Rape Fees

Bought a pair of boots from Europe...nicest boots I've ever seen / worn. I get a text message from FedEx holding them hostage for $121 taxes, duties, brokerage fees, rape fees, lubricant to rape you fees etc. Called them and they knocked it down to $51 on a $308 pair of boots. Be aware of this this Christmas. These carriers are counting on ~ 80% of their customers just paying whatever they tell you to pay. Call them out on it...

I will never again deal with those crooks FedEx and UPS when it comes to cross border stuff. I bought a US$250 receiver and they held it hostage for an outrageous CDN$180 extra bucks, duties and their fee. I didn't know I could negotiate like I'm dealing with hostage takers! Never ever again.

I now get delivery free anywhere in USA sent to a Niagara Falls NY address (Cross Border Pickups) who process the duty and have a flat charge on their delivery for pickup at either their Mr.-and-mrs. Sauga or Markhan locations. A real fair deal and no negotiating to get your hostage victim.

Liar! Lubricant isn't available.

It's been known for years that UPS, Fedex charge huge processing fees on everything they touch.

Aside from having a mailbox in NF or using Shippsy I simply don't order from vendors that refuse to ship to Canada by USPS.

I heard there's a way to clear the items through customs yourself even when shipped via those guys, but I don't recall the process.

I always make sure its being sent via USPS, unless its a small item that the fees wont be crazy on.
But that's the problem, the brokerage fee is usually fixed at something like $35 (well, back in the 90's when I last used them), so a smaller value item is never worth it. The rest is tax and duty , if applicable.

I have an extortion letter from UPS sitting on my table. Just got it yesterday. They want to screw me for over 100 bucks on an order valued at around 200. I intend to phone them Monday. Thieves.
My daughter has had similar issues with DHL.

I did this almost twenty years ago because a package ended up shipped from the US through UPS, wasn't worth it. This was pre gps and cellphones with google days which made things a heck of a lot more fun.

- Tell shipping company you want to clear customs yourself so they hold it at point of entry
- Drive to point of entry into Canada (Windsor in this case)
- Go to shipping company office to get customs paperwork
- Take paperwork to Canada customs office and pay usual duty fees
- Take your now paid paperwork back to shipping company and collect your package

Sometimes the cost is worth it...sometimes its definitely not.

I'll pay extra if can to have the cost "included" right from the purchase that way there's not frakking around when it crosses the border

curious, what did you say when you called them?
I said "I'm not paying the charges ..that they're almost half the cost of the boots (which they were). " Silence on the other end then "let me transfer you to customs."The guy put me on hold and came back with" pay $51."" Ok I said.." End of conversation.

Just tell them you're not paying and that they're price gouging which is against the law. 90% of the time they'll half the charges or even more than half them.

It's this part that may or may not make it worthwhile depending on what the brokerage fee is. Costs a lot more in gas to drive from Toronto to Windsor and back than the $50 FedEx brokerage fee...

Not to mention wasting an entire day in the car.

For $50 I'd agree....but personally for $200 or so...I'd probably do the drive out of spite.

I don't think I've ever been charged more than $50 for brokerage fees. If you're paying $200 or more, chances are most of that is duty/taxes owed to CRA rather than the courier company. Money you'd be paying either way, if you clear customs yourself or not.

Part of the issue sometimes is the goods get wrongly classified. There are HS codes assigned to every product imported and exported that associate with a tariff or duty. It's not uncommon that the assigned code from the exported is wrong and results in duty when none is applicable. Customs also collects HST of course.

I know that's a bit "in the weeds" but it has happened to me at work a few times. It is correctable by the broker, whether it's a stand alone company or shipper like UPS & FedEx.

I think they throw the kitchen sink at everyone...most will pay it as they think it's legitimate...one phone call and you will find out what you actually really owe. They have nothing to lose by these legal crimes until they get caught and then they just say "oops."
