Rider Down — short rant

it's the kitty genovese effect (or bystander apathy). it is as human as breathing, bigotry, selfishness and cowardance.
people need to be made aware of it and try hard to fight it.

people are idiots for the most part. it's a smaller percentage that are or actually try to be better.

i'm reminded of my own incident in which at the age of 12, i broke my leg from a fall down some stairs in a public area. it was evening rush hour and there was a lot of pedestrian traffic. not a single person bothered to help, even though i was clearly hurt, asking for help and unable to get up.

it's because of this incident that i always make it a point to get involved. i wish more people would too

Don't be silly and try to bring science truths into this. It's only because it's Brampton and the only place where people are horrible is Brampton. Lol

Man I'm going to go riding around your area once I get a bike to sharpen my skills and confidence

Not joking your skills will get better, for those of us that live in Brampton this city is seriously in need of a shakeup. I've only been here for two years and believe me when I say that Markham/Richmond Hill are angels compared to Brampton....lived in Markham for near a decade and grew up in Scarborough.

I (and Sircastic — thanks again!) just helped a kid at Bovaird and 410 who went down. It pisses me off to no end that dozens of car drivers roared up to him, blared the horn, and sped around him. No one stopped to help him. NO ONE! The poor kid was in shock, his hand was ripped open, and he couldn't pick his bike up. I went down the road, pulled a u-turn and blocked the road behind him (bike was across two lanes). We got his bike upright and onto the shoulder, surveyed the damage, Sircastic popped over and fixed his throttle and after about 30 minutes he felt well enough to get the bike to a buddy's place close by.

What is wrong with so many people that when they see someone in the road, possibly injured, that they cannot spend a few minutes to make sure the person is ok? I swear, we're seriously lacking human decency in our culture sometimes. :x

Good on you for stopping, someone stopped for me as well when I broke down and that also was amazing and heart warming to see that there are still those around willing to help a stranger.

This reminds me of the "Whats your worst fear riding a bike" ... Brampton, Markham, women in mini-vans LOL

sorry, my bad :P

I live in Brampton too. ;) Whenever I get on the bike, it's to get the heck out of here. Worst collection of the most irresponsible and disrespectful drivers on the planet are in Brampton.

++++++++

I hope the rider gets his hand looked at. No gloves and the heel of his right hand was gruesome looking.

I second that stormcat! Its the most disgusting group of imcompentent fools I've ever seen. I live right near the Peter Roberston and Hickory Bush four way stop (right near Freshco and timmies) I've almost been killed 4 times thanks to people who don't understand what a four way stop means.. either that or they believe that because I'm on a motrocycle I dont get the same road rights.. I've even seen a LOSER and his girlfriend in his beat up acura purposely run the stop sign and laugh at me as I'm riding through.. REALLY COOL..

I was in University and some elderly woman fell down in the subway and hit her head because she couldn't get to her seat in time..as soon as that happened and someone pushed the alert strip, some woman says "Aww for **** sake!!" I think it's just our society..buncha mutton-heads..

speaking of the assistant alarm, I have to admit that I roll my eyes sometimes when i hear it. I have never seen what really happened in any of the incidents but i felt like this happens a bit too often (sometimes 3 out of 5 days with occassional multiple alarms in the same trip). I'm not sure why there are so many people feeling unwell in rush hours (i assume most of these ppl are NOT elderlies or little kids since it's at the typical "going to work" time). people need to take care of themselves properly. if you have low blood sugar, eat something before you come out or always have some chocolates or candies with you. or if you dont feel well, call in sick or something. you need to listen to your body and know your limit. given the way that toronto TTC is designed, you pressing the alarm means that every single train behind you is delayed infinitely until you get the proper care. I know that if i were the one that is delaying everyone else, i would feel extremely bad and embarrassed, and if i weren't feeling well, i would try my best to wait to get off at the very next stop instead of pressing the alarm.

back to the topic, it's sad how ppl just walk/drive away when accidents happen.

a friend low sided yesterday and the car behind him just swerved around him and drove away like nothing happened.

Brampton has become so bad for driving because it has become little India, and i don't mean that in a racist way at all before anyone thinks that, i have many friends from india, but if you watch any youtube vids of how conjested it is in their home country and how they ride/drive over there i think they have a hard time adjusting here to stop signs, road rules etc once they get here.. very bad drivers, they might be good back home driving in those zany streets, but here, trying to stick to the rules of the road.. not so much.. Mississauga in the Hwy10/Dundas area and north of that is much the same way for the same reasons these days.

Hmmm... all of this said, if any of you folks have kids, please teach them the importance of helping strangers in need. You never know when you might assistance, or someone you care for.

I agree with you on this. the same theory applies to why the drivers in Markham are bad. not being racist but just simply stating the fact. some chinese people who just came to Canada had no idea they have to stop before stop signs. These little things about safety were all crammed in to their heads the last minutes before they went to take the G2 or G road tests.

In China the driving school teaches you techniques (e.g. how to parallel park a big truck with one attempt. if you didn't get it right the first time, fail. if it's not very straight, fail.) whereas in Canada, the driving school and the main purpose of the road test is to teach and test your safety awareness (e.g. stop at stop signs, slow down when neccessary. the officers don't care too much about if you could park the car with one attempt and it's ok to make neccessary adjustment during the process). That's why drivers here are more aware of safety and drive relatively defensively comparing with drivers in China where most people drive aggresively. for example, they accelarate instead of slowing down and letting you i when you attempt to merge into their lane.

Jinni, when I was in China earlier this year I learned a valuable lesson very quick. DO NOT PUT YOUR ARM OUT THE CAR WINDOW.

Well, you probably didn't need it anyway ;)

Glad there are riders like you around in Brampton hope to see you around sometime hopefully on top of my bike lol.

people are too much in a rush in the big city life... and we lose touch with humanity. its rush here rush there... the more you travel away from the hustle and bustle if the big city the more humaine things get.

I think in Canada most driving schools teach you to pass the driving test. Some instructors will even take you around the driving test roads numerous times and point out what to expect and do on those roads. It's a bonus if they teach you anything about safe driving. I had to pay extra to take safety driving classes.

Are you Jay, the rider I was talking about? If so, how's your hand doing? And don't forget — the offer still stands to help you fix your bike. We've all been new riders, and we've all done silly things. :)
