Rider Down — short rant

Not surprising. People seem to be losing their ability to show empathy and compassion for their fellow human beings. I was on the subway once when a woman jumped in front. As everyone was being ushered out out of car and the station, she was STILL ALIVE underneath the subway moaning and crying for help and people were complaining about how inconsiderate it was for someone to do that and inconvenience so many other people. It was disgusting to hear.

Thank fully I've only ever seen one bike go down, other than a friend at lowspeed. It was about 15 years ago and I jumped out of my car and went to the guy, called 911 and waited around to give a statement to the cops. The guy was hurt pretty bad. Not sure what happened. If anyone on here was hit by a gold Honda Accord about 15 years ago while riding a sport bike west on Bloor just west of University, hope you recovered quickly!

I see someone alone in trouble, i stop

If someone is already helping, i move on and hope for the best for them :)

people are too much in a rush in the big city life... and we lose touch with humanity. its rush here rush there... the more you travel away from the hustle and bustle if the big city the more humaine things get.

Ever been to PEI? I've seen the same or worse response there.

A lot of people brought the me first attitude with them from their own countrys and before anyone gets all wound up over this I am a immigrant to.

I can't agree. I've seen this same attitude prevail in S. Ontario for 50 years. Nothing new to me. Most people are too self-centred or lacking in compassion to bother.

30 years ago I'd be the first to stop and help someone on the DVP while traffic whistles blithely by.

Is it necessary for people to post pictures of downed bikes and cars in the fallen riders thread? I would think it just adds to the rubbernecking phenomenon that is experienced by Southern Ontario drivers.

Maybe the wrong thread? No pics posted here and I wouldn't take pics out of respect for the rider.

To be fair, sometimes it's good to see a picture and recognize that it is or isn't someone you know.

I have to admit though, I would pull over for a biker a lot faster than I would for a cager.

Exactly how I feel about people moaning about (attempted) suicides in the subway as well. Someone thought their life couldn't get any worse and just tried to kill themselves. You're moaning cause you'll be 15 min late for work/school. Are you kidding me...... Makes me sick to my stomach and want to call them out about it. Already a few in this thread have done this as well.

That sounds like the people that start threads on wanting to know the M2 exit route, rather than knowing how the examiners mark.

Thats what people want though. People want to learn to pass the test. Not to increase their skill. This attutude was ecountered all through college and university. When it wasnt multiple choice people would complain. They had no ability apply a processes they learned to the question

I would be one of the first bunch that complain about it. Life is hard and I'd love to hear his/her story as why he/she has to kill himself/herself. but before getting to that point, i dont mind saying it again: if someone wants to suicide, please do not jump in front of a subway train because it really inconveniences MANY people who are just trying to live their lives. everyone struggles, and we struggle to get to work on time or my boss will kick my *** and i may get suicidal myself. kidding...in case you dont get it.

mind you it wouldn't be a 15 mins delay. from what you said here i'm guessing probably you don't take TTC and haven't been in such a situation. such a major issue would cause hours of delay, partially due to the very poorly designed TTC system. All the trains will be stopped, and some people will be stuck in the middle of the tunnel for half an hour or so, maybe even longer. during the rush hours, the platforms will be crowded like a sardine can and TTC will need shuttle buses to transport people, and you need to really push hard and be aggresive or you wont be able to get on any and there would be another 30 mins wait (or even longer) then. all the shuttle buses would be significantly slowing down the traffic on the road as well. and this is just part of the whole picture. last time i had to call a friend to drive all the way there to pick me up and i still missed a very important appointment. of course i'm just one of the many examples of how people's lives could get affected, and let's also think about a couple examples before you call me disgusting: what if there are kids stuck in the train want to go to washroom badly? what about people who panic and get heartattack/seisure in the crowded train/buses? what if it's on a day which is extremely hot/cold and elderlies have to wait for the shuttle buses outside for long time?

stop calling us disgusting. you have all your right to be sick to your stomach and i have all my right to call those people pussies for not being brave enough to live and once they don't succeed in killing themselves, they moan and cry for help. and yes, again, please try not to inconvenience other people on purpose, no matter if you wanna live or die. there are so many ways to suicide, and why does someone feels that he/she HAS to choose this way that would affect SO MANY people. I just totally don't get it.

on the other hand, OP's case is totally different. it was an accident and the rider needed help. you sympathize those who suicide by jumping off in front of the subway train doesnt mean others don't have sympathy or wouldn't bother helping in other situations.

and then the drive of the train has to go through post traumatic therapy for 'having killed someone' which affects someone elses life and then well we pay for his therapy as a society as well :D

How uncaring can people be for another person? Many years ago I was rear ended going north on the DVP in my car. The driver waved he'd pull over to the side and I pulled ahead of him at the side of the road. As I got out, he raced past me and took off, knocking me down and dragging me for a short distance. It was summer, I had shorts on. My face was bleeding, hands, legs and one foot all covered in lots of blood. I didn't have my cell with me so as drivers crawled by I asked to use their phone. I can't count the number of drivers that ignored me as I stood at the side of the road with blood everywhere and in shock. Finally after what seemed like forever, a woman pulled over and called 911 for me. I was covered in blood and people would turn their head to pretend I wasn't there.

are you serious?? wow... glad that you are fine now and still riding.

speaking of this kind of trauma, it's not even funny. one day my friend was in north york centre station and was about to walk down until she saw many people running towards the exit and heard people screaming. she didn't actually see the scene because she just turned around and ran with them but she told me that she saw girls who had really pale faces and were crying. apparently those ones saw the bloody scene. i dont know how bad the trauma would be for people who have actually seen such things.

I live in Brampton too. ;) Whenever I get on the bike, it's to get the heck out of here. Worst collection of the most irresponsible and disrespectful drivers on the planet are in Brampton.

++++++++

I hope the rider gets his hand looked at. No gloves and the heel of his right hand was gruesome looking.

I know what you mean about Brampton. I get out of here every chance I can on the bike. It is not just the attitude but 3/4 of the people driving here shouldn't (or don't ) even have a license. That is why Brampton has the highest insurance rates in Canada.
