Road Biking - Anyone ?

Been riding single speed for 3 or 4 seasons, would like to step up to quality hybrid/cyclocross type bike with 3 speed internal hub. That's a hard combo to find. If anybody knows.......
You had me up until the 3 spd part. I have to ask why? I can't say I've ever seen one. Cross is still decently cheap now with disc breaks and 10 speed.

He should look up Robert Forstemann. He doesn't turn cranks to dust and I'll guarantee he has more power in his legs. A lot of people don't realize cycling at a competitive level is more about technique than it is about mashing the pedals to hell.

Haven't seen many people with quads bigger than Forstemann

I never understood why some people would brag about how they wear out their equipment. Like replacing a BB once a year means they're super badass??

I don't get it either. I like when people ask how long good equipment lasts and I can tell them from experience the answer is a long time. Otherwise high end parts would seem like a waste of money no?

Because part of my exercise/training regiment (such as it is) is a regular 10km slog up and down a rail trail. Going up I could use a slightly lower gear in some sections and coming down I definetly need taller gearing. But mostly because I get a kick out of keeping stuff simple. It's almost like a religion to me. I do have(did have) 2 high end mtb from mid '90's. One I completely wore out, hence turned to single speed. The other hanging in the rafters with frozen Girvin Vector fork. I'd ride it more but purchased it with too small frame. Bah.

So FIT is the most important thing then? get it from a store and try it out and make sure it fits perfect.

Ergonomics are very important. Poorly fitted, you could hurt yourself when going for the gusto.

You could cause damage even during normal riding. Fit is the biggest thing to proper cycling. Add to it you won't find it comfortable if it doesn't fit properly and thus won't want to ride much.

I'm going the used route now. But there some aggressively priced new entry level bikes - they would also find the best fit for you.

Picked up this older Guru from a nice guy off Kijiji, seems true and well kept. Hoping it works well for me come spring. Still have to buy shoes and some shorts

The guy you bought this off bought way too small a frame for him. Look at the huge stack of spacers and giant rise on the stem.

Let us know how you like those handlebars. They have an interesting bend in the drops (which could be quite comfortable as it seems to take some angle out of your wrists).

That was my concern too. Peddling around the house - the seat seems too high for me.

Going to see if my coworker at work can give me a bike fit. If not I'll pop by the local shop in Erin.

You'll find the seat will always feel "too high" when you start out; it's all about where your leg is positioned in the power stroke rather than how high the seat is from the ground. Great thread BTW.

This is a great time to get gear as last year's stock will be discounted. I've been really happy with buying my gear from Left Lane Sports in the US; high end gear at discounted prices. I picked up some Danny Shane tops for 1/3 of the regular price and some bib shorts. For comfort, I highly suggest bib shorts; the extra cost is more than worth it as they provide the support you need once your rides start to exceed 50kms.

Last summer, I started riding to work in Mississauga/Etobicoke from Milton, about 70km round trip, and had no problems with traffic and plan on doing the same this when spring comes.

I'm hoping to ride into work, its 20km each way. A bit scared of the traffic going home...brampton drivers are horrible. Hoping to find a trail for the ride home.

The seat seems much better that Im trying to spend some time on the bike.

Think these are LOOK pedals - should I be asking the shop keeper for a certain type of cleat?

Personally for a commuting bike I prefer spd pedals and shoes (mountain bike style). It is much easier to walk in them. If you plan on doing lots of 100+ km rides, road bike pedals help to save your knees.

Do you have shoes yet? March bike show normally has some great deals on pedals/shoes.

Look cleats for Look pedals. A lot of them don't interchange.

I'm hoping to buy a budget set of shoes and shorts this weekend. Going to go to the shop in Erin & Cycle path for some deals.

$100-$130 budget for shoes. $80 for shorts or a bib

I'm a bit weary of buying it online. I'm hoping to spend a bit of time on the bike, so I'd rather pay a tad more for a better fitting shoe /shorts.

Any shop is a good plan until you're nailed down to exact sizes or know for sure what you like and don't. Even then to be honest rarely would I buy any of the personal items online. If I wear it I'd rather deal with a shop just in case.

Your pedals are popular. You'll need look cleats. I'll add that there's more to it than just bolting a cleat to a shoe. It's all part of the fit

You wouldn't have a trainer you want to get rid of would you ?

Wish I knew about this earlier.

Still have to buy shorts and a helmet, might check it out. Thanks.
I wouldn't get excited. It's the same as our March show for motorcycle gear. I found nothing to be crazy deal last year.

If you want one, I have one you can take. It's an old school mag trainer. (like this but uglier,

If you feel like playing with your welder, I can sell you a brand new head from a cyclops fluid II (it has no frame it just includes the roller, fan and resistance unit

)
