Riding during stay at home order.

OR maybe what is being asked of them isn't that much to worry about, and they will just happily do it and do not believe their freedoms have been taken away. ?‍♂️
Your grandparents (great grandparents?) would have called it "doing your bit" and done it gladly thinking of the others it would help. Now it's all about ME and MY RIGHTS.

Didn't think of this aspect.

There was just a fellow who posted on a Facebook group last night that a friend got hit by a cager in Brampton and broke (IIRC) his ankle or something. He was sent to Ottawa for treatment as there was no room in any GTA hospital for him.

This is a very real risk for anyone out doing anything right now that could land them in a hospital.

That's very serious food for thought. If you get schmucked while out riding you might very well not get fast treatment locally...and if they throw you in a helicopter and send you to North Bay or something, well, you've got some logistics to work out after you get patched up.

A lot of police departments are publicly stating they will not be randomly pulling people over to see where they live.

Yes, a lot did come out saying such overnight.

I think when you read between the lines on many of these the intent becomes fairly clear though. Driving to the grocery store at 1 in the afternoon you're probably not going to get hassled. But anytime after 8pm now when all non essential stores are now closed, especially if you were observed parked out front of a house that doesn't belong to you, well, I think you're fair game - it's not exactly "random" in the spirit of the word any longer.

(Copied and pasted from the other thread)

If a cop stops a car because they see five people in it, that wouldn't necessarily be random.
This whole civil rights thing loses sight of the fact that GTA hospitals now have to send ICU patients to Ottawa. At the rate they're shipping them out, I'd expect Ottawa to be full soon too. We are approaching a triage situation where patients won't have access to the same advanced health care they would expect pre-covid.

... thousands of us commute during "off hours".
Not everyone does 9 to 5 ;-)

I'm grateful that I have a job to go to, and I can commute on my bike. I wouldn't be surprised to get stopped riding after business hours after my shift. Not a big deal to me.

You can project your nonsense elsewhere.
Now It’s nonsense to say do whatever works for you? So much for personal choice and freedoms.

I know that, I'm one of them - I pull out of my driveway at 5:10AM every day.

But I'm going to work, not going out into some random subdivision and parking in front of a house that my plate isn't registered to.

In the end I agree that this is likely another mostly toothless thing, although in a few very isolated circumstances (IE, big house parties and such), used as intended.

The masses are not free thinkers , explorers , entrepreneurs or adventurers . They go along to fit in and be accepted . Fear and the desire to be part of something , anything , drives their behaviour
Wow....aren’t you the free spirit?

I mean ya....**** me for trying to do my part. Me me me me me.

I love how everyone is a sheep except you. Selfish is the only word.

Mind you we’ve been going to the cottage. Gas up and shop in our home area, and my only interaction with those in wasaga is my neighbour across the fence.

stay home stay safe except I want to go to my cottage and talk to my neighbor so therefore I’m a good person doing my part . Haha

Thing is... I'm under no obligation to answer any questions.
I dont even need to speak a word.
Stop me on my way to/from work.
Ask me where I'm going...
*silence.

I'm driving a rental this week... lol
It's not registered to anywhere I'll be.

There are so many problems with thus edict... it's hilarious.

I think you've been watching too much US TV. You may want to come up to speed on the new temporary laws, and our laws in general.

You can't just sit silently and refuse to answer any questions until after you've been arrested.

First, here are the basics:
  • Driving is considered a privilege, not a right, meaning police have wide discretion on the roads.
  • While legally police do have to have a reason to pull you over, in reality police can and do pull people over for no reason. "They can stop you and you don't have to have done anything wrong," says Toronto criminal defence lawyer Ryan Handlarski.
  • You must pull over if an officer wants you to.
  • You must show police your licence, registration and insurance information when asked but are not obliged to answer any other questions or provide details that would incriminate you, says Handlarski. This differs slightly from street checks, or "carding," where you do not have to provide any identification.
  • In Canada, passengers do not have to give police their identification. Police can, however, ask passengers questions. In the U.S., police can legally demand information from passengers, too.
  • In most cases, police can't search your car without arresting you first, or without a warrant. This also differs from our southern counterparts. In the U.S., police can search your car if they have reason to believe it contains evidence of a crime. U.S. police can even take your car apart. "When they say search your car, that means everything — including pulling the fenders off, pulling the gas tank out," says Scott Greenfield, a New York-based criminal defence lawyer.
  • You must obey any lawful command a police officer gives you.

I'm not debating the right/wrong aspect of these temporary laws (and again, most forces have said they're not going to use them purely for compoetely and totally random stops), but it's important people have the facts.

You don't have to support it, but if your stopped you'll be going along with it ......

go for a ride on your own and you'll be just fine, take 8 buddies and some Cop that's a tired of this crap as we are could make an example of you.
Agreed, I have no choice (although I have already written my MPP).

I don't do big group rides anyway, part of my personal risk assessment.

I also understand the risk of accident. We already ride knowing the greater risk of injury. Recalculating that risk in the current situation, it is still acceptable to me. I do this consciously based on very personal life circumstances.

...

My work is considered an "essential service" and my job requires me physically be at work. Our company has provided employees that have to go to work with a letter saying we are required to commute.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out when out riding on a non-work day. When riding I have a habit of stopping and saying hello to police (and waving if a stop isn't practical.) Most officers are decent people just doing their jobs and appreciate a kind word. It also seems like half of them ride or want to ride.

..Tom
