to the police? Who knows *maybe* they pulled someone over later that may have fit the description of the bike/rider.
Anyway, like a lot of things, not all of us are like that.

On another note, I'm surprised this guy was able to do that to your mirror an not loose control of the bike?!!! wow.

EDIT: Retracting the above after the OP admits he slowed down and took 1 km to overtake the truck thus encouraging the road rage. Hes just as much the cause of problem as the person he complains about. Typical Ontario Driver *******.

Have you seen some of the animals riding bikes lately? And I'm not talking on those tippy 250's either.

Was wondering the same thing. There is a business that leaves pylons blocking part of the usable lane that I am often tempted to kick out of the way to make a point but I'm always worried I'd just end up wiping out and looking like a moron, lol.

I had a cabbie throw french fries at me 2 days ago. No idea why. I wasn't tailgating him or riding aggressively.

You acted in an agressive way by slowing down without brake lights, and put that rider's life at risk so you could exercise a little "push back" to his tailgating a lane hogger, with lane blocking "power".

"I did what I would do to anyone tailgating me, I took the car off cruise (DID NOT touch the brakes) and slowly passed the truck." Really? Do you think people who do that when they get tailgated are acting accordingly/"normally"...BS that's passive agressive when a car is following you, and just plain aggressive when it's an exposed MC rider.

All I can say is there could have been a price for *you* to pay too had you caused an accident by slowing down purposley, which you did, without brake lights/a warning.

You suck and I hope that mirror costs you a small fortune...*********.

If someone slowing slightly in front of you puts your life at risk you're riding wrong.

I agree that he was passive aggressive but slowing slightly like he mentioned is just annoying. It's not dangerous nor illegal.

It is dangerous to slow down, without flashing a brake light, when you KNOW the person behind you is tailgating you, especially if that tailgater is a MC rider.

Just because that rider was riding "wrong" doesn't make it okay for the driver to *purposely* slow down without brake lights...he knew what he was doing...he acted agressively, and in doing so, he may have been charged for lane blocking/impeding traffic had there been a collison.

Fair enough about impeding traffic. Forgot about that one.

I still don't think gently slowing is dangerous to a rider, though. Brake checking would be entirely different.

Back in driver ed, we were taught that the best way to deal with a tailgater is to slow down to encourage them to pass. In the passing lane, I'll speed up a bit for someone who keeps a reasonable distance. Tailgaters don't get the same courtesy. I may even drop a couple of km/h (carefully). If it was a bike, I'd just keep as steady as possible to avoid doing something they don't expect.

I seem to run into a lot of aggressive drivers lately. I had a white econoline tailgate me and start flashing his lights on the DVP recently. Even though I had a car in front of me. And even though I was in the far right lane. Maybe I'm not understanding enough of a human being? Maybe he is from England and got confused and thought I was blocking the passing lane. In any case I slowed down and he passed.
