Riding etiquettes: honking at distracted drivers?

First reaction of *most* people is, regardless of *ANY* situation they're in: "I'm not the problem, YOU'RE the problem. I'm entirely incapable of any wrongdoing!"

If the situation's on the other foot and I'm getting honked at I have no qualms about putting the gun finger up to my temple and pulling the trigger to let the other guy know yeah, I F'd up and I know it.

Sadly, the odds are not in your favor. You can have 258,584 good encounters and then one bad one. It only takes one bad encounter to end you. There are a lot of people driving around with serious emotional issues. Pretty much daily in the GTA, there are road rage incidents involving weapons all the way up to firearms. Facts are that you are more likely to trigger one of those people by honking than you are if you blend in with the crowd. A bike gives you very little protection if it escalates.

You know who you sound like right?

This is exactly what the people who say we shouldn't be riding motorcycles say.

I'm going to go against the grain and say I use the horn daily, multiple times a day.

Driving with your head down looking at your phone, horn.
Doing 5 under the limit on a single lane street, horn.
Stopped in a no standing zone, getting in everyone's way, horn.
Driving beside the car in the lane next to you, horn.
Not turning left on a green arrow/flashing green, horn.
Blocking the intersection getting in everyone's way, horn.
Doing anything stupid, horn.

People need to be shammed for their own development and the good of all of us. Don't be shy. Use your horn. Hopefully they will feel stupid and learn to be better.
If somebody is cruising along a quiet 2 lane 5kph below the limit why be a dick? Maybe he's/she is just out for some motion therapy like us when we go for a ride. Other people have crappy days too and don't need our unrequested input or corrective measures as metaphorical condiments on their crap sandwich.

Just pass them safely at the first chance and live and let live.

Yup. It's easy enough to pass someone while on a motorcycle without the need to honk and be a jerk.

... Might want to read that again.

(I didn't say anything about two lane street, I said single lane street)

Honk.

According to some of you guys my honking should have gotten me killed by a road raging cager about 258,584 times already over the last 17 years of year round riding... and yet I've honked about a zillion times and zero incidents. How bizarre... it's almost like people would rather exaggerate the risk of honking a horn than admit their personality type is conflict-avoidant...

Anyway, during my 25 day ride across Italy this summer it was nice to see that honking over there is in fact the norm, although there is much less need for it as the drivers are, on average, much better.
One day you'll honk at the wrong person having a ****** day, too many cuckoo ppl out there, and the #'s are increasing every year.

Remember the old saying, ride like you are invisible :)

I'm already riding like everyone is trying to kill me. Why would someone trying to kill me care if I honked at them or not? Doesn't make any sense.

Honk.
Must be a short, or residential street. All the more reason NOT to be an impatient dick.

"Honk"

We don't put signs on the back of our vehicles to advise others following us of how our day is going.

Maybe the person isn't a local and is looking for an address and there's no place to pull over. To make it worse there's someone riding his bumper and blowing a horn.

If I'm carrying a tray of coffees or a can of paint I drive a bit more cautiously. I see +/- 10% of the posted limit acceptable in the right lane. As gas prices rise along with interest rates more people may take more time to get home but bring more groceries.

I try to come to full stops at stop signs. I'm sure it bothers the people that run them.

While most of the things that annoy us are probably lack of awareness by the offender we don't know for sure what every individual is going through. Maybe the passenger in the car is going for their cancer treatment.

And there are the brainless twits carrying plywood home on the roof of the car, held down by a piece of string. Four ways and 40 KPH in the left lane of the 401. To them it makes sense as there's no one in front of them and they don't have to use their brakes.

The 1st gen Volt had a "hey I'm here even though you can't hear me" horn on the tip of the left stalk. They removed it for the 2nd gen.

A quick double-tap of a car horn has the same effect really without it coming across as "angry" ... I'd hope the Denali Soundbomb has the same capability.
My Hyundai has a two volume setup but not what comes to mind.

The beep from double tapping the lock button on the fob is far quieter that the horn pad on the steering column. I've never tried the key fob beep while the car is running and in drive. I'll try it later and report.

I have an air horn in the garage that I think about putting on the cage but would want a separate button for it for a couple of reasons. That presents a problem because in the event of a lane intrusion I wouldn't want to waste time reaching for the appropriate button.

Another problem with volume is that volume produced isn't the same as volume received. The other party may be deaf, wearing ear buds or head sets or has the radio volume jacked to all bars. Loud pipes drown out warnings.

On my car, the lock beep is quieter than the horn (less voltage sent to horns). Remote buttons normally do not work when car is running. I changed the coding in my car so they do. I haven't tried to double tap lock while driving to see if I get a quiet honk. With vehicles driving around, I suspect it is too quiet to be useful.

Don't look at hardwrkrs garage pics. His garage may get vacuumed more often than my kitchen.
I have to fix my brad nailer and I know I'm going to drop one of the smallest parts. I know it will land on the dirtiest part of the shop floor.

I'm seriously thinking of fixing it while sitting in the bathtub, dry but plug in.

If it works the double tap is a polite "Ahem".

The regular horn is "Hey you!"

The air horn is "Move your F*#%*&% A^$$"

For light-duty repairs, I use the electronics workbench in the basement. It has great light and a vise. Also less chaos than garage so dropped parts can be found.

Also not sure how many Ontarians are using the Monitoring apps that if you drive like an old grandma your insurance rates will/get reduced.

Do you expect that person to speed up when you honk? What do you do if they don't?

Yes, they typically look up from their texting and driving, realize they have a train of cars behind them, and pick up the pace.

Do you guys even live in Toronto? lol

Re: if it doesn't work, you've got three options: do nothing, try something else, or go doctor mode (if the medicine doesn't work, increase the dosage haha)
